Netflix marked its first decade in Spain with a red-carpet gala at Madrid’s Galería de Cristal on 10 June, where co-ceo Ted Sarandos pledged to invest more than €1 billion in local production between 2025 and 2028. The celebration also unveiled a new slate built around three of the country’s most recognisable faces.
Ester Expósito headlines Polo Menárguez’s psychological drama El Talento, shot last autumn in the Basque Country and set for a 5 September theatrical bow before streaming on Netflix. Adapted from Arthur Schnitzler’s novella Fräulein Else, the film casts Expósito as a prodigy forced into a harrowing moral bargain, positioning the Élite alum for her highest-profile cinema role to date.
Álvaro Morte confirmed on Rtve’s Late Xou that he will lead Dos Tumbas, an eight-episode thriller written by the Carmen Mola collective and directed by Kike Maíllo, centred on the disappearance of two teenagers and driven by a grandmother-detective played by Kiti Mánver.

Chilean reggaeton is everywhere. Back in 2022, Cris Mj’s ”Una Noche en Medellín” went so immensely viral it caught the eye of Colombian perreo queen Karol G, who eventually drafted him for a remix that swelled with new life on her blockbuster LP Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season). Mj again popped up on last year’s summer smash, “Gata Only,” propelled into the stratosphere by rising star FloyyMenor and his warbled, not-always-sensical wordplay, even landing on President Barack Obama’s famed end-of-year playlist. While this recent string of chart-toppers has...

Film Movement has acquired of U.S. distribution rights to the non-linear foreign horror movie The Wailing (known as El llanto in Spanish).
Variety reports that the Spain-Argentina co-production will receive a U.S. theatrical release later this year, followed by digital and home entertainment.
In the film, three young women separated by decades and thousands of miles are terrorized by the same ethereal threat that nobody — not even they — can properly see. The entity manifests more like a trick of lighting than anything corporeal. In each case, when the women attempt to confront the presence, they hear the same horrific wailing.
Produced by Madrid’s Caballo Films, Pedro Martín-Calero makes his feature directorial debut from a script he co-wrote with Isabel Peña (The Beasts).
Ester Expósito, Mathilde Ollivier, and Malena Villa star.

Spain has a long and fruitful tradition of producing horror films that elevate the genre and become enduring classics domestically and abroad – think Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s “[Rec],” J.A. Elite season 8's murder lacks excitement. The characters are inconsistent and hard to root for. The series finale is fitting, but the story offers very few surprises along the way.
Elite follows a group of teenagers who study at Las Encinas, a super-exclusive school attended by those with a lot of money and power in society. One of the biggest aspects of the teen drama is the culture clash between those with scholarships and the ones who pay to go to the school. Elite season 8 once again explores that element, with students getting into situations that put them and their loved ones in danger. As with every season, Elite's final year once again revolves around a murder, but it feels like the same old in many ways.
Elite
Cast Pol Granch, Ester Exposito, Miguel Bernardeau, Georgina Amoros, Aron Piper, Martina Cariddi, Danna Paola, Miguel Herran, Manu Rios, Mina El Hammani,...

¿Te atreves a escuchar el llanto? © Universal Pictures

Seven years after his mesmerizing sci-fi drama on extraterrestrial sex, “The Untamed,” genre-defying Mexican auteur Amat Escalante switches gears once again to try his hand at a sharp-edged, quasi-detective story with “Lost in the Night.” His approach expectedly deviates from a straightforward whodunit. Escalante rejects both simplified villainy and stainless heroism, crafting individuals with clear motivations who never stop to consider their actions through a moral filter. The result is an at times jarring but always intriguing enigma that escapes facile classification, especially because it tends to veer into absurdism.
In just a handful of years since his breakout role in Fernando Frías de la Parra’s “I’m No Longer Here,” Juan Daniel García Treviño has become a familiar face in Mexican cinema, usually playing a member of a criminal organization. Here, Escalante pushes against such typecasting and places him on the righteous side of the fence, as Emiliano, a...

As the years have passed, the cast has been refreshed consistently to keep the drama fresh and exciting.
The latest seasons have failed to live up to the hype of the initial three seasons, and now, it's all ending.
On Wednesday morning, Netflix announced via social media that Elite Season 8 would bring the series to a close.
The news broke two days before the premiere of Elite Season 7, so those still hooked on the series still have plenty to look forward to.
The original cast included María Pedraza, Itzan Escamilla, Miguel Bernardeau, and Miguel Herrán.
Also on the original cast are Jaime Lorente, Álvaro Rico, Arón Piper, Mina El Hammani, Ester Expósito, Omar Ayuso, and Danna Paola.

Cannes frequently gets criticized for the paucity of Latin American representation in the main competition, so it was widely assumed that the new feature from festival veteran Amat Escalante, the 2013 best director winner for Heli, would be guaranteed a spot. Sad to report that watching Lost in the Night (Perdidos en la noche), it’s easy to see why it was shuffled off to a sidebar. The Mexican filmmaker moves out from the shadow of his former mentor, Carlos Reygadas, with his most accessible work to date in this revenge thriller, which is engrossing enough but also a bit meandering and underpowered.
Escalante’s fifth feature takes its cues more from his experience in television on Narcos: Mexico than from his previous big-screen work, which could in theory bring him to a wider audience. But it lacks the tight cohesion of that series at its best, and softens the jarring intensity,...

Every killer's story in Elite is unique as their motives are at the heart of several other storylines and mysteries. First streaming on Netflix in 2018, the Spanish teen drama followed the lives of several students attending a prestigious high school, known as Las Encinas. While close friends, Samuel (Itzan Escamilla), Nadia (Mina El Hamanni), and Christian (Miguel Herrán), are excited to start afresh at the elite institute, they soon find themselves regretting their decision as they find themselves involved in a murder investigation after their classmate, Marina (María Pedraza), is killed. What follows is a chain of chaotic events, resulting in several violent confrontations, huge betrayals, and tense rivalries.

When Ester Expósito walked the red carpet in Cannes two years ago, she swore she’d be back.
“I was here for a brand, to show off some jewelry,” says the actress, who became a fashion trendsetter and online influencer — with 28 million followers on Instagram — after her turn as the cold, manipulative Carla Rosón Caleruega in Netflix’s Spanish teen drama hit Elite. “But when I was up there on those steps, I thought: ‘I’m going to come back soon, not with a brand with a movie.”
As good as her word, Expósito has returned to the Croisette this year as one of the stars of Lost in the Night, the new crime drama from Mexican director Amat Escalante, which premiered in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard and is being sold worldwide by The Match Factory.

When Rigoberto Duplas, the worrying conceptual artist and antagonist of Amat Escalante’s new film, tells Emiliano, our steadfast lead, that the cheap glass in his modernist mansion has a tendency to “rattle,” it sounds like a dig. Luckily, it’s a tendency our hero doesn’t share. Played with furrowed seriousness by Juan Daniel García (a standout in the recent Robe of Gems), Emiliano is the most convincing part of Escalante’s muddled mystery: a film about a young man on a mission to avenge his mother who disappeared after protesting the sale of a local mine.

Exclusive: Netflix has put Bandidos, a thriller series about an underwater heist, into production.
The drama follows the story of Miguel (Alfonso Dosal) and accomplice Lilí (Ester Expósito), who are joined by a group of bandits as they attempt to retrieve treasure from an underwater grave of a Spanish galleon that sunk in the Gulf of Mexico during the War of Independence. However, they’re not the only ones after the bounty.
Shot in Spanish, the series also stars Juan Pablo Medina, Mabel Cadena, Nicolás Furtado, Andrés Baida, Andrea Chaparro, Juan Pablo Fuentes and Bruno Bichir among others.
Pablo Tébar is writer and showrunner on the series, which our sources say will feature a “massive underwater heist.” We understand the action will occur in several different settings, however.
Rambo: Last Blood and Get the Gringo director Adrian Grunberg is the director.
The series is set to launch in 2024. It marks...

Lost in the Night, starring Juan Daniel Garcia, Barbara Mori, Ester Exposito, Fernando Bonilla, and Maria Fernanda Osio, will debut in the Cannes Premiere section of the festival and we’re pleased to debut new images from the film, which clocks in at 113 minutes.

Sony Pictures International Productions and Amazon Prime Video recently joined forces with Álex de la Iglesia on the feature film series “The Fear Collection.” It kicked off with Álex de la Iglesia‘s Veneciafrenia, and next up is Venus, hailing from Jaume Balagueró ([Rec], [Rec 2], Sleep Tight).
The second film in the anthology film series is described as a supernatural horror story that’s set in an urban survival environment with elements of modern witchery.
Venus is inspired by Hp Lovecraft’s “Dreams in the Witch House” and stars Ester Expósito, Ángela Cremonte, Magüi Mira, Fernando Valdivieso and Federico Aguado.
We’ve learned today that Venus has been rated “R” for…
“Strong bloody violence, language, and some drug use.”
You can watch the international trailer below.
Meagan wrote in her TIFF review for Bd, “Venus makes for a slick and breezy action-horror movie far more memorable for its gruesome high-octane thrills than its cosmic chills.
