‘The Scout’ Review: Modest but Accomplished Debut Brings a New York Location Scout’s Routines to Lovely, Low-Key Life
Image
On paper, Sofia (Mimi Davila), the protagonist of Paula Andrea González-Nasser’s mellow debut The Scout, has an enviable job. She spends her days driving through New York, taking photos of building exteriors, cozy apartments and eclectic shops in service of her director’s vision. Sofia is a location scout, an occupation that conjures romantic images of one’s relationship to space.

The truth is that Sofia’s job can be taxing, and in The Scout, which premiered in June at the Tribeca Film Festival, González-Nasser, who was herself a location scout for six years, crafts a modest portrait of its complicated reality. The director reveals how location scouting involves an emotional deftness, a stultifying deference to a director’s vision and lots of patience. Sofia deploys these tools to broker deals between her team and the people from whom they want things. She must act with the urgency demanded...

Tribeca Review: The Scout Finds Comedy in Monotony
Image
For her debut, writer-director Paula Andrea González-Nasser chose to explore an oft-forgotten role in the filmmaking process: the location scout. The Scout follows Sofia (Mimi Davila), a location scout seeking the ideal apartment during a typical day in her life: driving around New York City, walking in and out of apartments, meeting with friends, strangers, and a demanding TV crew. González-Nasser captures something essential about Sofia’s life: the exhaustion. The film, more comedy than drama, breaks both the viewer and Sofia down in equal parts, pushing either to continue this never-ending day, showing the pressure of a job that many others tell her is “so cool.”

Davila shines in the role, making herself small with oddballs and charismatic when needing to convince a fish-store owner to stay open for five more minutes. Each passing location and misstep––her fault, the city’s, or her boss’––exemplifies how much of...

Interview: Producer Ryan Martin Brown – The Scout (Work in Progress)
Image
While countless films have delved into filmmaking, viewing it through the unique lens of a location scout (played by Mimi Davila) we get a completely new twist on what we take away from the experience. In her feature debut, Paula González-Nasser draws from a world she might have witnessed firsthand for a text that goes beyond the search for physical spaces — The Scout appears to delve into the universal quest for belonging and finding one’s place in the world. I had the opportunity to speak with Ryan Martin Brown of 5th Floor Pictures, the producer of the film. Brown, who previously directed his own feature, teamed up with her once again for this day-in-the-life portrait shot in New York City.…...
