Outlander may be ending with its eighth season, but new spin-off series Outlander: Blood of My Blood is hoping to keep fans' heart rates soaring for years to come.

The highly anticipated romance prequel was conceived in 2022, officially ordered by Starz in 2023, filmed in 2024, and will be released in 2025. The plot of Outlander: Blood of My Blood follows the parents of Outlander's two main lovebirds, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Beauchamp (Caitríona Balfe). The television franchise is based on Diana Gabaldon's Outlander book series, which she wrote over the span of 30 years (1991 to 2021).

Two least favorite characters from Outlander are set to appear in the upcoming prequel Blood of My Blood based on the latest image from the series. Shared by Outlander's official Instagram page, the new images showcase Dougal and Colum MacKenzie, a.k.a. Jamie’s uncles, who will be featured in the new series, which is yet to have a release date. The duo is well-known for their “imposing presences” at Castle Leoch during the early seasons of Outlander and were portrayed by Graham McTavish and Gary Lewis, respectively. Exclusive: Saoirse Ronan, a four-time Oscar nominee, has been earning an entirely new set of props for her performance in Blitz, the latest feature from British filmmaker Steve McQueen.

In the WWII pic, Ronan plays Rita, a young mother searching for her son who has gone missing during Germany’s aerial bombardment of London. Rita also is a keen musician and can more than carry a tune. In one scene, she is chosen to sing for a live BBC wartime radio broadcast and performs the gentle but defiant song “Winter Coat.” Ronan has now recorded a new live version of the song, which you can watch above.

Writer-director Steve McQueen has become adept at making movies of lost characters trying to find their way back to their families. He did it with 12 Years a Slave and hes doing it with his latest feature, Blitz. The historical drama is set in 1940, during Nazi Germanys blitz against Britain. At times harrowing and traumatic, McQueen never shows the moment the bombings happen. Still, there are close-ups of the weapons the Germans dropped on Londons civilian population that foreshadow exactly what will come next. Blitz is a capably made movie that, with a few exceptions, rings hollow.

Saoirse Ronan plays a distraught mother searching for her missing son in World War II East London in the trailer for Steve McQueen’s Blitz, which dropped on Thursday.

The drama follows George, a 9-year-old boy, played by Elliot Heffernan, in wartime London after his mother Rita (Ronan) sends him as an evacuee to safety in the English countryside. But defiant and determined to get back home on his own to his mother and grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, George encounters real danger as a distraught Rita tries to find her footloose son as he faces mounting peril.

“Why can’t you tell me, where’s my boy?” Rita pleads with London police officers at one point in the trailer. Meanwhile, George is seen scurrying for shelter alongside other Londoners in underground subway stations or bombed-out buildings as German Luftwaffe planes continue to bomb the British capital’s east end.

Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival has launched a new award to honor performances on the small screen and will hand the inaugural gong to Shōgun actor Hiroyuki Sanada.

Hiroyuki will receive the award at the festival’s 32nd edition, which runs November 16 to 23.

Hiroyuki is one of Japan’s most successful international exports with over fifty film credits. Beyond Shōgun, he is perhaps best known for his leading role in The Twilight Samurai, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Alongside acting in Shōgun, Hiroyuki also produces the FX show. He earned two Emmy nominations for the series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama and Outstanding Drama Series. The show also clocked several Television Critics Association Award nominations, including Program of the Year.

British filmmaker Steve McQueen will be feted at this year’s Camerimage Film Festival with the Outstanding Director Award for career achievement. The announcement was made this morning by the Polish festival.

“Steve McQueen is an artist known for his uncompromising engagement in tackling difficult social and political issues,” Marek Żydowicz, Camerimage Festival Director, said this morning.

“His vivid filmmaking style explores the problems of racism, violence, addiction, and inequality, constantly moving and provoking discussion, which situates him as one of the most important contemporary film creators. The 2024 New York Film Festival has set Steve McQueen’s Blitz, starring Saoirse Ronan and Elliot Heffernan, as its closing night film.

The movie, set in London during the blitzkrieg by the Germans during World War II, will receive its North American premiere on Oct. 10 at Alice Tully Hall.

McQueen wrote, directed and produced Blitz, which is told from the parallel perspectives of working-class single mother Rita (Ronan) and her 9-year-old son George (Heffernan) as they become separated in the city under siege.

We’re still months away from the next edition of the BFI London Film Festival, but the organisers have just teased us with its first programme announcement.

Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated Blitz is set to open the festival on 9th October. The gala screening, which will take place at the Royal Festival Hall, will also act as the film’s world premiere. Blitz is the third film by McQueen to open the festival, following Widows in 2018 and Mangrove in 2020.

However, the loyal following the nearly decade-long show had garnered, has already resulted in a prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. Now Starz has just announced the latest additions to the cast with six new names joining the clan for the series. First on the list is Sally Messham (The Hunt For Raoul Moat) as Mrs. Fitz, Ellen’s maid at Castle Leoch and Murtagh’s aunt — remember Murtagh? Terence Rae (Black Dog) comes on board and will star as Arch Bug, a bodyguard to Clan Grant while Sadhbh Malin (Conversations with Friends) will be playing Jocasta Cameron, the youngest child of the MacKenzie clan.

The prequel series to Starz’s Outlander has found its lead actors and is heading into production.

Filming has begun in Scotland on Outlander: Blood of My Blood, a show that will focus on the parents of the leads in the main series. Starz previously said the prequel would center on Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) mother and father; the premium cabler now confirms that Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) parents will also be part of the story.

Harriet Slater (Pennyworth) and Jamie Roy (Lifetime’s Your Boyfriend Is Mine) will play Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, who will eventually become Jamie’s parents in 18th century Scotland. The ensemble for Starz‘s upcoming Outlander prequel spinoff Outlander: Blood of My Blood continues to expand as the show unveils casting for familiar characters and new additions. In the latest round of reveals, Sadhbh Malin and Terence Rae join as Joscasta Cameron and Arch Bug, two characters who have made quite an impression on audiences over the flagship show’s run. As fans will recall, Jocasta is the feisty youngest child of the MacKenzie clan and sister to Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) mother, Ellen (Harriet Slater). The character is played by Maria Doyle Kennedy in the original series. Sally Messham, Alisa Davidson, Annabelle Dowler, and Harry Eaton (Phil Sharp; Callum Heinrich; Ori Jones; We Are Lumosia) Meanwhile, Hugh Ross plays Arch Bug in Outlander, and he memorably made a move to acquire the lost Jacobite gold that had been hidden under Fraser’s Ridge in Season 7 but lost his wife in the process.

The prequel series “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” at Starz is rounding out its cast with six new additions.
