Plot: In House on Eden, paranormal investigators Kris, Celina, and their videographer Jay expect the usual scares when they set out on their latest case. But after being mysteriously rerouted to an abandoned house deep in the woods, they find themselves facing a force unlike anything they’ve encountered before. As the night spirals into chaos, missing crew members and eerie phenomena hint at an ancient, malevolent presence watching their every move.

It’s a big weekend for smaller indie distributors – or at least not the biggest – as they spotted a weekend with nothing new from A24 or Neon and just one major studio opening in what has, and will be, been a crowded summer.
MCU’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the 800-pound gorilla – other studio films “cleared out of the weekend,” says one indie distribution executive. So edgier fare has a better shot. Sony Pictures Classics’ Oh, Hi! and Roadside Attractions’ The Home open on 1,000 screens, IFC’s House on Eden on 600. Magnolia doc Folktales, Oscilloscope’s Diciannove and Greenwich Entertainment’s Shoshana are limited releases, which can always be good counter-programming.
“Often in the summer you are constantly just fighting for screens and looking for whatever weekend you can get the most theaters,” said another exec. Not that it’s a breeze to find space, with tentpole fare...

Hollywood is desperately trying to woo Gen Z into theaters, aware that this scrolling-obsessed demographic has massive untapped buying power (see "Five Nights at Freddy's" for the proof) but a deep preference for phones over film projectors. Studios continue to blame the increased popularity of streaming for the decline in younger audiences showing up to the megaplex, but newer research shows Gen Z and Gen Alpha aren't just skipping theaters, but they're also skipping movies altogether in favor of bite-sized content on social media. A TikTok-shaped tectonic shift has shaken the industry, affecting everything from influencer-dominated press junkets to relaxed phone-use rules during screenings.
The idea that influencers can bring in audiences isn't new. In 2014, YouTuber Shane Dawson won the filmmaking competition show "The Chair" by fan vote thanks to his 10 million-strong following, leaving the unquestionably better filmmaker, relative unknown A.M. House of Eden, directed by Kris Collins, is a found footage horror film that centers around two paranormal investigators Kris, and Celina, accompanied by their cameraman, Jay. The trio rented a car and headed out to the outskirts to shoot a documentary film at a cemetery. They looked forward to their spooky adventure, and they were pretty much having the time of their lives on the road shooting themselves with the multiple cameras that they’d brought along. Just when they’d almost reached their location, Kris took a detour. She explained that she’d heard about a haunted house known as the ‘house of Eden,’ and she thought they must check it out. Celina and Jay were a little disappointed by the fact that Kris didn’t even care to ask for their opinion. Celina had done the research and prepared a rough script for the video, and now that the location had changed,...

A generation that grew up watching The Blair Witch Project and the Paranormal Activity series is bound to be obsessed with found footage horror films. Even though you know it’s make-believe, the mockumentary style has an immersive quality. It satisfies the voyeuristic thrill of watching something that is not meant to be seen and noticing things that even the subject(s) seems to be unaware of. The horror genre is pretty much a game of anticipation—something is definitely going to go wrong, but the question is when? Kris Collins’ House of Eden follows a similar route, and you can already guess that the iconic found footage films have influenced her to a great degree. By now it has almost become a rule that the more fun a character has at the beginning of a horror film, the worse the situation they’ll end up in, and the happy...

The film’s architecture is built on a well-trodden foundation, a blueprint whose ghost haunts every frame. We are introduced to three paranormal investigators: Kris, the ambitious leader whose drive for novelty curdles into recklessness; Celina, whose jocular skepticism serves as a fragile ballast; and Jay, the technician dutifully documenting their collective folly.
The project is the directorial debut of its star, Kris Collins, a move that folds a layer of meta-commentary into the proceedings, with the cast portraying heightened, perhaps unflattering, versions of their public selves. This setup provides a tidy diegetic justification for the omnipresent camera, solving the genre’s classic logic problem with cynical ease: of course they keep filming.
Their careers, their very identities, depend on it. Yet, this initial cleverness is fleeting. The narrative friction promised by Kris’s unilateral decision to detour to the uncharted “Eden” house is never explored with genuine rigor. Instead,...

Eager to capture the supernatural on camera to give their followers a viewing experience they'll never forget, paranormal investigators Kris, Celina, and Jay get more than they bargained for when a surprise detour takes them to an isolated house in the woods where something goes more than just bump in the night in House on Eden, the feature film debut from content creators Kris Collins and Celina Myers.
With the frightfully fun found footage film coming to theaters on July 25th from Rlje Films and Shudder, Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with writer/director/producer/star Kris Collins and fellow stars and producers Celina Myers and Jason-Christopher Mayer to discuss the making of their new movie, including their ambitious filming schedule, the unscripted eerie moments that came from filming in a potentially haunted house, as well as what could be the movie's most essential (and practical) prop!

To me, the found footage subgenre of horror often offers the most potential in the genre. Classics like The Blair Witch Project or [Rec] manage to create some of the strongest kills across horror simply through their filming presentation. This makes House on Eden immediately intriguing. Without the stylings of a group of people recording a mundane haunted house, it would be a total misfire. It still mostly doesn’t work, but it’s decent in points and short enough not to be a total buzzkill.

House on Eden follows three YouTubers trying to capture a paranormal investigation at a spooky abandoned house: Kris (Kris Collins), Celina (Celina Myers), and Jay (Jason-Christopher Mayer). They’re a decent bunch, as far as found footage protagonists go, with enough personality to make each one enjoyable but not too much to be overbearing.

Kris Collins’ directorial debut tackles the found footage genre with a tale of paranormal activity that gets lost in predictable scares and an uninspired ensemble.
“I already made one shitty horror film in my lifetime. I don’t need to make another.”
Filmmaking has become increasingly accessible and technology has reached a point where someone can deliver exceptional visuals and tell a complete story with something that was filmed on a phone. Not every story lends itself to a low-budget and small-scale setup. However, these elements are not just accepted, but expected in many found footage horror films. There’s something naturally enticing about a low-stakes, low-budget found footage film that’s presented as a social media personality’s standard content. There can be such powerful payoff when these types of movies work, yet it’s become more common to ride on the subgenre’s coattails than to genuinely innovate...

Octavia Spencer To Return As “Ma”: Blumhouse Developing Sequel: "As part of its first-ever The Business of Fear event examining the growing power of horror subgenres, Blumhouse has announced that Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer will return as Ma in a sequel to the hit Blumhouse revenge horror film. The original 2019 film, directed by Tate Taylor, earned more than $60 million in global box office, but also spawned hundreds of memes, with audiences embracing Ma as an iconic horror character for the ages. The fandom helped make Ma a phenomenon at Blumhouse’s recent Halfway to Halloween festival.

It may have seemed unthinkable a few years ago for top actors to be on social media, sharing the minutiae of their day or interacting with fans in the comments. But today, most major stars have turned to social platforms like Instagram, YouTube and, more recently, TikTok to boost their fan followings and make some — or a lot of — extra cash along the way.
