The BBC has confirmed that hit school drama Waterloo Road will return to BBC One and iPlayer from 2nd January 2024.

The BBC has confirmed that school drama Waterloo Road will return for its next series, the third since its relaunch, on Tuesday 2nd January. Eight new episodes will be available as a full boxset on BBC iPlayer from 6am, though it will also air weekly on BBC One from 8pm that night.

Set and filmed in Greater Manchester, Waterloo Road returned to BBC One earlier this year and was hugely successful.

The synopsis for the new series reads as follows:

With a group of long-term school refusers arriving at Waterloo Road, the balance of peace and harmony once again rests on thin ice. Will Headteacher Kim Campbell (Angela Griffin) and her team have what it takes to stop the school from sinking?

“Inside No. 9” Season 7 Review – British Anthology Series Just Keeps Getting Better
Image
Inside No. 9, one of the best anthology series in recent years, returns with a seventh installment. Creators and co-stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are back to make audiences laugh and shiver with these six diverse tales of various genres. And fans of the eerie and unexplained will surely enjoy this new batch of stories.

The season opens with “Merrily, Merrily”, which features one of the show’s most unconventional settings. After having not seen one another for some time, friends reunite at a lake, where they must paddle on a pedalo to reach their destination. As to be expected among friends who’ve lost touch over the years, arguments erupt. However, the worst of their reunion has yet to come — now their paddle boat is stuck in the middle of the lake. From there Inside No. 9 toys with the audience, playing on their expectations in the best way possible.

Inside No. 9 Series 7 Episode 5 Review: A Random Act of Kindness
Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith in Inside No. 9 (2014)
Warning: contains spoilers for Inside No. 9 Series 7 Episode 5

Out in the world of TV and movie production, millions are regularly spent on scripts containing a fraction of the complexity, ambition or potential in ‘A Random Act of Kindness’. Inside No. 9’s first sci-fi story was an imaginative feat frustratingly limited inside a BBC comedy budget.

Given the right backing, this desperately sad tale of a bereaved son’s guilt driving him to invent time travel and sacrifice his life to repair his relationship with his mother would make an excellent feature film. There could be an indie version starring Chloe Sevigny and David Thewlis, or a big Hollywood one perhaps, with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in the Jessica Hynes and Steve Pemberton roles. Triple the runtime, add a couple of zeroes to the budget, forget about the need to contain all the action inside a ‘number nine’ and you’d really have something.
