Indian diaspora's success story has changed how US views India
Image
New Delhi, July 22 (Ians) The rapid rise of Indian-Americans from politics to administration, entrepreneurship to technology, medicine to hospitality, science to academia has put the global spotlight like never before on the high-achieving four million-plus strong diaspora.

The community happens to be the most educated with the highest median income in the US, with an average household earning of $123,700 — making them the top earners in the US among other Asians in the country.

As the profile of the Indian American community — now the second-largest immigrant group in the US — has grown, so too has its economic, political, and social influence, according to a recent Carnegie Endowment study.

In 2010, only 18 per cent of Americans saw India as “very important” to the United States, according to The Chicago Council survey.

Now, India is perceived by Americans as their seventh favourite nation in the world, with 70 per cent of people viewing India favourably in 2023, says a Gallup survey.

Calls to remove video of Canadian Sikh woman's killing gather steam
Image
Davinder Kaur, 43, was stabbed to death by her estranged husband Nav Nishan Singh in Sparrow Park, Brampton, on May 19.

Emergency crews found the mother of four with "obvious signs of trauma", who died on the spot despite attempts by paramedics to save her life.

Singh, who was arrested a short distance from the crime scene, has been charged with first-degree murder.

"Truly disturbing", professor and human rights activist Madhu Purnima Kishwar tweeted after the video went viral. Singh hurled profanities at Kaur and reportedly took video of her dying moments. The video shows her bleeding profusely in a creek after being attacked.

"Her (Kaur’s) final moments of pure suffering have been shared around the world on social media for all to see and cringe in horror to," Ashis Basu, a Twitter user, wrote

"I am outraged that there is a video circulating on Twitter of Davinder Kaur in her dying moments in Brampton Park.

Robot-assisted surgeries will transform healthcare in country: Indian-origin surgeon
Image
Dr Bhandari, a Padma Shri awardee and also director, robotic research and education, Vattikuti Urology Institute, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit (Michigan), told Ians that although the initial investment in robotic surgical equipment can be expensive, robotic surgery may ultimately result in lower overall healthcare costs due to shorter hospital stays, faster recovery times, and potentially fewer complications.

"It is important to note that the cost-effectiveness of robotic surgery depends on several factors, including the type of procedure, the patient’s medical history, and the availability of skilled robotic surgeons," he noted.

Dr Bhandari stressed that while robotic surgery has the potential to improve healthcare in India by increasing access to medical care and potentially reducing costs, it is important to ensure that the technology is used appropriately and that patients receive high-quality care from fully trained surgeons.

"One of the missions of the Vattikuti Foundation is to train high-quality robotic surgeons through its fellowship programmes,...

Apple empowers creators, artists with iPad Pro tools at India Art Fair
Image
Taking mixed media art to a whole new level, Varun Desai, Mira Felicia Malhotra and Gaurav Ogale used the Apple iPad Pro to do things at the sort of speed at which the artist can imagine, well almost!

"Apple has been providing me with the best technology for this whole thing… An artwork like mine has a whole bunch of layers, so I am able to create about 150 layers at a really huge size. You can see that I am actually drawing on a small iPad, but it can be blown up to a bigger size," Mumbai-based visual artist and illustrator Malhotra told Ians.

Malhotra, known for her bold, multicoloured, illustrated portraits of Indian women, feels that her iPad Pro and Apple Pencil help her bring her ideas out into the world quicker than ever.

Aligning with the theme for this year’s showcase, "Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary...

Rolling Stone India, Maajja must answer tough questions over Arivu’s erasure
Image
CasteWere the publications uncomfortable with the caste realities the song speaks of or deliberately ignorant of them?Bharathy SingaravelFacebook“Enna kora, enna kora, yein chella peraandikku enna kora?”— this line supposed to be as sung by Valiammal, Arivu’s grandmother in Enjoy Enjaami, already asks the question that Maajja, Rolling Stone India and everyone involved in the erasure of Arivu from his own songs need to answer: “in what way is my darling grandson any less?” It was Arivu who also sang the parts of Valliammal in the song, as he told her story of forced migration to Sri Lanka, indentured labour on the tea plantations, her return to India to be faced only with landlessness, and their close relationship. This is the record of entire communities robbed off land and rights, of the original inhabitants of a place being removed, their labour exploited, and given little returns. At the...

Recreating scenes from films, very often as lip sync videos, is common on Tamil social media handles. Originally on Tik-Tok and later on Reels, these short videos have a dedicated following. Our timelines are full of Sarpatta memes right now. The shot of Kabilan and Rangan Vaathiyaar riding the cycle has been a particularly popular choice.
