Star Wars legend 'confirmed' for imminent return in new development
Image
The Star Wars franchise has found itself at something of a crossroads. On one hand, viewers are still enjoying the multitude of TV shows that have been produced from that galaxy so far, far away for the Disney Plus service. But on the other, they are anticipating the franchise's return to the silver screen in the upcoming movies confirmed to be coming from Lucasfilm in the next few years.

Having these larger-than-life movie characters on the small screen has been a wild experience. Much like we have seen with Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe, we've gotten used to experiencing these huge figures on the silver screen that it's crazy to just watch weekly episodes with them on the small screen. But, as Obi-Wan Kenobi's return in the 2022 Ewan McGregor-led Disney Plus series confirms, anything is possible in the universe of Star Wars.

Speaking of which, another cinematic superstar is...

Sydney Sweeney Recruits Her German Shepherd Puppy for Cameo in New American Eagle Campaign
Image
“Sydney has great jeans.”

That’s the tagline of a new fall 2025 American Eagle campaign that debuted this morning starring Sydney Sweeney wearing — you guessed it — a variety of denim. The actress even recruited her new(ish) German Shepherd puppy Sully for a cameo.

As the face of campaign, Sweeney will be seen on on some 3D billboards across the United States (on which she will “interact” with passersby) as well as on one of the most prominent locations in Las Vegas — on the exterior of Sphere. There will also be a Snapchat lens for which Sweeney will speak directly with users in addition to AI enabled “try-on technology so customers too can have great jeans.” Also under the deal, Ae will promote an edit of Sweeney’s favorite pieces for shoppers to peruse online and in stores.

But the collaboration runs deeper than modeling American Eagle wares: Sweeney collaborated...

After ‘The Wheel of Time’s Cancellation, Rosamund Pike’s Forgotten Fantasy Film Surges on Streaming
Image
Prime Video's decision to ax its fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, came as a rude shock to fans. And those disgruntled fans have been busy putting their money where their mouths are, quite literally. They've raised over $16,000 to support the series, which Prime Video claims was cancelled due to its hefty budget. Adding insult to injury is the fact that the streamer dumped the series only to pick up another fantasy title as a replacement. However, it appears some have begun to look elsewhere to fill the Rosamund Pike-shaped void in their hearts. Barely two weeks after the show's cancellation, another fantasy project starring Pike has been surging through Netflix's charts.

Soon after landing her breakthrough role as Bond girl Miranda Frost in 2002’s Die Another Day, Pike ventured into several epic adventures. Over the next decade, her rising star power made her a sought-after talent in Hollywood,...

Hot Ted star describes psycho thriller as fun, scary, female version of Superbad
Cannes Film Festival
Around four weeks ago, it was announced that Ariana Greenblatt of Barbie, 65, and Borderlands, Billy Magnussen of No Time to Die, Road House, and The Franchise, and Ella Purnell of Fallout, Yellowjackets, and Army of the Dead had signed on to star in the “riotous” comedy thriller Hot Ted, which will mark the feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live segment director Hannah Levy. At the time, Levy said the project is “a psychosexual thriller as imagined by virgins. Mean Girls meets American Psycho.” Now, Magnussen has shared another description, calling Hot Ted a fun, scary, female version of Superbad.

Scripted by Grace McLeod, Hot Ted has the following synopsis: When 16-year-old true-crime podcast enthusiast Zoe’s (Greenblatt) parents send her to Camp Shady Pines for the summer against her will, she’s the immediate black sheep of the Beaver Cabin. The summer takes a turn when their bunk counselor...

'Fear Street: Prom Queen' Dominates Netflix Despite 31% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Look alive, Shadysiders! Netflix's newest slasher, Fear Street: Prom Queen, has earned the crown after just one weekend, taking top spot on the streamer's Top 10 list despite a Rotten Tomatoes score of 31%. Prom Queen marks the fourth entry in the popular Fear Street saga that began in 2021 with three movies released in quick succession, with the latest offering being a stand-alone film based on the 15th novel in R.L. Stine's young adult novel series.

Combining familiar elements from slasher films of yesteryear like Prom Night and Alice, Sweet Alice, Fear Street: Prom Queen follows prom season at Shadyside High as the school's wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. When a gutsy outsider (India Fowler) puts herself in the running, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of '88 suddenly finds itself in for one hell of a prom night.

'Fear Street: Prom Queen' Savaged by Critics & Audiences Alike on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Netflix's long-awaited Fear Street: Prom Queen is among the latest horror movies to premiere in the past few weeks, being released on the streaming service on May 23, 2025. Sadly, the fourth installment in the Fear Street film series isn't garnering the positive reviews many hoped for, and has seriously failed to live up to the trilogy that so impressed genre fans and critics back in 2021.

Fear Street: Prom Queen stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Chris Klein, Ariana Greenblatt, Lili Taylor, and Katherine Waterston. It is based on the novel "The Prom Queen," written by R. L. Stine from the teenage horror fiction series "Fear Street." The plot follows a masked killer who targets candidates at Shadyside High on the night of their senior dance in 1988. Although it had the potential to be a modern prom horror hit, possibly drawing inspiration from Carrie or Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II,...

Netflix’s ‘Fear Street’ Films, Ranked: How Does ‘Prom Queen’ Compare to the Trilogy?
Image
Most film critics turned their backs on “Fear Street: Prom Queen” the day it started streaming. And yet, halfway through its world premiere weekend, Netflix‘s trending teen slasher is still popular with plenty of subscribers. Co-written by director Matt Palmer and Donald McLeary, “Prom Queen” is a goofy-gory throwback about a pack of high school frenemies battling a masked killer in 1988.

A victim of the Shadyside curse series fans know all too well, Lori Granger (India Fowler) is convinced that winning the prom queen crown will clear her disgraced family name. But when the confetti flies and student blood starts to spill, our final girl becomes the epicenter for one of the worst massacres in the town’s history. Stalked by a silently snarky figure in a bright-red raincoat, queen bee Tiffany (Fina Strazza), “Carrie”-esque love interest Tyler (David Iacono), gossip Debbie (Rebecca Ablack), straight-a student Linda (Ilan O’Driscoll...

Image
Netflix is bringing back two beloved blockbusters next month, ahead of the story's next chapter. The streaming platform has announced that Now You See Meand Now You See Me 2 will become part of their catalog on June 1. The announcement comes as audiences prepare for the return of the franchise thanks to Now You See Me: Now You Don't, the first installment of the story in almost a decade. Netflix only has the rights to distribute the first two movies, but before the next step hits the big screen, the streaming platform is giving viewers a chance to catch up with what they have missed.

The first Now You See Me movie introduced the world to the concept of the Four Horsemen, the talented group of magicians who delight audiences with their unpredictable tricks. Unfortunately, that's not the only thing they're talented at. J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney...

How Netflix’s Latest ‘Fear Street’ Slasher Film Created a Terrifying Prom Experience for Fans
Image
Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen has allowed fans to immerse themselves in high school nostalgia — onscreen and in real life.

Based on author R.L. Stine’s books, the fourth film in the streamer’s slasher series began streaming Friday. Writer-director Matt Palmer’s feature stars India Fowler, Suzanna Son, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Ariana Greenblatt and Rebecca Ablack. Set in 1988, the movie centers on teen girls disappearing from a popular clique at Shadyside High.

During an interactive event that ran May 17-19, Netflix created a terrifying prom experience for visitors to the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles. On May 18, Palmer and the cast attended the Shadyside High Senior Prom ’88 experience as guests explored versions of the gymnasium, lockers, girls’ bathroom and more locations designed to frighten fans.

“Fear Street is a beloved franchise, so our main goal was for the experience to mirror everything the fandom loves about the...

Talking R.L. Stine, Tubular Tunes, and Killer ’80s Fashion with Fear Street: Prom Queen’s Matt Palmer, India Fowler, Fina Strazza, Rebecca Ablack, Ella Rubin, and Ariana Greenblatt
Image
As enamored as I was with the Goosebumps books at the public library when I was growing up, I was just as obsessed with R.L. Stine's Fear Street novels. There was something more dangerous about them, more edgy, more slasher-y. While Goosebumps sparked my imagination with frightful fun, Fear Street gave me something to look forward to fearing when I was old enough to cross the street to Shadyside.

I was fortunate to even own some Fear Street books at a young age, when an older cousin gave my family several grocery bags of books for my sister and I to enjoy. Nestled between used paperbacks of The Baby-Sitters Club and Full House stories were a stack of Stine's Fear Street titles (as well as a couple of Christopher Pike books), and ocassionally I would gaze at the eerie covers of these books, wondering what types of terror awaited me within its yellowed,...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Review – An Excruciating Return to Shadyside
Image
Ruthless yet inspired kills, expansive lore, and spirited personality made Leigh Janek’s Fear Street trilogy, based on the novels by R.L. Stine, the summer horror event of 2021. New standalone entry Fear Street: Prom Queen, nestled chronologically between Fear Street: 1978 and Fear Street: 1994, features none of that. Instead, the 1988-set slasher opts for shallow pastiche, bland kills, and a grating cast of characters. It makes for an excruciating return to the cursed town of Shadyside.

A quick recap reminding viewers of Shadyside’s penchant for cranking out masked serial killers kicks off Prom Queen before settling into introductions to the roster of prom queen candidates that’ll be targeted by the latest villain. Meek outcast Lori Granger (India Fowler) hopes to escape her family’s tarnished reputation by winning the coveted prom queen crown, but she has stiff competition with The Wolf Pack, the clique of mean girls led...

Fear Street: Prom Queen Review – Avoid This Slasher
Image
Plot: When the “it” girls competing for prom queen at Shadyside High start to disappear, a gutsy outsider discovers she’s in for one hell of a prom night.

Review: It’s been nearly four years since Netflix’s Fear Street trilogy released to the streaming service. And despite a decent amount of buzz, it took some time for us to get another entry. Now, Fear Street takes aim at the Prom, adapting the fourth novel in the series, The Prom Queen. And if there’s one setting that’s prime for a slasher movie, it’s the prom.

Fear Street: Prom Queen follows a group of students at Shadyside High, as they get ready for the 1988 prom. The “It Girls” are doing last-ditch efforts to get the vote for Prom Queen. There’s Tiffany Falconer and her group of mean girls, drug dealer Christy, and our final girl,...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Director & Cast Preview Their Gory 1980s Party Movie [Interview]
Image
Welcome back to Shadyside! Netflix’s Fear Street franchise returns with a new standalone installment, Fear Street: Prom Night.

I spoke with director/co-writer Matt Palmer and actors India Fowler, Suzanna Son, Fina Strazza, David Iacono, Ella Rubin, Rebecca Ablack, and Ariana Greenblatt about carving out their own unique corner of the Fear Street universe with a slasher that’s set in and steeped in the 1980s.

While 2021’s Fear Street trilogy drew broad inspiration from R.L. Stine‘s ’90s teen horror novels, Prom Queen is based on a specific book in the series — 1992’s The Prom Queen — but don’t expect a straight adaptation.

“Because it was a slasher movie and in slasher movies you have the whodunit element, it felt like we had to go in a different direction, and R.L. Stine’s really open to that,” Palmer explains. “I thought the book had an absolutely killer premise,...

Review: Fear Street: Prom Queen Isn’t Worthy of the Crown
Image
In 2020, with theaters struggling during Covid-19 lockdown protocols, Netflix made a genius play by acquiring Disney's Fear Street films for a triple-feature summer release. Horror fans were buzzing about Leigh Janiak's R.L. Stine adaptations, which became a minor cultural event. You'd think Netflix would ride that hype into future entries, right? Unfortunately, Matt Palmer's Fear Street: Prom Queen is slinking onto Netflix with little fanfare, as is the company's typical hushed (aka non-existent) release strategy. Even more unfortunate, Fear Street: Prom Queen is an underwhelming follow-up that lacks the presence and bite of Janiak's far superior trifecta—Fear Street by name, but unexceptional and sophomoric by comparison.

Palmer and co-writer Donald McLeary adapt Stine's "The Prom Queen" (1992), about a bloody high school celebration. The film revolves around Shadyside teen Lori Granger (India Fowler), a reluctant outcast running for prom queen against the "It Girls." Lori's main rival is...

Fear Street: Prom Queen Arrives: Netflix Unleashes 1988 Slasher Mayhem!
Image
The blood-soaked streets of Shadyside are calling once more. Netflix flings open the doors to a terrifyingly familiar past with the global premiere of Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest installment in the hit horror franchise based on R.L. Stine’s chilling book series. Available for streaming now, this fourth chapter transports viewers to 1988, promising a deadly dance steeped in ’80s slasher glory and the enduring curse that haunts the ill-fated town.

The arrival of Fear Street: Prom Queen marks a significant return for the franchise, nearly four years after the innovative weekly release of the Fear Street trilogy in the summer of 2021 captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim. That trilogy masterfully wove a narrative spanning centuries, and its success clearly signaled a potent appetite for Stine’s darker, more mature brand of horror.

The film’s 1988 setting is a deliberate dive into the era of big hair and even bigger shoulder pads,...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Review: Franchise Growing Pains Can’t Hold Back Matt Palmer’s Gnarly Winner
Image
Can an even meaner “Carrie” actually end well for the prom queen? In Netflix’s new “Fear Street” adaptation, Matt Palmer argues yes and no with a whip-smart teen horror movie co-written by the director and Donald McLeary. An even gorier “Heathers” crowned in the pitch-black comedy era of “Bottoms,” “Fear Street: Prom Queen” is anchored in the same vicious and girly roots as the original film trilogy from 2021 — albeit missing some of the scope and style inherent to Leigh Janiak’s three-part slasher epic. Still, Palmer and McLeary’s take is giddy and gruesome, a clever next chapter with a fresh killer whose bloody raincoat isn’t the only detail to scream “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

References don’t make a good movie any more than they make a good movie review, but “Fear Street: Prom Queen” successfully uses genre homage to carbonate R.L. Stine’s...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Review: A Rote Standalone Slasher in the ‘Fear Street’ Series
Image
Set in 1994, 1978, and 1666, respectively, Leigh Janek’s Fear Street trilogy is, in many ways, a perfect encapsulation of the streaming era. The films’ period settings are little more than justifications for needle drops, while the costuming and set design are so broad in their presentation that the characters feel like modern teens dressed up in historical drag. For the first two films in particular, the reference points are closer to Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and American Horror Story than to the slasher films of the mid ’90s or late ’70s, and the same can be said of the series’ newest incarnation, the 1988-set Fear Street: Prom Queen.

Also based on R.L. Stine’s long-running book series, Prom Queen continues the earlier films’ offbeat, often awkward melding of YA drama and R-rated gore, here set to the tunes of Bananarama, Billy Idol, Tiffany, and Duran Duran, among others. The Shadyside-versus-Sunnydale town rivalry...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Review: Death Stalks High School Halls in Overfamiliar Netflix Slasher Filled With Old Tropes
Image
Insanely prolific “Goosebumps” author R.L. Stine’s other major publishing franchise, the young adult “Fear Street” series, made a decent splash on Netflix four years ago with the premiere of three interlocking features, each set in the same fictitious “cursed” town during a different era. All directed by Leigh Janiak, the trio was uneven in some respects, but lively, stylistically diverse and reasonably ambitious — overall, a definite cut above the usual formulaic run of horror entries.

That sense of occasion is missing from the new “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” a belated stand-alone chapter that feels considerably more mundane. Reprising high-school slasher cliches dating back at least to 1980’s “Prom Night,” minus any particular invention or irony, this new entry is a slick-enough but disappointingly unimaginative effort that can’t even be bothered to reference the mythology established in the prior films.

The story is back in perpetually ill-starred burg Shadyside,...

Interview: Ariana Greenblatt, Ella Rubin, and Rebecca Ablack get into what makes a good slasher with Fear Street: Prom Queen
Image
2021 saw the release of The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix, and it had a pretty unique streaming schedule, being released back to back for three weeks. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the trilogy, but even four years later, it stands out as an interesting experiment. Now, we’re finally getting another entry, this time in the form of Fear Street: Prom Queen. But don’t worry if you read the book growing up, this one has plenty of surprises in store (my review for the film goes live tomorrow).

I chatted with castmembers Ariana Greenblatt, Ella Rubin, and Rebecca Ablack about their time making Fear Steet: Prom Queen. Ariana breaks down what makes the perfect final girl, while Ella talks about what makes a great slasher villain. And for a bit of fun, I asked the girls what film they would pair with Prom Queen for a fun...

‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ Director Matt Palmer Reveals ‘Alice, Sweet Alice’ Influence
Image
I spoke with Fear Street: Prom Queen director Matt Palmer about the look of the film’s killer, which draws inspiration from Alfred Sole‘s 1976 proto-slasher Alice, Sweet Alice.

“Alice, Sweet Alice was definite influence. There’s a chase scene in that with the killer in the raincoat. And I’m big giallo fan too, so I think there was a giallo element that I always wanted from the start,” Palmer explains to Bloody Disgusting.

“We were like, ‘What color of jacket we put against the red lockers?’ We looked at yellow, but that felt a bit too on the nose, because Alice, Sweet Alice already done that. We tried blue. And then one of our concept artists came back with red on red, which we hadn’t thought of because we were looking for something that wasn’t red, and it was like, ‘Oh, my God! That looks awesome!

"This Is a Female Version of 'Superbad'": Billy Magnussen Teases His New Horror Comedy With Ella Purnell [Exclusive]
Image
Billy Magnussen stars in the upcoming horror comedy Hot Ted as the titular character, who's either the perfect guy or a deranged serial killer...or both. It's a perfect role for the lantern-jawed Magnussen, who's played both lovable lugs and dead-eyed psychos. He spoke with Collider's Perri Nemiroff while promoting his new Disney live-action remake, Lilo & Stitch. Magnussen teases the tone of the film, which blends both horror and comedy into a teenage coming-of-age movie that he likens to a modern classic of the genre:

"There are these genre-blending elements that happen in films now. This is a female version of Superbad. Every good film has a good premise that’s an easy understanding. This is about young girls realizing people in their lives that they thought were safe can be dangerous, and that's terrifying. Someone I believed has always been safe is actually terrifying, and Hot Ted is about that.

One minute of Fear Street: Prom Queen looks a bit like 1980s Squid Game
Image
One minute is all it took to get us hooked. Netflix's latest R.L. Stine flick is set for release this weekend, and you know you will want to watch. Fear Street: Prom Queen is the fourth installment of the Fear Street franchise and might be the scariest. That is based on the one minute of footage the streaming giant gave us.

Fear Street: Prom Queen takes place in 1988 and follows the ongoings of who will be prom queen in Shadyside. The It Girls think they have the situation under control, but then an outsider is nominated for queen and all heck starts breaking loose.

The It Girls start disappearing, which might make us think the outsider is behind it. But why be so obvious? Surely, that is not the case.

One minute of Fear Street: Prom Queen is enough to make you watch (and be fearful)

The great thing...

Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen slasher brings blood, secrets and ’80s vibes
Image
Are you ready for slasher season, Netflix fans? With the summer movie releases (and into October), we can expect a bunch of horror films. Some of these will be quite good, as horror is a relatively underrated genre.

Of course, it isn't for everyone. Many don't like to see gruesome murders, and that is entirely fair. Even though the filmmaking might be brilliant, it is difficult to get past all the gore. Being scary and chilling is good, but being gross to be gross is bad.

The good thing about most R.L. Stine adaptations is that they take the intentional campiness of the original material, add the gore, and give us something relatively short and entertaining. For instance, Fear Street: Prom Queen, which debuts on Netflix on Friday, May 23, is only an hour and 28 minutes long.

Netflix's Fear Street: Prom Queen will be arriving soon

The film is Netflix's fourth...

Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix Walk the Red Carpet at Cannes ‘Eddington’ World Premiere | Photos
Image
Ari Aster made his Cannes Film Festival debut Friday with the world premiere of his latest psychological nightmare — this time a Western set in Covid times — on Friday. “Eddington” reunites the “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” filmmaker with the latter film’s Joaquin Phoenix. Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler also star.

Aster has become known as a master of the psychological horror genre following his breakout film “Hereditary,” an intense look at the consequences of inherited family trauma, in 2018. In “Eddington,” Phoenix plays local sheriff Joe Cross in a small town in New Mexico during the 2020 Covid pandemic. Cross comes to a head with Pedro Pascal’s Ted Garcia, the town’s mayor who leads the community into a world of chaos with his questionable decision-making. The film explores the power of fake news, the fragility of community and how conspiracy theories can lead to a rabbit...

Here’s How Seth Rogen’s ‘The Studio’ Is Helping in the Unique Promotional Strategy for ‘Now You See Me 3’
Image
The Studio, Apple TV+’s favorite comedy series, is making waves, and it’s not only because of its signature satire humor and Hollywood roasting. This time, it is because of a subtle and sly promotional strategy they used to promote the upcoming movie Now You See Me 3.

In a precise but brilliant cross-promotional move, the latest episode of the show features Dave Franco, playing an exaggerated version of himself, engaging in a crazy Las Vegas party right ahead of CinemaCon. Dropping subtle hints about the now you see me franchisee, this is a classic example of intelligent marketing where the leverage of one famous show or movie is taken for another.

Meta cameo by Drave Franco in The Studio wasn’t just for laughs

This meta-appearance of Dave Franco in The Studio is not only a regular cameo to add humor, but it’s also a strategic move...

New ‘Fear Street’ Posters Honor Prom Queens of Slashers Past
Image
Even though we've barely reached the summer movie season yet, it's been another killer year for horror. Particularly for slashers. Heart Eyes has already carved up Valentine’s Day, but later this month, Fear Street: Prom Queen will turn the end of the school year blood-red. The R.L. Stine Netflix film is returning genre fans to the cursed town of Shadyside. Now, the film is paying tribute to high school slashers' past with some new deadly posters.

The two new Prom Queen posters honor 1976’s Brian De Palma adaptation of Carrie and 1980’s Prom Night, the latter of which starred horror icon Jamie Lee Curtis. The Carrie-inspired poster mirrors the two-image classic design, showing the before and bloody aftermath of star India Fowler at Shadyside’s Prom. The tagline, “If You're Hungry For Horror… Come To Shadyside’s Senior Prom” is also very similar to Carrie’s chilling warning. Finally,...
