Southern Californians were jolted awake by a pair of earthquakes before dawn, with the largest measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale.

The two main quakes were followed by several smaller ones in the area around Inglewood and Lennox, near Lax and about 10 miles southwest of downtown LA.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Martin Scorsese gave the Marvel Cinematic Universe the cold shoulder, comparing the billion-dollar franchise to theme parks.

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire magazine. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

His comments on superhero movies incited responses from other filmmakers like James Gunn and Joss Whedon, as well as some comic-book personalities. Whedon, a frequent collaborator in the McU, responded to Scorsese’s comments by highlighting the work of “Guardians of the Galaxy” director Gunn.

The broadcaster has given the series, titled “What Just Happened??!,” a nine-episode order. The half-hour series will debut on Fox Sunday, June 30 at 9:30 p.m. Et.

Ellen DeGeneres has responded to a comedian who said that she originally created a “new game” that DeGeneres played on her show Monday.

DeGeneres trotted out a game with guest Sarah Silverman that she dubbed “Tinder Live,” in which DeGeneres played matchmaker with Silverman and did some live swiping of some celebrity hotties.

Comedian Lane Moore, who has hosted her own show called “Tinder Live” for nearly five years, told DeGeneres on Twitter that it has a Wikipedia page and has been featured in The New York Times.

The struggles of MoviePass to stay alive has been crazy to watch, although it would appear the company is just getting started with the crazy. Uproxx is reporting some members have cancelled their accounts, only to receive word from MoviePass that the company decided to resubscribe them in light of recent changes! That's right, people are getting pissed online because MoviePass is re-signing them up for the service and sending the following message:

Please note: if you had previously requested cancellation prior to opting-in, your opt-in to the new plan will take priority and your account will not be canceled.

So basically, MoviePass is telling those that cancelled and then accepted a new opt-in promotion towards the end of their billing cycle that they've been signed up yet again and their cancellation has been cancelled. Truly, this is some shady shit:

MoviePass is introducing its new subscription plan this week (three movies a month for $9.95), and apparently it wants its users to experience the new business model so bad that it isn’t letting them cancel their accounts. MoviePass subscribers have taken to social media to expose the company’s declining of cancellation requests. The company also appears to be automatically opting subscribers who previously deleted their accounts into the new $9.95 plan without their consent.

Numerous subscribers who deleted MoviePass have received an email from the company noting, “If you had previously requested cancellation prior to opting-in, your opt-in to the new plan will take priority and your account will not be cancelled.” The decision has resulted in deleted MoviePass accounts being automatically renewed for the new subscription plan, much to the anger of those who no longer want to use MoviePass.

Scott Baio is speaking out after a backlash sparked from his recent comments about Erin Moran, his Joanie Loves Chachi costar who died Saturday at the age of 56.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.

Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

The Writers Guild of America announced some of its nominees for its 2015 awards on Thursday, including television, new media, and radio, and among the TV nominees are series both new and old, and all beloved.

In the comedy series category, freshman Netflix show "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" scored a nomination for best series, as well as an overall best new series nod. "The Last Man on Earth" also landed in that latter category, and was singled out for its pilot episode writing, too.

On the drama side of the equation, lauded "Breaking Bad" spinoff "Better Call Saul" also got best series and best new series nominations, in addition to a an episode writing nod. Newly-minted Emmy winner "Game of Thrones" also scored a best drama citation, as well as an episodic writing nomination.
