Exclusive: Paramount Global just added another buzzy crime drama to its LA Screenings slate.

Paramount Global Content Distribution has picked up rights to Peacock’s Miami narcotics-dealer family drama M.I.A., which is from Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque and MRC and stars Shannon Gisela. Buyers will be introduced to the series over coming days.

Hundreds of acquisitions execs are expected on the Paramount lot, where other shows such as Boston Blue and Sheriff County are also among the wares on offer following last week’s Upfront pick-ups.

As for M.I.A., it’s going international after Peacock gave it straight-to-series order last year. Synopsis reads: “Running drugs is a family affair for Etta Tiger Jonze (Shannon), but when the family business is threatened, Etta is thrust into a life she never expected, forcing her to use her wits to survive as she navigates Miami’s criminal underground.”

Momma Run Away to Nevada in ‘Welcome to My Blue Sky’ Video
Image
Momma are hitting the road in more ways than one. In the new video for “Welcome to My Blue Sky,” the California bred, Brooklyn-based indie rockers travel through the small town of Yerington, Nevada with a camcorder in hand. The homemade, vintage-inspired aesthetic of the visual mirrors the style of their “Bottle Blonde” video.

In a statement, the band shared why they were pulled to the western town. “We made this video in Yerington, Nevada, which is a very small town that Etta’s family is from. It’s always...

Bette Davis Apparently Thought Her Gunsmoke Cameo Was Beneath Her
Image
In the "Gunsmoke" episode "The Jailer", Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake) and Matt Dillon (James Arness) are kidnapped by a bitter old woman in a black dress. Her name is Etta Stone, and she was played by the legendary Bette Davis (who was credited as "Miss Bette Davis"). Etta aims to hang Matt, as he killed her husband — a criminal — several years before. The old woman feels as if Matt himself committed a crime with his murder, however, and needed to face her own frontier justice. The episode also starred "Gunsmoke" regular-guest Bruce Dern (star of "Nebraska") as Etta Stone's son.

Working with a star of Davis' stature was, according to the trivia section on IMDb, intimidating for the "Gunsmoke" cast. Even though the show had been a hit for 12 seasons by the time "The Jailer" aired, there were still levels of fame that Arness and especially Blake weren't used to dealing with.

Momma Break Down New Album Welcome to My Blue Sky Track By Track: Exclusive
Image
Our recurring feature series Track by Track sees artists guiding readers through each song on their new release. Today, indie rockers Momma take a deep dive into their great new album, Welcome to My Blue Sky.

If Momma’s last album, 2022’s Household Name, was an ambitious manifestation of success as a touring rock band, Welcome to My Blue Sky captures the nervy rush of actually getting what they wanted. The Brooklyn band’s new album was written in green rooms and on hotel beds in rare off-days of a packed show schedule that began in 2022 and lasted over a year.

By the time bandleaders Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten made it back home and started work on Welcome to My Blue Sky with drummer Preston Fulks and bassist/producer Aron Kobayashi Ritch, they felt like they were different people than when they left. They had navigated major changes in their romantic lives,...

Every Season of Fox's Fringe, Ranked
Image
Coming off the success of Lost, J.J. Abrams, in collaboration with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, created Fringe. Running for five seasons, Fox's Fringe was one of the best science-fiction series of the 2000s, evolving overtime from a procedural with heavy science-fiction and horror elements into a serialized epic. Like other series created by Abrams, Fringe is infamous for its "Mystery Box" style of storytelling but loved for its characters, unique concepts, and expansive mythos.

Fringe is a procedural that follows Olivia Dunham, an FBI agent who's assigned to the Fringe Division to investigate seemingly paranormal cases. On her team initially are Walter and Peter Bishop, an estranged father/son duo; Astrid Farnsworth, Walter's lab assistant, and Phillip Broyles, Olivia's stern but caring boss; and Charlie Francis, Broyles' second-in-command, with the group often collaborating with the shady tech firm, Massive Dynamic, and its CEO, Nina Sharp. Together, they face all matters of fringe science,...

Kelly Clarkson Shocks With Bone Chilling Rendition Of Etta James Classic
Image
Kelly Clarkson returned to the past in a classic American Idol song performance. NBC wants people to remember that moment as the network’s website posted a video of the amazing performance. What makes it so amazing is that Clarkson performed the exact same song for her Idol audition a decade earlier.

Here is a look at that amazing Kelly Clarkson moment and how it compares to the first time she sang the Etta James classic.

Kelly Clarkson Hits Highs With Etta James Classic

Kelly Clarkson auditioned for American Idol in 2002, the show’s first season. While the singers in that first season weren’t all that good, and the production values were low, Kelly was a highlight and went on to become one of the most successful Idol alumni in history.

In the audition for American Idol, Kelly sang a Madonna song and a Glenn Miller song.

Justin Townes Earle’s Widow Slams Jason Isbell’s ‘Extremely Painful’ Song About Late Musician
Image
Justin Townes Earle’s widow, Jenn Marie Earle, excoriated Jason Isbell for his song about his friendship with the late musician, “When We Were Close,” and the “strong, visceral, and extremely painful reaction” the Earle family has had to it.

“When We Were Close” appears on Isbell’s 2023 album, Weathervanes, and though it’s never overtly stated that it’s about Earle, the song’s lyrics detail a relationship that turned sour and mutual struggles with addiction. The lyrics also appear to reference Earle’s death from an accidental overdose...

Stars: Georgiana Gillespie, Rebecca Banner, Vanessa Cruickshank, Stephen Good, Sarah Somerville, Caroline Burns Cooke, Tony De Souza, Cameron Wright, Lisa Ronaghan, Paul Hughes | Written and Directed by Alexandra Gillespie

Etta (Georgiana Gillespie) takes a job managing a halfway house between life and death, where newly deceased guests have the chance to do one last thing before crossing over. When her murdered friend Olivia (Rebecca Banner) arrives in breach of all the rules, she must juggle her responsibilities to the guests, help her friend get justice and not get caught by her interfering boss.

It’s hard to believe that Just One Last Thing is the debut feature from writer/director Alexandra Gillespie. 10 Dceu Deleted Scenes That Were Better Cut Out Of The Movie
Image
Some deleted scenes from Dceu movies turned out to be for the best, like the dark Superman scene in Batman v Superman that was deemed too intense. Wonder Woman had a cut scene that set up a connection to Justice League, but its removal allowed the film to stand on its own as a self-contained story. Several Dceu films had scenes cut, such as Slipknot's backstory in Suicide Squad, which ultimately saved time and set up an early shocking death.

Many Dceu scenes were deleted from projects set in the universe, and there are a few of them that were better left out. The Dceu started in 2013 with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. The director's vision for DC shaped up the universe, as Snyder would set the tone for most following movies, as well as cast the Dceu's major players. Now, all the Dceu movies will come to...

10 Unanswered Fringe Mysteries A Reboot Could Finally Answer
Image
Where to Watch Powered by A Fringe reboot could address lingering questions, like if Peter knew what happened to Walter after he entered a wormhole in the finale. The existence and exploration of other universes beyond the main and parallel ones could be a compelling plot for a potential reboot. The fate of the Cortexiphan kids, as well as the ulterior motives behind the trials, are topics that a reboot could delve into.

Fringe ended ten years ago in 2013, but some fans are still waiting for the day that Fox reboots the science fiction television series. The show, which earned a cult following during its release, premiered in 2008 and ran for five seasons before airing its series finale in January 2013. Fringe starred Anna Torv as Olivia Dunham, Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop, John Noble as Walter Bishop, Jasika Nicole as Astrid Farnsworth, Lance Reddick as Phillip Broyles, and Blair Brown as Nina Sharp.

Fringe Ending Explained: How The Timeline Changes & White Tulip Meaning
Image
Over a decade later, many audience members still need the Fringe ending explained in depth due to the show's complex nature. Created by J. J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, Fringe premiered in 2008 and originally utilized a largely episodic structure, with the "case of the week" format driving forward development between the core cast. Over time, however, Fringe became more serialized, increasingly delving into long-term mysteries and convoluted story arcs. By the time Fringe reached season 5, the episodic structure had all but vanished, replaced with one season-long struggle against the Observers.

Fortunately for viewers, Fringe went into its fifth and final season knowing that the end was nigh, and this allowed the series to deliver a proper conclusion. When discussion turns to TV endings that satisfied fans, Fringe is often unfairly overlooked. Despite the positive reception, however, the Fringe ending was predictably ambiguous, and the final implications on the Fringe cast remain debated today.

Fringe's Parallel Universe Already Set Up The Perfect Reboot
Image
Audiences can't seem to get enough of multiverse tales in TV and film, and the sci-fi cult hit, Fringe, whose parallel world storyline was a hallmark of the series, has great potential to set up the perfect reboot of the show. Airing from 2008 to 2013, Fringe centers on the work of the fictional Fringe Division of the FBI. Division members Agent Olivia Dunham, scientist Dr. Walter Bishop and Walter's estranged son Peter Bishop, a jack-of-all-trades routinely investigated bizarre cases revolving around fringe science subjects like mind control, teleportation, genetic mutation, invisibility and reanimation.

One of the major plot threads of Fringe was the discovery of a parallel universe that mostly mirrored our own, the one that the main characters inhabited, with some significant differences: The World Trade Center is still standing following the September 11 terrorist attacks and President John F. Kennedy survived his assassination. Since the idea of alternate universes was well established in the series,...

Why Did Fringe End With Season 5?
Image
Fringe is a sci-fi series created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci that premiered on Fox in 2008 and ended in 2013, after five seasons and 100 episodes. The series follows FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv), who teams up with a former mad scientist Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his estranged son Peter (Joshua Jackson) to investigate paranormal and unexplained occurrences.

Influenced by shows like The X-Files, Lost and Altered State, Fringe's first season initially received lukewarm reviews, but subsequent seasons were met with critical success, and the show received numerous awards and developed a passionate fan base. Unfortunately, these elements didn't guarantee Fringe's longevity, and the series was renewed for a final, shortened fifth season in late 2012. Let's look at what Fringe was and why the series ended after five seasons.

How Does Fringe End?
Image
After five seasons and 100 episodes, it was time for the hit sci-fi series Fringe to throw in the towel in 2013. Created by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Orci, Fringe premiered on Fox in 2008 and followed Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson) and his father Walter Bishop (John Noble) as they investigated paranormal and unexplained occurrences such as parallel worlds, time travel, precognition, and human experimentation.

Fringe initially received lukewarm reviews, not getting the same praise from critics as the early years of The X-Files, but the show took risks with its storytelling and tone that ultimately paid off. The show explored alternate dimensions and timelines before other cult hits like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made that par for the course. The idea allowed Fringe to develop into something new every season, and while most episodes contained standalone plots, they still connected to the show's carefully crafted mythology. That mythology came...

How a Busby Berkeley-Obsessed Indie Filmmaker Landed the Stage and Movie Rights to His Unpublished Memoir
Image
Bring up Golden Age Hollywood filmmaker Busby Berkeley, and most people conjure his staging of elaborate, kaleidoscopic dance numbers in such films as “Dames” and “Footlight Parade,” Ginger Rogers singing “We’re in the Money” at the height of the Depression in “Gold Diggers of 1933,” or his sinuous camera weaving through dancer’s legs in such hits as Oscar-nominated “42nd Street” (1933).

A three-time Oscar nominee (for Best Dance Direction), Berkeley’s musicals were credited with saving Warner Bros. from financial collapse before he became a key player in Arthur Freed’s unit at MGM, where he propelled the careers of numerous stars, including Rogers, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Gene Kelly. Behind the scenes, Berkeley’s life was darker and often tragic — beset by scandal and numerous brushes with the law.

Arguably, Berkeley’s Hollywood artist’s journey is the untold story that “Babylon” wasn’t — and it coincides...

Peter's Fringe Ending Copied Walter's Origin Story
Image
Peter's choices towards the end of Fringe copied Walter's original choices towards the beginning. Fringe is the story of Walter, Peter, and their friends coming to terms with the consequences of Walter's nearly world-ending actions. Walter's experiments many years before had created a hole in reality. The Fringe Unit was created to deal with the consequences of that breach. Olivia needs both Walter and Peter and facilitates their reunion. At first, their relationship is rocky, but they grow closer over time. Initially, Walter resents Peter for abandoning him in the mental hospital after his experiment killed someone. At first, Peter resents Walter for pretty much everything.

The main reason that Walter and Peter have so much friction is that Peter can never fully understand the reason why Walter has made the fringe choices, especially concerning Peter. Throughout Fringe, Peter realizes that he and Walter aren't all that much different. And...
