Exclusive: Black Bear’s management arm has signed writer, director, actor, and producer Jordan Firstman, whose credits include Sundance 2023 black comedy Rotting in the Sun.

Firstman first rose to prominence by sharing short skits, impressions, and impersonations on Instagram Live during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He is also known for writing for Alia Shawkat’s Search Party and he was a consulting producer on Netflix’s animated series Big Mouth. As a filmmaker, Firstman directed the narrative short Men Don’t Whisper, which was shortlisted for the Grand Jury Prize at both Sundance and SXSW in 2018. He has also written for Comedy Central’s The Other Two and directed multiple episodes of the Peabody-nominated Sundance TV series This Close.

On the acting side, Firstman joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2022 via Ms. Marvel on Disney+. He also recently appeared in FX’s Dave and the Netflix comedy You People with Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy.

Following her stay at the White Lotus, Meghann Fahy feels bad for kicking Jennifer Coolidge while she was down.

The Emmy Award nominee recently recalled filming the Season 2 finale of Mike White‘s hit HBO series and accidentally kicking her co-star in the scene where Fahy’s Daphne discovered the dead body of Coolidge’s Tanya floating in the ocean.

“She did a lot of actually floating down in water,” she noted on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And when we were shooting it, I did actually kick her in the face at one point. I felt so bad.

“They wanted to get a shot under the water of my foot making contact with her body, but I couldn’t see where her body was,” explained Fahy. “So she was just like, floating, waiting for my foot to like enter her general space. And I hit her in the face by accident.

Aubrey Plaza starred in The White Lotus Season 2, but the star has not seen herself in the series almost two years after it aired on HBO.

Due to technical difficulties, the Parks and Recreation alum says she hasn’t seen the Mike White-created series.

“I still haven’t, but I’m going to,” Plaza said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. “To be honest, I had trouble opening my HBO Max account when I was trying to watch it originally. I couldn’t figure out the password and I usually just give up when I can’t figure out the passwords. I just can’t handle things like that.”

Plaza said that she has requested DVDs of the series to watch it, adding, “I’d love a DVD, but they don’t send DVD sets anymore. I ask them every time.”

Black Bear’s management arm has signed Austrian filmmaking duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing team behind the folk horror film, “The Devil’s Bath.” Their latest production competed at this year’s Berlinale and was nominated for a Golden Bear. The film, which Variety called “beautiful” and “gripping in its austerity,” swept the Austrian Film Awards and was recently selected as Austria’s official entry for Best International Feature Film at next year’s Oscars.

Franz and Fiala first attracted attention by writing and directing the horror hit “Goodnight Mommy,” which was selected as Austria’s official submission to the 2014 Academy Awards, inspiring an English-language remake starring Naomi Watts in 2022. The pair went on to write and direct “The Lodge” starring Riley Keough, which premiered at Sundance and was acquired by Neon in 2019.

Black Bear’s management arm has signed Mikko Mäkelä, the Finnish-British writer and director of “Sebastian.” Mäkelä is a rising force in international queer cinema having made movies that explore sexuality and identity.

Mäkelä’s directorial debut “A Moment in the Reeds” premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and screened at nearly a hundred festivals worldwide, including Göteborg Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival and Frameline in San Francisco. The film was nominated for the “Discovery Award” at the 2018 British Independent Film Awards.

Mäkelä’s sophomore feature, “Sebastian,” premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance 2024 and was embraced by critics. The film will be distributed by Kino Lorber and will be released on Aug. 2, 2024.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.

However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to watch something made in recent years to end up gradually getting frustrated that I can barely see anything on the screen. Usually, it seems intentional, like directors want you to struggle to see the image for some reason. The iconic buddy comedy lands a live stage reading courtesy of nonprofit arts organization Film Independent, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, and Mubi. The new version of “Wayne’s World” will have a cast solely comprised of women, queer, and non-binary actors, with Abbi Jacobson and Zoe Lister-Jones in the two lead roles originally played by Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.

Award-winning film studio Neon announced today that it will release Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, for digital purchase and rental starting April 16th. The film will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD starting June 11.

Neon acquired Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, produced by and starring double Emmy Award-nominee Sydney Sweeney, ahead of its SXSW World Premiere. This marks a reunion between Sweeney and Mohan, who helmed 2021’s The Voyeurs with the actress.
