Peacock’s Satanic Panic Horror-Comedy “Hysteria” Hits Blu-ray This Month
Image
“Hysteria” will be released on Blu-ray on April 22 via Universal. Despite being billed as Season One, Peacock canceled the show back in February.

The two-disc set contains all eight episodes of the satanic panic horror-comedy series, which premiered in October on Peacock. No special features are listed.

When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the Satanic Panic of the late 1980s, a struggling high school rock band of outcasts realizes they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings and reported supernatural activity triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia, Kezii Curtis, Nikki Hahn, Anna Camp, Julie Bowen, and Bruce Campbell star with Jessica Treska, Nolan North, Elijah Richardson, Brandon Butler, Garret Dillahunt, Allison Scagliotti, and Milly Shapiro in recurring roles.

Peacock just canceled Bruce Campbell's latest horror show
Image
It's a sad day for fans of the Peacock series Hysteria!, led by stars like Julie Bowen, Anna Camp, and, of course, Ash himself, Bruce Campbell. Variety exclusively reports that Peacock has canceled the show after its one and (now only) season.

Hysteria! was an exciting thrill ride of a series, perfect for a Halloween binge-watch, but thankfully, the ending is mostly conclusive, though it did leave seeds for a potential follow-up season if it were to get renewed. The odds of the show being picked up or saved by another platform also seem unlikely, as Hysteria! didn't gain much traction at Peacock. Similarly, Peacock also canceled its other new 2024 horror series Teacup, so this latest cancellation news doesn't come as much of a shock.

As noted by Variety, it's hard to indicate what the viewership numbers were for shows like Teacup and Hysteria! because the streamer doesn't release that...

Peacock cancels underrated horror comedy series (and it didn't deserve it)
Image
We feared this day would come, and now it’s finally here. A new horror series that premiered last year has been axed, and it didn't deserve to meet such an untimely end. It had such potential, and it sucks that we won’t get to see where the story could have gone. Sadly, Peacock has pulled the plug on the horror comedy Hysteria! after only one season, and now fans are left to mourn what could have been.

This disappointing news comes only a month after it was revealed that Peacock had canceled another one of its new horror shows from last year. It was the sci-fi horror Teacup. The streaming giant has never come out and shared why it decided to cancel this series, but low viewership is believed to have played a significant role in the decision. While Peacock hasn't given an official reason for Hysteria!'s cancellation either,...

Peacock Cancels Satanic Panic Series 'Hysteria!' After One Season
Image
There were two great horror series that debuted on Peacock last October, and despite one of them getting rave reviews from fans and critics, they've both been canceled. Teacup made its debut on Oct. 10 and was given the ax last month, and now Hysteria!, the Satanic Panic series starring Bruce Campbell, has also been put to rest after one season. The show holds a 91% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with its audience score sitting slightly lower at 87%.

Variety reports that Hysteria! has now been canceled at Peacock, and will not get a second season. No official reason has been given for the cancellation, but one can assume it was due to low viewership. Peacock doesn't release its viewing numbers like Netflix does, but seeing as how Hysteria! never made it into the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts over the course of its eight-episode run, it's pretty obvious as to why...

Bruce Campbell's Newest Horror Series Gets Canceled After 1 Season
Image
Revisiting the Satanic Panic craze is going to be a limited affair for Peacock, news that will surely disappoint many fans of Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell.

Per Variety, Peacock has canceled Hysteria! after just one season. The series premiered on Peacock in October after it was ordered to series in 2022 with production happening in 2023. Notably, Hysteria! has high acclaim with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so the show getting canceled is clearly not due to a lack of quality. While viewership numbers for Hysteria! have not been revealed by the streaming platform, it's likely that the show didn't perform strongly enough on Peacock to warrant a renewal. The series never cracked Nielsen's weekly Top 10 streaming charts.

Anna Camp and Chiara Aurelia in Hysteria! (2024)
‘Hysteria!’ Canceled By Peacock After One Season
Anna Camp and Chiara Aurelia in Hysteria! (2024)
Peacock is not proceeding with a second season of thriller drama Hysteria!, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes 3½ months after the eight-episode first season was released as a binge drop on October 18.

It is not surprising as the series starring Julie Bowen and Anna Camp didn’t manage to make noise like other recent Peacock entries, including The Day Of the Jackal and Apples Never Fall. The decision follows the recent cancellation of another Peacock October release, horror drama Teacup.

Written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, when a beloved varsity quarterback disappears. It follows a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts who realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a satanic metal band. But when a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings and reported “supernatural...

‘Hysteria!’ Canceled After One Season at Peacock (Exclusive)
Image
The Peacock horror thriller series “Hysteria!” has been canceled after just one season, Variety has learned exclusively.

The show aired its one and only season at the streamer in October 2024. It had originally been ordered to series in August 2022 and began production in 2023, but was forced to shut down after filming just a few episodes due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. It eventually resumed production in late 2023.

Peacock does not release viewership data for its shows, so it is difficult to gauge exactly how many people watched “Hysteria!” However, the show did not make an appearance on the weekly Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts upon its release. It was well-received by critics though, holding a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The official series description states:

“When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize...

Bruce Campbell Discusses His “Hysteria!” Character Arc and Reveals What He’d Like to See in Season 2
Image
Peacock’s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” plunged its small Michigan town into full-blown Satanic Panic. Thanks to its teen protagonists and an atypically sympathetic police chief, order is mostly restored in Happy Hollow by season’s end.

Chief Dandridge (Bruce Campbell) had a particularly stressful arc in showrunners Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman’s (The Orville) inaugural season; the observant yet patient small-town lawman nearly succumbed to the hysteria himself and rallied to survive a near-death confrontation with The Reverend (Garret Dillahunt). The finale wraps up the season’s overarching questions, yet leaves lingering signs that The Reverend and Tracy Whitehead’s (Anna Camp) devious machinations still have roots in Happy Hollow.

Considering that Campbell plays his cop character with unconventional kindness and is billed as a guest star, not series regular, where does that leave the actor regarding the future of the series?

“Well, I am under contract,...

Hysteria! Creators Reveal Surprising Reason Major Rock Band Rejected the Show
Image
A series set in the time of the 1980s Satanic Panic, the Peacock series Hysteria! has had some classic 80s-era music in the show thus far, but the shows creator said there was one song they couldnt get. Per Comic Book, show creator Matthew Scott Kane said even with the best music supervisor, they could not get the song Beth by Kiss.

So, we had the worlds greatest music supervisor and a woman named Jen Malone, who you could throw her any track, any obscure or whatever, and she would go find it and slam dunk it for you, Kane said. Im talking about like the Pixies cover two song from Eraserhead that has all kinds of legal red tape all over it. She got that for us.

Kane continued, We have a song from a Swedish band called Father. Bathory, which that was a whole huge rights issue. The...

Image
The specter of loss hangs heavily over the Apple TV+ original psychological horror series Before, created by Sarah Thorp, particularly over its driven protagonist. The show follows grieving child psychiatrist Eli (Billy Crystal), who is still mourning the death of his wife Lynn (Judith Light), though Lynn continues to appear to Eli as an apparition of his repressed feelings surrounding her illness and demise. And as Eli encounters a strange boy tormented by a paranormal mystery, Lynn's haunting presence continues to prominently take hold of Eli's life as he obsessively searches for his own absolution through the supernatural truth.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Before actor Judith Light reveals the complexities of playing a ghost haunting the series' protagonist, explains how she found the emotional foundation of her character and talks about working closely with Billy Crystal to form the visceral core of the Apple TV+ original series.

Who Is Jessica Treska? 4 Things To Know About Hysteria's Judith Actress - Wiki Bio Details
Image
Peacock's supernatural horror series, Hysteria!, introduces viewers to the show and one of its main actors, Jessica Treska, who plays Judith.

Hysteria! (which is unironically the title of Def Leppard's most popular album (and one of its most popular songs)) follows a high school heavy metal band that uses the Satanic Panic movement of the 1980s to build its reputation after the football team's quarterback goes missing.

All eight episodes of the show premiered on Peacock on October 18, and even though the series was just released, Hysteria showrunner and creator Matthew Scott Kane is already hoping that it will last four seasons.

Interviews: Bruce Campbell, Anna Camp and more talk about their satanic panic series Hysteria!
Promo One Sheet
The last few years have probably felt familiar to many, with a constant blame game in the media attributing violence and crime to one thing or another. Those who lived through the 1980s likely remember the Satanic Panic that spread through the United States, where politicians blamed all sorts of things on kids and teenagers becoming obsessed with Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music. This panic was reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials, which in turn were like the Red Scare of the 1950s. Now, we get to look back at this crazy era through a modern lens, thanks to Hysteria!

Created by Matthew Scott Kane, Hysteria! looks at a small Michigan town in the 1980s where the disappearance of a popular high school student leads to theories of devil worship and supernatural influences in the community. While some parents begin to experience strange phenomena, a trio of teens decide...

Hysteria! Show Producers Think 'The Satanic Panic Has Never Really Left'
Image
Peacock's Hysteria! explores real-life fears alongside supernatural terrors, leaving audiences guessing what is and isn't real. But that was the goal of creator and showrunner Matthew Scott Kane and producer David A. Goodman, who melded their talents to develop a TV show which is equal parts nostalgic and modern. What happens in this small town will appeal to horror fans both old and new.

Cbr sat down with Kane and Goodman to explore if they had any personal experiences with the Satanic Panic that helped form the idea for Hysteria! and how they feel it never really left. The producers discuss the many influences that helped make Hysteria! feel familiar, even though the show has a unique idea that hasn't been seen before. How did they break new ground utilizing infamous history?

Cbr: Hysteria! takes place during a very specific time in history, when the unknown ruled the masses and created fear.

‘Hysteria!’ Review: Peacock’s Satanic Panic Mashup Is a Halloween Treat
Image
What marks the devil? Is it a hulking figure with burnt skin and massive horns? Is it a personal enemy or unseen force? What is hell, if not a high school hallway, haunted by inner and outer demons that can only be escaped when you walk out the door?

It might be all of that, as it is in Peacock’s “Hysteria!” created by Matthew Scott Kane. In the 1980s bliss of suburban Michigan, a the high school quarterback has disappeared, a bloody pentagram left in his wake. Dylan Campbell (Emjay Anthony) gets mistaken for a Satanist by the popular Judith (Jessica Treska) because he plays in a heavy metal band with friends, so they pose as Satanists to become popular. But as fear of the occult grips the town of Happy Hollow, the innocent teens become prime suspects, and a powerful force takes root that threatens everyone.

Video Interview: Bruce Campbell Talks 80s Satanic Panic and His New Role in Hysteria!
Image
Just in time for a Halloween binge, Hysteria! is now available on Peacock and, having seen most of the series already, I can definitely say that it's worth your time. An 80s-set horror story that doesn't feel like it's focused on nostalgia, Hysteria! has a great cast with great chemistry, and it really does a great job of building up its characters, including its supporting cast, which features Bruce Campbell as the chief of police in a town where satanic panic takes hold. During a recent press day, I caught up with Bruce Campbell, where we talked about his new role and his experience with satanic panic in the 1980s.

Synopsis: "When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a...

Hysteria! Review: Bruce Campbell leads the rocking ’80s horror TV series
Image
Plot: When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported “supernatural activity” triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.

Review: There have been many 1980s-set retro horror movies in recent years, ranging from My Best Friend’s Exorcism to Totally Killer and more. The 80s were a bastion of paranoia about the impact of Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal, a thread used in Netflix’s Stranger Things. The new series Hysteria! goes back to the heart of the Satanic Panic to see how one small town in Michigan deals with its own devilish challenges. Led by genre legend Bruce Campbell along with Julie Bowen,...

‘Hysteria!’ Review: Bruce Campbell Plays It Straight in Peacock’s Chaotic Satanic Panic Dramedy
Image
If you’re a circumspect first-time TV creator given vaguely free rein, you have two choices (for the purposes of this exercise).

One, you can render your vision in the most easily digestible way possible, to make a series that is clearly promotable and satisfyingly resolved, in the hopes of engineering a hit and getting to make other shows in the future.

Or two, you can throw every idea in your brain in the general vicinity of the screen, aware that success is never guaranteed and you may never have another shot.

Sure, the result of the second course of action might be complete and utter chaos that audiences won’t know how to process and networks won’t know how to sell. Still, at least you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing you left nothing on the table.

Peacock’s Hysteria! is a difficult to explain. It’s a...

Hysteria!'s Kane & Goodman On Balancing Horror With Comedy & Collaborating With High-Profile Producers
Image
Matthew Scott Kane and David A. Goodman are taking audiences back to the Satanic Panic for a hilarious and twisty ride with Hysteria!. The TV show serves as Kane's biggest project to date as a writer, having primarily worked as a production assistant on everything from American Horror Story to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while having also penned one episode of the ABC Family sci-fi crime drama Stitchers. Goodman, on the other hand, has six Emmy nominations under his belt for his work on Futurama and Family Guy, while also having worked on Seth MacFarlane's The Orville.

Created by Kane and showrun by him and Goodman, Hysteria! is set in a fictional small Michigan town in the '80s that is rocked by the disappearance of a local varsity quarterback, which seemingly points to a potential Satanic cult in the area. As the investigation continues, a trio...

“Hysteria!” – Bruce Campbell Explains What Drew Him to Peacock’s New Horror Series [Interview]
Image
Peacock‘s coming-of-age thriller series “Hysteria!” is set to tackle the era of Satanic Panic, with heavy metal and actual Satanism sowing generational division in a small conservative town in Michigan. And what’s Michigan horror without actor Bruce Campbell?

The actor guest stars as Chief Dandridge in the series, set to premiere all episodes on Friday, October 18, 2024.

“Hysteria!” follows a group of 1980s high school misfits as they exploit the growing hysteria around teen occult activity, written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane (Stitchers) and David Goodman (The Orville). Caught in the middle of the mounting tension between adults and teens is Campbell’s police chief.

Unlike his most iconic character, Ash Williams, Chief Dandridge prefers logic and science. Though he isn’t your typical small-town police chief. That’s because he treats the teens with respect and compassion, a far cry from the typical parents in suburban set ’80s horror.

Image
Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis are three friends whose efforts to break free from being outcasts leads to them becoming the targets of their small town in Hysteria!. Though having different starts to their careers, both Anthony and Aurelia had early success in the horror genre, with the former having starred in both the well-received horror-comedy Krampus and Aaron Eckhart-led Incarnate, while the latter starred in both Mike Flanagan's Gerald's Game adaptation and Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Curtis, on the other hand, is better known for his young-demographic-skewing fare, most recently including the Owen Wilson-starring Secret Headquarters.

The trio star in Hysteria! as Dylan, Jordy and Spud, three friends in a small Michigan town in the '80s struggling to get a fanbase for their metal band, Dethkrunch. When the local varsity quarterback goes missing, and the talk of the town becomes about the possibility...

‘Hysteria!’ Trailer Showcases a 1980s Satanic Panic
Image
Peacock’s upcoming series Hysteria! shows a town in the grips of a Satanic Panic — emphasis on the “satanic” part.

The streamer has released a full trailer for the show, which premieres Oct. 18 and centers on three high schoolers (Emjay Anthony, Chiara Aurelia and Kezii Curtis) whose heavy-metal band decides to lean into the fear caused when the high school quarterback goes missing and a pentagram is painted on the teen’s garage. Their makeover as satanists, however, unleashes forces — both among their peers and, possibly, with something otherworldly — that soon spin out of their control.

The trailer — which greatly expands on an earlier teaser — also shows a teenage girl (Nikki Hahn) being abducted by a creepy masked intruder and a woman (Julie Bowen) being stalked by an unseen entity. Watch it below.

The show’s regular cast also includes Anna Camp, horror icon Bruce Campbell, Garret Dillahunt, Nolan North,...

Julie Bowen is back on TV, but she is far from the feel-good nature of “Modern Family.”

The “Happy Gilmore” actress leads upcoming Peacock series “Hysteria!,” which is set during the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s. In the trailer, Bowen is shown as a ’80s housewife who is rocking out with her Walkman…until her microwave seems to become possessed by a “Ghostbusters”-esque demon.

Evil Dead | Bruce Campbell confirms animated series is in development
Sam Raimi at an event for Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise is getting an animated series, it’s been confirmed. Here are a few more details of what’s coming.

The Evil Dead franchise is having a rennaisance thanks to Lee Cronin’s successful 2023 entry Evil Dead Rise. Earlier this year, Sébastien Vaniček was attached to direct and co-write a new spin-off film. Francis Galluppi wil write and direct the next Evil Dead film.

According to Deadline, while promoting his latest Peacock series Hysteria, franchise stalwart Bruce Campbell has confirmed he will reprise the role of Ash in an animated Evil Dead series.

Campbell said that “we are developing an animated version, like a series. I’ll do that. I’ll do Ash’s voice all day long because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have. The trick is to take the elements that people like, which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity,...

‘Evil Dead’ Icon Bruce Campbell Says Animated Version In Development
Image
Bruce Campbell announced his live-action retirement from the Ash Williams role after the cancellation of Ash vs Evil Dead in 2015.

Now, while promoting his latest Peacock series, Hysteria, Campbell revealed news of his next project as Williams.

“We are developing an animated version, like a series,” he said to Entertainment Weekly. “I’ll do that. I’ll do Ash’s voice all day long because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”

The actor said that the series relies on the strength of the premise. “We’re out of the cabin, Sam [Raimi] doesn’t have to direct, I don’t have to star as Ash,” Campbell said. “The trick is to take the elements that people like, which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity, and it’s people who have no skills to stop it.”

Meanwhile, Hysteria — created by Matthew Scott Kane — also stars Julie Bowen,...

Created by Matthew Scott Kane who writes and executive produces and co-showruns alongside David A. Goodman, former WGA President who is a co-chair of the negotiating committee. Hysteria! explores America’s...
