Exclusive: Dynamic Television is plotting to turn George Dawes Green’s Southern Gothic crime novel The Kingdoms of Savannah into a TV series.

The transatlantic production house has optioned the rights to the book, with writer Sheri Holman attached to write a pilot script. She will also be showrunner and executive producer.

Dan March and Carrie Stein will EP for Dynamic, which is known for series such as Harry Wild, The Sommerdahl Murders and Drops of God.

The novel is set the hauntingly beautiful but treacherous landscape of Georgia, where on a balmy Southern night at a local watering hole, a murder and mysterious disappearance set the stage for an unlikely detective — the doyenne of Savannah society, Morgana Musgrove. “Palm Royale” has been renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+, Variety has learned.

The series originally debuted on the streamer back in March with the season finale aired in May. It stars Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern as well as Allison Janney, Ricky Martin, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Amber Chardae Robinson, Mindy Cohn, Julia Duffy and Kaia Gerber, with guest stars Bruce Dern and the legendary Carol Burnett.

The series is set in 1969 and follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) “as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society,” per the official description. “As Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots, ‘Palm Royale’ asks the same question that still baffles us today: ‘How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?'”

Wiig was just recently recognized for her work in the series with a nomination from the first ever Gotham TV Awards.

The tech giant’s streaming service has renewed Palm Royale for a second season. The pickup for the Kristen Wiig-led comedy comes about a month after the 10-episode first season concluded.

Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie and produced by Apple Studios, Palm Royale is a true underdog story that follows Maxine Simmons (Wiig) in 1969 as she endeavors to break into Palm Beach high society. Armed with fabulous ensembles and accessories, as well as her quick wit, Maxine attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots. The dramedy asks the same question: How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?

Apple TV+’s 2024 lineup includes the new comedy series Palm Royale, which is set to premiere on March 20th. Loosely based on Juliet McDaniel’s 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, Palm Royale will kick off with the release of the first three episodes. Additional new episodes arrive on Wednesdays leading up to the May 8th season finale.

The WGA East’s second Showrunner Academy gets underway today, with the 31-member class taking part in a program designed to support television writer-producers, upper-level writers and new show creators in honing the skills necessary to become successful showrunners and TV industry leaders.

The Academy, which provides instruction from current showrunners and other industry professionals on a wide range of topics, is led by Diana Son and Frank Pugliese.

“Being a showrunner is so much more than being the creative voice of the show,” Son said in a statement. “It’s also managing a multimillion-dollar endeavor with over 100 employees. We’re bringing in accomplished and experienced showrunners who’re willing to share the breadth of their experience – the good, bad and the ugly – so new showrunners can have a head start on figuring out what kind of showrunner they’re going to be.
