Cannes 2017 Cinéfondation winners revealed
First Prize (2014)
Cristian Mungiu lead the jury at the 70th edition of the festival.

The winners of the 20th Cinéfondation Selection at the Cannes Film Festival have been announced.

The Cinéfondation Selection consisted of 16 student films, chosen out of 2 600 entries coming from 626 film schools around the world.

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu was president of the Jury that also included Clotilde Hesme, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Barry Jenkins and Eric Khoo.

They handed out the prizes during a ceremony held in the Buñuel Theatre, followed by the screening of the winning films, which were:

First Prize:

Paul Est LÀ (Paul Is Here)

Directed by Valentina Maurel

Insas, Belgium

Second Prize:

Heyvan (AniMal)

Directed by Bahram & Bahman Ark

Iranian National School of Cinema, Iran

Third Prize:

Deux ÉGARÉS Sont Morts (Two Youths Died)

Directed by Tommaso Usberti

La Fémis, France

The Cinéfondation allocates a €15,000 grant for the First Prize, €11,250 for the Second and €7,500 for the Third.

The Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury headed by Cristian Mungiu and including Clotilde Hesme, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Barry Jenkins and Eric Khoo has awarded the 2017 Cinéfondation Prizes during a ceremony held in the Buñuel Theatre, followed by the screening of the winning films. The winners are:

First Prize

“Paul Est Là” (“Paul Is Here”)

The Institut National Supérieur des Arts du Spectacle (Insas), Belgium

Second Prize

“Heyvan” (“Animal”)

Directed by Bahram Ark and Bahman Ark

Iranian National School of Cinema, Iran

Third Prize

“Deux Égarés Sont Morts” (“Two Youths Died”)

Directed by Tommaso Usberti

La Fémis, France

2017 Cannes Film Festival Announces Short Film Lineup

One day ahead of its scheduled announcement of the feature film lineup, the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the official selection of short films headed to the 70th edition of the festival.

Nine films have been selected from 4,843 submissions to compete for the Short Film Palme d’Or. The lineup includes eight works of fiction and one animated short. The films come from countries including Finland, France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Greece, Iran China, Colombia and Sweden.

In addition, 16 films have been selected for the Cinéfondation Selection out of 2,600 submissions from film schools around the world. A jury presided over by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu will decide the winners of both selections.

Cristian Mungiu will head the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury

With the Official Selection of features for the 70th Cannes Film Festival (May 17-28) set to be revealed tomorrow (April 13), the line-up of Short Films has been unveiled in advance.

This year, the selection committee received 4,843 films, a slight drop from the 5,008 entered last year.

The nine films, eight works of fiction and one animation, are in the running for the Short Film Palme D’ or, to be awarded by president of the jury Cristian Mungiu at the official ceremony of the festival’s award ceremony on May 28.

More than half of the titles are from Europe, with the rest spread across the globe.
