In today’s TV news roundup, MTV announced when the 2021 “MTV Movie & TV Awards” will air, and Netflix revealed the premiere date for the third season of “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.”

MTV announced that the 2021 “MTV Movie & TV Awards” will air live from Los Angeles on May 16. Following that event, MTV will air “Movie & TV Awards: Unscripted” (working title) on May 17, which will recognize the best moments from reality shows and celebrate everything reality TV. Hosts, honorees, performers, presenters and additional details for both events will be announced at a later date. Sponsors of the two-night celebration include The Real Cost (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and Sonic.

Following the second season release of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous this past January, DreamWorks Animation announced that the series has been renewed for a third season, and ahead of its May 21st premiere on Netflix, a new teaser trailer has been revealed, promising a new threat on Isla Nublar.

"DreamWorks Animation today announced that Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous will return for a third season on Netflix May 21, with 10 new episodes. A new teaser trailer and poster reveals a new, sinister threat will emerge on Isla Nublar.

The stakes have changed with Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous season 2, moving from the frantic “get off the island before the ferry leaves” pacing of the first season to a survival-oriented, mystery-solving season where the dinosaurs get some kinder treatment.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 2 is officially in the works at Netflix, ready to reveal the fate of our calculatingly cliffhung sextet of teen survivors.

Netflix’s renewal makes official what was up until now heavily teased regarding the second season of Camp Cretaceous, the animated series spinoff of the Jurassic World/Park film franchise. Thus, with Season 1 of the series having left its central characters to fend for themselves on an island populated by dinosaurs, the streaming giant is already signaling that the wait for Season 2 won’t be too long, revealing a 2021 release window. My five year old nestled under one arm. My ten year old clutched the other. And I’ll admit, my hands were covering my face a couple of times. That, in a nutshell, was the family experience of watching the first season of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.

If you’re familiar with the legacy of Jurassic Park, you know the premise: there’s a theme park full of genetically engineered dinosaurs (where some catastrophe always happens). Based on the events of the first season, the series takes place concurrent to the events in Jurassic World, in which a monstrous original dinosaur engineered by Dr. Henry Wu, the Indominus Rex, escapes to terrorize the park.

DreamWorks Animation series “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” coming to Netflix on Sept. 18, immediately immerses viewers in the universe of the popular franchise — shaky camera shots, a roaring Tyrannosaurus rex and characters fleeing stampeding dinosaurs.

As we pull back, however, viewers can see the bedroom of young Darius (voiced by Paul-Mikél Williams), who’s playing a video game as he’s about to go off to Isla Nublar with other teen campers (and is soon to face similar terrors).

The meta opening is a grabber, but for CG lighting/compositing director Kathy Tran, whose job is to use subtle shades of light and color to give a show its look, the degree of difficulty in distinguishing between the world of a video game and an animated “real” world was high.
