4 fantasy TV show cancellations we'll never get over
Image
It's an unfortunate fact that, as television fans, we're always one announcement away from our favorite shows being taken away from us. We can all inevitably remember where we were when we heard that our favorite show was canceled. If you're a fan of fantasy shows, you can absolutely remember the exact reaction from the fandom when your chosen show was abruptly canned.

Fantasy fans might be some of the most devoted, because you can guarantee we will fight to save our shows and launch petitions that reach millions of signatures. Sometimes the efforts aren't successful, but that doesn't change the tenacity. There have been so many regrettable cancellation decisions made over the years about fantasy shows that deserved so much better.

Obviously, the most recent example of a fantasy TV show cancellation we're not getting over anytime soon is Prime Video's The Wheel of Time, but there are endless...

'My Lady Jane' Star Was "Gutted" By Series Cancellation by Prime Video
Image
While many Prime Video subscribers are currently reeling from the cancellation of The Wheel of Time, some still have not forgiven the streaming giant for killing off another fantasy show last year. As a unique sell, a show about a Tudor queen and mythical monsters is up there with some of the best, but despite some incredible reviews, the series did not make it beyond its first season. Now, actor Edward Bluemel has broken his silence on the devastating cancellation.

In an interview with Collider, Bluemel discussed the demise of My Lady Jane while talking about his latest project, Washington Black, explaining how the show’s unique premise deserved so much more. The series, which featured an alternate Tudor history, also starred Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey. Bluemel starred as Jane's husband, Lord Guildford Dudley. He said:

"Its tone was unique and I thought its approach to storytelling was actually really special.

The series, which featured an alternate Tudor history with mythical creatures, also starred Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey. Bluemel starred as Jane's husband, Lord Guildford Dudley. When speaking with Collider's Christina Radish for Washington Black, Bluemel says the show "holds a really special place in my heart." He explains, "I think it was really unique and I think it approached fantasy, historical fiction and romance in a really beautifully messy, fun way that was just so different to anything else I’ve ever watched."

Fresh Kills Review: Jennifer Esposito’s Thoughtful Take on the Mafia Genre
Image
Jennifer Esposito’s Fresh Kills does not unfold in the bluster and bravado one might expect from a mafia narrative. Instead, it invites us to peer into the quiet, suffocating corners of a world where family ties, rather than the criminal enterprise itself, become the true source of anguish.

Set against the grim backdrop of Staten Island—a place as decayed and overcast as the lives it holds—the film traces the lives of two sisters, Connie and Rose, caught within the gravitational pull of their father’s shady empire. What seems like a film about mobsters quickly reveals itself to be something far darker: a meditation on the corrosion of the soul when familial loyalty trumps moral reckoning.

Esposito, in her directorial debut, does not give us the gritty world of Goodfellas or The Sopranos, where men do battle in an underworld of violence. She gives us a quieter...

5 One-Season Fantasy TV Shows That Are Still Worth A Watch
Image
The fantasy genre is well-suited for long-form storytelling, but there are some TV shows that are still worth watching, even if they're only one season. While fantasy stories often work better when they're lengthy and complex, they have a tendency to be canceled by networks and streaming services. There are many fantasy series that were canceled before they could complete their original plans, with some of these fantasy shows ending on frustrating cliffhangers. This may turn viewers off of incomplete or short fantasy series, but there are a few one-season ones worth watching.

Short fantasy shows can make for great escapes from reality, even if they were initially supposed to continue for longer. Although some series that are canceled are left with unsatisfying endings, others remain watchable despite shortened runs. There are quite a few one-season fantasy series that still hold up, even if they had the potential to go beyond their first outings.

Every Emily Henry Romance Book Being Adapted As A Movie Or TV Show
Image
Emily Henry has taken the romance genre by storm—with several of her romance novels becoming New York Times bestsellers year after year. With her book's ever-growing popularity among fans, it's no surprise that Emily Henry's romance novels are being adapted for screens. From Beach Read, the author's first foray into adult romance, to her latest release, Funny Story, every one of Henry's novels from the last five years has been optioned for TV series or film. And a variety of big-name studios and production houses are already attached to each project.

Henry's relatable and compelling romances make her books a top choice when it comes to romantic book-to-screen adaptations—and if studios stay faithful to the source material, the rom-com adaptations may soon become classics. There were some good fantasy TV shows this year, but some deserved a lot more attention!

Every year, TV networks and streamers produce fantasy shows. In 2024, we got new seasons of House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power, and there’s always more around the corner. 2025 will feature the returns of shows like The Wheel of Time and the debut of a new Game of Thrones prequel in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which we can see getting a lot of love and acclaim.

But sadly, some shows slip under the radar. Some fail to find an audience and end before their time, while others survive and have a chance to grow their viewership. Here are eight fantasy series from 2024 that deserved more attention and provided fantasy lovers with great entertainment!

12 fantasy and sci-fi shows canceled in 2024 we’re still salty about
Image
2024 had a lot of TV shows ending, which included plenty of sci-fi and fantasy shows. And some of those endings left fans hungry for more!

It's no surprise that TV networks and streamers have a bad habit of canceling some shows too early. That's more true for sci-fi and fantasy shows that have a harder time capturing a large audience to justify their large budgets. It's jarring that some shows barely seemed to get out of the gate before being cut short. From famous shows to more overlooked ones, here's a look at the sci-fi/fantasy show cancellations that really angered folks in 2024!

My Lady Jane: The 10 Funniest Moments Of Season 1
Image
The fantasy-romance TV show My Lady Jane was an immediate hit with critics and audiences when it premiered in June of 2024 on Prime Video, largely thanks to its sense of humor. Based on the book by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand, My Lady Jane took the best parts of period romances, speculative fiction, and comedy and combined them into one of the freshest takes on all three genres that audiences have seen in years. The comedic timing of the tremendous cast and the sharp writing make it one of the funniest shows of 2024.

Led by Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel as Jane Grey and Guildford Dudley, My Lady Jane relied on the central pairs' chemistry, and critics and audiences were not disappointed. The fact that My Lady Jane was canceled has been a source of upset and criticism against Amazon Prime. Plenty of other fantasy series that have...

6 shows cancelled in 2024 we’re still salty about
Image
As another year comes to an end, we start to look back at the TV shows we said goodbye to. Some cancellations hurt way more than others!

For this list, we’re looking at cancellations only, rather than shows that were given a final season order. It’s important to distinguish between the two. While being final seasoned hurts, cancellations tend to hurt more because the shows end on major cliffhangers with no resolutions.

All of these shows are either streaming originals or they can be watched on a streaming platform—and likely aren’t leaving those platforms any time soon. I still always recommend getting the DVDs or buying the digital copies of your favorite shows if you can, though, because you never know what the streaming platforms will do—yes, Max, we’re still looking at you!

Here are the six cancellations from 2024 that we’re still extremely salty about.

Why Prime Video Canceled My Lady Jane
Image
Remember when premature TV show cancellations were rare enough to inspire massive fan movements and force their home networks to bring them back? In the streaming era, the water cooler "monoculture" is no more, and streaming shows with plenty of fans seem to be canceled every single week. 2024 has seen the premature death of several notable titles, and some of them were canceled not long after they aired. "My Lady Jane," an Amazon Prime Video original, was among this season's casualties, and despite an outcry from fans, it doesn't seem to be coming back any time soon.

A historical romance with a fantastical twist, "My Lady Jane" is one of the weirder outings Prime Video has offered in recent years. As Erik Kain's Forbes review explains, the show "involves people known as Ethians who can change into animal forms and who are oppressed and outcast by the Verity, the...

10 Fantasy TV Shows Canceled Before They Could Conclude Their Original Plan
Image
The TV industry as of late has seen many cancellations when a show is not immediately, massively successful, resulting in several great fantasy TV shows that did not get to finish their original story plan. The collective of fantasy TV shows Netflix canceled too soon and Disney+ shows that were prematurely canceled is demonstrative of how the streaming era has not been kind to new shows, especially fantasy. Several of these shows garnered strong reviews, but not the groundbreaking kind they needed to be renewed.

Fantasy TV is expensive, leading to many shows being canceled because streaming services don't want to further invest when they aren't guaranteed a return. External circumstances are partially to blame; the pandemic disrupted the industry, while numerous TV shows were also canceled during the 2023 writers' strikes. However, fantasy shows that began and ended just in 2024 prove the industry's unwillingness to bet on stories that might need more time to flourish.
