NBC’s La Brea wraps up with season three episode six, an episode that begins with a flashback of Gavin (Eoin Macken) learning Eve was pregnant with their first child. The action then switches to 1965, with Gavin, Izzy, Sam, and Helena hoping that they’re getting closer to finding Eve.

Helena (Emily Wiseman) believes they should head to Reisander’s base in Pasadena. There’s a detention center there and that might be where they’re keeping Eve. Helena thinks they can kill two birds with one stone – rescue Eve and destroy their research on the microchip. She’s going to use an electromagnetic pulse explosive to wipe out their research.

It’s no surprise that La Brea Season 2 ended on many cliffhangers, paving the way for an exciting Season 3.

The problem was that the writers’ strike soon affected the series. While they quickly wrote and filmed a shortened final season, they have many storyline arcs to complete in only six episodes.

Eve’s decision to return to the portal room alone was rash, and viewers panicked as she was sucked away through the portal to an unknown timeline.

With La Brea Season 3 only weeks away, we’ve started compiling theories as we prepare to enter the sinkhole with the Harris family and their friends.

Certain storyline arcs must be adequately addressed, or the devoted fanbase will be upset they didn’t get closure. La Brea has such a massive cast, so it may not be easy to include everyone, and it looks like they’ve added some additional characters, too.

The first trailer for La Brea’s third and final season features a T. Rex, sure, but there’s lot more going on than that.

The teaser trailer above, released on Friday by NBC, gives us a sense of the chaos that has ensued after — concurrent with Eve’s mysterious vanishing — a bazillion auroras appeared in the sky outside, allowing people (and dinosaurs!) from other eras to drop in on 10,000 B.C.

Tuesdays are not the same without La Brea.

Although the series was initially billed as a sci-fi sinkhole drama, the series excelled as a family drama at its core. With so many facets, La Brea appeals to many audiences.

Fortunately, we don’t have to worry about it ending just yet. NBC renewed the series in January 2023, and La Brea Season 3 is coming. However, with the writers’ strike, the series’ future beyond the filmed episodes is uncertain.

Shudder and IFC Midnight are launching microbudget Skinamarink on a not-so-micro 629 screens, giving the viral horror pic a major push after a well-received premiere back at Fantasia-fest that just kept snowballing with strong reviews and social media love.

“I was over the moon. For a horror filmmaker in Canada, [Fantasia] is like getting a Cannes screening,” says first-time filmmaker Kyle Edward Ball about the leadup to this weekend’s buzzy specialty opening. He shot the 15k feature at his parents’ home in Edmonton, Canada.

In it, two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished. “I’d had a nightmare when I was little. I was in my parents’ house, my parents were missing, and there was a monster. And lots of people have shared this exact same dream,” Ball tells Deadline.

This year is already off to an incredible start for the horror genre, with M3GAN scaring up big time profits in theaters and “The Last of Us” getting set to elevate horror television on HBO.

Much like last week, this second week of 2023 is similarly home to several exciting new horror releases, including the return of Kevin Williamson plus the arrival of a viral horror indie.

Not to mention, this Friday is the first Friday the 13th of 2023!

First up, from Ryûhei Kitamura, the director of Midnight Meat Train, comes Lionsgate’s The Price We Pay, which just debuted on VOD this Tuesday and comes to select theaters Friday.

Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Stephen Dorff (Blade) star in The Price We Pay, which looks like a genre fusion of an action-thriller and a slasher movie all in one crazy package.

The Offering

A portrait of a troubled family facing more than one kind of crisis, Oliver Park’s The Offering mixes Jewish mysticism, horror, and the social difficulties which arise when a young Jewish man leaves the Hasidic community to take a gentile wife. He (Nick Blood) longs to reconcile with his father, Saul (Allan Corduner), but the situation is further complicated by his urgent need for money, which has him considering the potential value of the family home and the mortuary business beneath it. It’s his pregnant wife Claire (Emily Wiseman) who actually gets close to his father, as each of them strives to adapt to make room for the other – but when the body of a man with a dark secret is brought in to the mortuary, a threat emerges which changes everything.

The Offering is released this week and to mark the occasion we spoke to its leading duo of Emily Wiseman and Nick Blood. The pair, both somewhat new to the horror genre, discuss adapting to this style of filmmaking, and what audiences can hope to take away from their experience watching the finished product.

Of course it’s not just this project we discuss, as Blood has featured in the MCU series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as in the Star Wars franchise spin-off Andor, though the British actor admits he’s never actually it. Naturally we ask why.

Despite 2019’s “The Vigil” making a modest splash amongst genre fans, the annals of Jewish horror movies remain pretty thin. Adding a page to those ranks is The Offering,” which actually has considerable overlap with that recent predecessor — it, too, is about a shape-shifting demon who preys on the living after the death of its latest host, whose corpse is on the premises awaiting burial.

English helmer Oliver Park’s debut feature is the slicker, somewhat showier affair of the two. But while diverting enough, it lacks that predecessor’s atmospheric dread and psychological plausibility, resulting in a jump-scare-riddled contraption ultimately more cheesy than frightening. Neon division Decal is opening the Bulgaria-shot U.S. production in 20+ U.S.markets on Jan. 13, simultaneous with its release on digital platforms.

At the start of 2021, we heard that filming was underway on A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio director Oliver Park’s horror thriller Abyzou, which was said to be “loosely based on a Jewish folk tale”. Five months ago, it was announced that Decal had picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the Millennium Media production and were planning to give the film a theatrical release later this year. Now we know exactly when Decal will be releasing the film – and it’s not going to be before the end of this year, but it’s not too far off. Abyzou, which is now going by the less unique title The Offering, will be reaching theatres in 20+ US Markets on January 13th. It will be available on VOD the same day. In the wake of a young Jewish girl's disappearance, the son of a Hasidic funeral director returns home with his pregnant wife in hopes of reconciling with his father. Directly beneath them in the family morgue, an ancient evil with sinister plans for the unborn child lurks inside a mysterious corpse. The horror film stars Nick Blood, Emily Wiseman, Allan Corduner, and Paul Kaye. This looks crazy scary!! It earned positive reviews at the fest: "benefits from magnificent production design which interweaves character information & subtly obscured plot points whilst combining with Lorenzo Senatore’s cinematography to create a heady atmosphere." A must watch if you're a horror fan.

The need to adapt to a changing world and the need to stay connected to ancient things collide in Oliver Park’s chilling second feature film, which screened at Fantastic Fest 2022. Rooted in the challenges of combining an ancient way of life with modern values, it’s also a story about the many kinds of love which exist within families, and how sometimes the most sympathetic of motives are what lead us astray.

Art (Nick Blood) hasn’t been to see his father Saul (Allan Corduner) for several years. Though one suspects that the reasons why they have found themselves at odds run deeper, the ostensible cause of it is Claire (Emily Wiseman), the gentile woman whom Art has chosen to marry. She is now pregnant and keen to find a way of bringing the family back together. Art, however, has another motive for returning, stemming from a crisis which he has.

Originally shot as Abyzou, The Offering begins with the camera slowly moving through rooms filled with candles and symbols. A rooster jumps into view, only to have its throat cut as part of a ritual. But this isn’t some voodoo ceremony or satanic offering, this is Hasidic mysticism. And, like so many other forms of magic, it doesn’t end well for the practitioner.

Art has come home, hoping to reconcile with his much more Orthodox father Saul. His wife Claire. has come along as well, although being told “Art may love you, but you’ll never be family” has made her less than enthusiastic about the trip. They hope the prospect of a grandchild will soften his attitude. We soon find out that the old man has indeed softened his opinions about Claire.

There are countless horror movies dealing with various kinds of demons and possession, but not very many that take the time to explore and showcase ancient Jewish lore and demonology. The first movie that comes to mind is 2019’s The Vigil, a terrifying and consummate film about a young man in Brooklyn’s Hasidic Borough who agrees to fulfill the duties of a shomer, which in Judaism is someone who watches over a deceased person until burial. Written by Hank Hoffman and Jonathan Yunger and directed by Oliver Park, The Offering is also set in Brooklyn’s Hasidic community and takes a deep dive into Kabbalah lore and demonology. The Offering is Park’s feature film directorial debut and premiered at this year’s Fantastic Fest. The Offering skillfully blends traditional Jewish lore with the haunted house subgenre and the result is a genuinely scary experience.

Exclusive: Decal has acquired U.S. rights to Millennium Media’s horror-thriller Abyzou out of the Cannes Market, with plans to release it in theaters later this year.

In Abyzou, the son of a Jewish funeral director returns home, in hopes of reconciling with his orthodox father, with his pregnant wife in tow. But his intentions are put to the test when the family morgue receives the body of a mysterious corpse containing an ancient entity with a sinister plan for his unborn child.
