The Other Review: An Unflinching Portrait of Grief
Image
A pristine modern home becomes the stage for a uniquely American nightmare in Paul Etheredge’s The Other. The film opens on a familiar portrait: Robyn (Olivia Macklin) and Daniel (Dylan McTee) are a well-meaning couple attempting to build a family after years of struggle with infertility.

Their solution is to foster Kathelia (Avangeline Friedlander), an eight-year-old girl rendered mute by a devastating family tragedy. The film quickly establishes an unsettling atmosphere, where the quiet corridors of their house seem to hold as many secrets as the silent child they have welcomed.

What begins as a domestic drama about the challenges of adoption soon curdles into something far more sinister. The central question is not simply what happened to Kathelia’s family, but what unseen force is now taking root in this new one. The film uses the supernatural to probe the anxieties simmering just beneath the surface of suburban life.

The Problem With Netflix's A Family Affair, Explained
Image
A Family Affair falls short of delivering a satisfying rom-com experience, with unlikable characters and a lack of chemistry between the leads. Characters, including Chris, Zara, and Brooke, come across as one-dimensional and flat, hindering character development and emotional investment. The romantic connection between Chris and Brooke is weak, with awkward and uncomfortable moments rather than genuine chemistry and tension.

By releasing A Family Affair on June 28, Netflix has introduced another movie that is supposed to contribute to the current revival of the rom-com genre. Offering a promising foundation for romance, comedy, and a tiny bit of drama, the movie tells the story of an insufferable movie star, his young assistant, and her single mother. Chaos is inevitable when love sparks between the star and the mom.

Hopes were high that A Family Affair would achieve the same success as its successors, such as Anyone But You or The Idea of You,...

A Family Affair Review: Fun, Flawed Entertainment Captures What It Means To Be A Netflix Movie
Image
A Family Affair balances comedy and drama, excelling in its casting and humor, but lacking chemistry between romantic leads. The film explores the value of seeing others beyond their roles and personal growth, while highlighting Netflix's limitations in visual storytelling. A Family Affair's success and shortcomings hint at the changing landscape of Netflix movies, emphasizing the importance of engaging visuals.

Watching A Family Affair really got me thinking about what it means to be a Netflix movie. The streaming giant has released many daring projects, including some of my favorite films of the past few years, but those don't end up defining the brand. They ask for all of our attention, and even benefit from the close rewatches that streaming makes easy. A Netflix movie, as it's culturally understood, is much less demanding. It accepts, or perhaps embraces, that the audience's eyes won't always be on the screen.

‘Filthy Rich’ & ‘NeXt’ Canceled At Fox
Image
Filthy Rich and NeXt are both ending after one season on Fox, Deadline has confirmed.

The network will not renew either series for a second season, though both shows will see out their current runs. Low ratings — both shows are averaging a 0.5/3 in the adults 18-49 demo — and uncertainty are behind the cancellation of the series, which were both originally intended for summer runs.

NeXt has aired three episodes of its 10-episode order, while Filthy Rich has aired five of its 10 episodes.

Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich stars Sex and the City alumna Kim Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, the matriarch of a mega-rich Southern family famous for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After her husband dies in a plane crash, Margaret and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will — threatening their family name and fortune.

John Slattery in Next (2020)
‘Filthy Rich,’ ‘Next’ Canceled After 1 Season Each at Fox
John Slattery in Next (2020)
Fox will not move forward with second seasons of “neXt” or “Filthy Rich,” TheWrap has confirmed.

Both dramas were originally scheduled to air earlier this year but were held until this fall due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The remaining episodes of both will continue to air as planned.

According to an individual familiar with the matter, both series were well-received at the network creatively but underperformed in the ratings. Complications related to the pandemic are also said to have been a factor in the decision.

“Filthy Rich,” which has aired five episodes so far, is currently averaging a 0.5 rating and 3.2 million total viewers per episode, including a week of delayed viewing. “neXt,” which has aired just two of its 10 episodes, is averaging a 0.5 rating and 2.8 million total viewers.

“Filthy Rich” stars Kim Cattrall, Gerald McRaney, Aubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Aguilar, Mark L. Young, Melia Kreiling, Steve Harris,...

‘Filthy Rich’ and ‘Next’ Canceled After Single Seasons at Fox (Exclusive)
Image
Neither “Filthy Rich” nor “Next” will be getting second seasons at Fox.

The network has decided to cancel both series after only a single season, Variety has learned exclusively. Sources say that rising production costs due to the Covid-19 pandemic played a significant part in the decision. Fox will air the remaining episodes of both shows, which were held back for fall due to the pandemic situation.

“Filthy Rich” and “Next” failed to draw strong enough audience responses to merit a second outing, with “Filthy Rich” averaging only 3.2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 after seven days of delayed viewing, and “Next” drawing only 2.8 million viewers per episode and the same rating in delayed. News of the dual cancelation comes only five episodes into the run of “Filthy Rich,” and after only two episodes of “Next” have seen air on the network.

“Filthy Rich” centers around the aftermath...

‘Mnf’ Simulcast Tops Primetime For ABC; Fox’s ‘Filthy Rich’ First New Fall Show To Arrive On Muted Opening Night Of Covid-Impacted 2020-21 Season
Image
ABC’s simulcast of Monday Night Football topped primetime last night, when the Las Vegas Raiders christened their new home with a victory over the New Orleans Saints. ABC’s telecast drew a 1.6 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.85 million viewers in Nielsen’s Live+Same Day numbers.

Monday signaled the kickoff of sorts as well to the fall TV season, though the coronavirus pandemic has left it more muted than usual, with usage down 21% from the opening night of the 2019-20 season. Popular returning scripted series are a main driver for getting viewers back to broadcast TV in the fall, and we won’t see those until late October-November. The only actual new original to make it to screens last night was Fox’s Kim Cattrall-starring Filthy Rich, held over from last season. It was preceded by the network debut of L.A.’s Finest, which jumped...

Image
As we roll toward the coronavirus-disrupted fall TV season, Fox has set premiere dates for a pair of drama series. Its Kim Cattrall-fronted Filthy Rich will bow at 9 p.m. Monday, September 21, following the 8 p.m. launch of Spectrum Originals pickup L.A.’s Finest, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba.

Watch the trailer for Filthy Rich above and a promo for L.A.’s Finest below.

When Fox released its initial fall schedule back in May, Filthy Rich was set for the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot, with Season 1 of L.A.’s Finest as the lead-in for new AI drama neXt on Mondays. That John Slattery-fronted show now is taking the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot, as Fox revealed a week ago.

Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich stars Sex and the City alumna Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, the matriarch of a mega-rich Southern family famous for creating a wildly successful Christian television network.

Filthy Rich, NeXt Among Shows Pushed to Fall as Networks Scramble for Content
The Masked Singer (2019)
It looks like viewers will need to wait much longer for some of the highly-anticipated shows that were set to air during the 2019-20 season.

Deadline is reporting that Fox dramas Filthy Rich and NeXt are now targeting fall launches as the network plans to make sure it has enough content for the 2020-21 TV season.

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, there's no telling when production on TV shows can start back up, and both of the above shows are already in the can.

Putting the network's marketing muscle behind two new shows that are already completed is a good idea, as opposed to airing reruns.

The outlet notes that the network will have a full slate of animated comedies. The animated shows typically enter production several months in advance, and can continue to be made during the coronavirus pandemic.

The likely scenario is that the cast of all the...

Fox’s ‘Filthy Rich’ & ‘NeXt’, ABC’s ‘United We Fall’ Eye Fall Premieres As Nets Look To Secure Originals For 2020-21 Season Amid Pandemic
Image
Fox is expected to have at least two new drama series on the fall schedule, Filthy Rich and NeXt, along with a full slate of animated comedies, while ABC is considering holding multi-camera comedy series United We Fall for fall. It is part of an effort by the broadcast networks to stockpile original content for next season as coronavirus-related Hollywood production is entering its third month with no end in sight. For that reason, CBS recently changed its scheduling plans for the latest season of The Amazing Race, leaving it in the can for fall.

When March rolled around, Fox still had its two high-profile midseason drama series, Tate Taylor’s Filthy Rich, starring Kim Cattrall, and the AI-themed NeXt, headlined by John Slattery, on deck with no scheduled premieres. Then the coronavirus outbreak escalated, shutting down all filming. In fact, NeXt became the first Hollywood production with a confirmed...

Aaron Lazar Replaces Steven Pasquale on Fox’s ‘Filthy Rich’ in Role’s Second Recasting
Aaron Lazar
Aaron Lazar is replacing Steven Pasquale as Reverend Paul Luke Thomas on Fox’s upcoming Kim Cattrall-led Southern drama, “Filthy Rich,” in the second recasting for that co-star role.

The part was played by David Denman on the pilot of the series, a family drama from “Ma” filmmaker Tate Taylor “in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results.” The show is slated to debut at midseason on the broadcast network.

A Fox spokesperson confirmed Lazar’s casting to TheWrap, saying Pasquale left the project a week before the start of production Friday in New Orleans, citing personal reasons, not creative ones.

‘Filthy Rich’ Recasts A Series Regular As David Denman Exits Fox Drama
Tate Taylor
Exclusive: One of the series regular roles Tate Taylor’s drama Filthy Rich, which was picked up to series by Fox last night, has been recast. The part was played in the pilot by David Denman.

According to sources, the producers are going to the original vision for the character which had been altered when Denman was cast.

Recastings are unfortunate but inevitable byproduct of the networks’ pilot season model when 70+ pilots are being cast simultaneously, racing against a deadline while competing for talent with the other broadcasters as well as cable and streaming networks. So far this upfront, there have been recastings on four newly picked up series

The soapy Filthy Rich, which is being eyed as a companion for hip-hop family drama Empire, hails from The Help writer-director Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, with Kim Cattrall starring and producing.

Fox Orders Tate Taylor Drama ‘Filthy Rich’ to Series
Kim Cattrall and Aubrey Dollar in Filthy Rich (2020)
The New Fox is piling on the drama.

The broadcaster has issued its fifth order for a drama series, this time for “Filthy Rich,” a southern Gothic family drama which hails from “Girl on the Train” and “The Help” director Tate Taylor.

It’s understood that Fox had been keen to pick up the project earlier this week, however, Taylor’s schedule proved a stumbling block. The director is due to shoot a movie this summer which would have prevented him from overseeing the writers room.

The new one-hour drama centers around the aftermath of a plane crash which kills the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After his death, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune.

Fox Picks Up Tate Taylor Southern Drama ‘Filthy Rich’ Starring Kim Cattrall To Series
Fox has ordered its fifth drama series for the 2019-20 season. The network has picked up Filthy Rich, a soapy drama from The Help writer-director Tate Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, with Kim Cattrall to star and produce.

Filthy Rich, which is being eyed as a companion for hip-hop family drama Empire, was one of five Fox drama pilots which generated strong buzz consistently throughout the pilot process. The other four, Prodigal Son, NeXt, Deputy and Untitled Annie Wiseman/Jason Katims, were picked up to series on Thursday.

As we reported at the time, the reason Filthy Rich, which co-stars Gerald McRaney, was not picked up to series with its peers was that details were still being worked out. They had to do with writer/director/exec producer’s Taylor availability as his film schedule may not allow for the series to be ready for fall.

Here Are the 3 Broadcast TV Shows We’re Still Awaiting Decisions On
Rob Lowe, Marcia Gay Harden, Luis Guzmán, and Boris Kodjoe in Code Black (2015)
Updated May 24 at 7:31 a.m. Pt with “Code Black” canceled by CBS.

Is “Ghosted” coming back?

That’s a question on viewers’ minds as upfronts week comes to a close, with Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW all having announced their fall programming schedules as of Thursday. ‘Cause some of those slates have holes in them, meaning the statuses of almost half a dozen shows on broadcast television are still up in the air.

Look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC and The CW, who have already killed or renewed everything they’re going to — fans need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.
