(Exclusive) “It’s very empowering”: Abby Trott Admits Nezuko’s Silence in ‘Demon Slayer’ Makes Her the Perfect Role Model
Image
Whether it’s about voicing video game or anime characters, Abby Trott ensures the spotlight is on her with her multifaceted roles. While sitting with her for an interview, alongside my colleague,@adya-godboley, I got the rare privilege to learn how passionate she is about her projects. She has been making waves across the internet for her overenergetic role as Momo Ayase in Dandadan.

However, do not be fooled because her other most acclaimed role is renowned for having the least amount of lines in a series. It’s none other than Nezuko Kamado. During the conversation, we came to an agreement that Nezuko’s silence is not a sign of weakness but of empowerment for young girls, and they see her as a role model.

(Exclusive) “I kind of put up an emotional block”: ‘Nier: Automata Ver1.1a’ Became Abby Trott’s Most Difficult Anime
Image
The dividing opinion of sub and dub can be quite a controversial one, but one thing that unifies the Otakus is how Abby Trott has carved out a legacy for herself. Recently, I got the opportunity to interview her with my colleague @adya-godboley, jumping with excitement as we hopped on a call with one of the greats of the voice acting industry.

As viewers, we have seen her carve out a legacy for herself by lending her voice to characters like Momo Ayase, Nezuko Kamado, and even in video games like Marvel Rivals. Though her job seems easy to us fans, she explains how she undergoes a difficult process to helm her role and how Nier: Automata Ver1.1a became her toughest project to work on.

Exclusive: ‘Dandadan’s Unconventional Approach to Romance Is Exactly What Saved Momo From Drowning in Her Own Show
Image
One of the best aspects of Dandadan is the main protagonists, Momo and Okarun, especially their natural chemistry. They act like realistic teenagers, but trust each other enough to communicate. Moreover, Dandadan avoids a traditional romance route you would expect from a Shonen series and rewrites the norm.

There isn’t a moment in Dandadan where Momo doesn’t shine. She’s often the hero rather than a damsel, even when she’s in danger. Abby Trott, her English voice actor, discusses this in an interview with FandomWire’s Adya Godboley and Tushar Auddy.

The treatment of Momo Ayase in the overall narrative of Dandadan is incredible. Not sidelining a character is a low bar to hit for a Shonen anime, but it’s unfortunately common when it comes to writing the women.

‘Dan Da Dan’ Season 2 Already Hinted at One of Its Biggest Villains and You Didn’t Even Notice
Image
Season 2 of DanDaDan premiered just a few days ago, and there's already a lot to unpack. Between Jiji's (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa in the original Japanese and by Aleks Le in the English dub) haunted house, Momo's (Shion Wakayama/Abby Trott) terrible experience in a hot spring, and Okarun's (Natsuki Hanae/A.J. Beckles) newfound rivalry, the debut episode came packed with new info — but one element might have flown past you. The premiere episode, titled "Like, This Is the Legend of the Giant Snake," included a reference to a major villain of the franchise. But fans who only watch the anime series probably didn't spot it.

The reason why the reference might have gone unnoticed by most fans is because it's related to a character wiho hasn't even been introduced yet. In the manga series created by Yukinobu Tatsu, one of the villains from the later arcs is someone called Count Saint-Germain,...

“That’s Really Cool”: ‘DanDaDan’ Co-Director Reveals Which Season 2 Episode Is His Favorite
Image
There are many things that DanDaDan fans want to see when the series returns for Season 2 later this week. First and foremost, they want to see Okarun (voiced by Natsuki Hanae in the original Japanese and by A.J. Beckles in the English dub), Momo (Shion Wakayama/Abby Trott), and Turbo Granny (Mayumi Tanaka/Barbara Goodson) again. Then, they want to find out what happened after the boy and the girl agreed to visit Jiji's (Kaito Ishikawa/Aleks Le) house to find out what's going on in the eerie place. Once episodes start rolling out, everyone will have their favorite moments, but series' co-director Abel Gongora has already revealed to Collider which episode of the season is his favorite.

During the interview, Gongora told Collider's Laura Adams that his favorite episode comes fairly early in the season: it's Episode 2, whose title is yet to be revealed. We do know, however,...

This 97% Rotten Tomatoes Anime Movie Just Earned a Spot on a Major Box Office List
Image
Last week, the box office numbers indicated that DanDaDan was close to a threshold. Now, with the compilation movie DanDaDan: Evil Eye debuting in more countries, the franchise has broken new records and continues to make history in domestic earnings. The new movie wrapped up the weekend with $5.5 million earned in the U.S., making it officially five times more profitable than the franchise's previous movie, DanDaDan: First Encounter.

With the new number, DanDaDan: Evil Eye also managed to fly past one of the highest-ratedMy Hero Academia movies. Last year, My Hero Academia: You're Next was able to make $5 million domestically, and now that DanDaDan: Evil Eye surpassed it, the franchise already ranks among the 25 highest-earning Japanese anime movies ever in the U.S. If it manages to bring in more than 6.8 million, DanDaDan will eliminate legendary titles like Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke from the list.

The number is...

New Season of the Global Hit Anime ‘Dandadan’ Is Coming to a Brand New Streaming Platform
Image
In less than two weeks, DanDaDan fans will get to dive into the highly anticipated Season 2 of the worldwide phenomenon. In order to do that, they will need to have a subscription to a streaming platform. The good news is, the anime series is not exclusive to any streaming service; there will be multiple options for fans to check out the new adventures, and all platforms will release episodes simultaneously with Japan. At this point, we already had confirmation that Netflix and Crunchyroll will once again debut episodes in their respective libraries. This week, Hulu joined the chorus and confirmed that it will be yet another option to stream DanDaDan when it returns.

Season 2 of DanDaDan comes highly anticipated. Last year, the anime series set a high bar for itself with its gorgeous art style and its entertaining mix of supernatural and sci-fi stories. With a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes...

'DanDaDan' Is About to Speed Past a 'My Hero Academia' Movie at the Domestic Box Office
Image
The DanDaDan team is certainly happy that they decided to make the Season 2 premiere a theatrical event. The compilation movie DanDaDan: Evil Eye is moving at full speed at the box office, and even if it doesn't rake in a blockbuster-level gross, the new title has already managed to shatter the records of its own franchise — and now it's aiming for other anime franchises: the movie is about to outperform one of My Hero Academia's best-rated theatrical releases.

With just one weekend, DanDaDan: Evil Eye managed to outperform the previous entry in the franchise, the debut compilation movie DanDaDan: First Encounter. Released last year, First Encounter amassed a little over $1 million at the box office, mostly because DanDaDan was relatively unknown at the time. Now, with two weeks in theaters, Evil Eye has already managed to make it past the $5.03 million gross in the U.S. The number is dangerously...

English dubs have always been a contentious topic for anime fans. Lately, though, fans have warmed up to the idea, all because of voice actors who give us quality dubs. You can always count on anime fans to show up in theaters to check out their favorite series. While fans eagerly await the new chapter, another Dan Da Dan production that everyone can’t stop talking about, appears to be doing as good as the original anime series. It's none other than Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye! The filmlanded in North America on Friday, June 6, and most recently, it has earned a laudable feat on Rotten Tomatoes, finding favor among the audience soon after its release.

“That’s a concern I have”: ‘Dandadan’ May Have Accidentally Driven Itself Into a Corner for Season 2
Image
Alright, let’s talk about Dandadan. You know, that one anime that kind of came out of nowhere, and completely blew everyone’s mind, and had people screaming “What Did I Just Watch, and why was it so awesome??” Yeah, that one. Dandadan Season 1 wasn’t just a hit, it was a freakin’ phenomenon. Aliens, ghosts, pervy spirits, psychics, teenage angst, and some of the most chaotic fight scenes ever animated? Yes, please!

It was like someone took all the genres, tossed them into a blender, hit turbo, and managed to produce some gourmet-grade storytelling. But the thing is: now that Season 1 was so much fun, everyone’s expecting Season 2 to be sky-high amazing, and that’s a bit of a problem. The anime may have just cornered itself. Not because it’s running out of story (the manga’s got plenty of madness left), but because it set the...

“It’s This Underlying Empathy”: ‘DanDaDan’ Star Teases an Emotional Showdown Between Okarun and Jiji in Season 2 [Exclusive]
Image
Ever since the finale of Season 1 and the discovery of a mysterious room full of talismans in Jiji's home, DanDaDan has been building up to an inevitable clash between the bespectacled occult fanatic Okarun and the demonic Evil Eye. All the teasers for Season 2 and the Evil Eye compilation movie have been setting the stage for the battle ahead, showing off Jiji's transformation to accommodate the yōkai and its immense power. It represents one of the series' greatest and most anticipated threats from the original manga yet, which will push Okarun, Momo, and Turbo Granny to their limits in their fight against the supernatural. Yet there's also a deeper, more personal layer connected to Jiji and Okarun's relationship and who these characters are that Okarun's English dub voice actor A.J. Beckles believes elevates the epic moment to another level.

“Mostly, It’s Serious”: ‘DanDaDan’ Stars Share How the Vibe Shifts Between Season 1 and the “Tense” Season 2 [Exclusive]
Image
DanDaDan is about to get serious. When the hotly anticipated sci-fi anime premiered last year, it introduced viewers to a frantic, goofy, mysterious, and action-packed story of two high school students discovering that ghosts and aliens are very real and using their newfound abilities to combat the strange and horrific supernatural entities around them. The stakes are higher in Season 2, though, as Momo (Abby Trott) and Okarun (Aj Beckles) face their greatest threats yet, including, most notably, the demonic Evil Eye, who pushes the pair to their limits. During a conversation with Collider's Laura Adams for the Evil Eye compilation movie, English dub stars Beckles, Trott, and Aleks Le opened up about how the new arc sends the series in a more intense direction that leaves behind a bit of the laughs for more serious storylines.

“We Needed To Be Careful”: ‘DanDaDan’ Co-Director Explains Why Jiji’s Transformation Is His Favorite Part of ‘Evil Eye’ [Exclusive]
Image
The 2024 breakout hit anime DanDaDan is officially back with the release of DanDaDan: Evil Eye in theaters this weekend. Made up of the first three episodes of Season 2, which premieres next month, the feature-length adventure pits high school students turned fighters of the supernatural, Momo Ayase (Abby Trott) and Ken "Okarun" Takakura (A.J. Beckles), against their most powerful foe yet — the demonic Evil Eye, a Yōkai that has possessed Momo's childhood friend Jiji (Aleks Le). His transformation to accommodate the imposing spirit is a chilling one, and it was easily one of co-director Abel Gongora's favorite moments he helped create. In an interview with Collider's Laura Adams, he shared why he loves the scene so much and what made it such a challenge to translate from manga to anime.

“That didn’t get any easier”: ‘Dandadan’ Star Still Couldn’t Get Over 1 Uncomfortable Scene in Episode 1
Image
Dandadan became a hit in 2024, and fans cannot wait for the release of its second season, especially after that ominous cliffhanger. The unique blend of horror, comedy, and a bit of romance makes it an excellent series to get into. It’s truly one-of-a-kind. However, it might not be easy for everyone to watch for one aspect.

Momo Ayase, the female protagonist of Dandadan, is often subjected s*xually harassment and is nearly assaulted by the antagonists. She’s been through enough close calls. Episode 1 itself depicted her being chased down and abducted by the Serponians, who then stripped and tied her down. The tools they wanted to use on her left little to the imagination.

This scene isn’t the last disturbing one Momo has been through. If it wasn’t easy for us to watch this playing out in Dandadan, it must’ve been even harder to act out.

“I thought that was really cool”: ‘Dandadan’ Opening Director Reflects on AI in the Anime Industry
Image
Almost everyone seems to be obsessed with generative AI these days, but only a few are brave enough to speak against its invasiveness in the art-based industries. Thankfully, the director of Dandadan’s season 1 opening is one of them. He has proved through his work that human art would always be superior to AI-generated ‘art.’

But why is the opening credits so unique and enrapturing? Is it only because of Creepy Nuts’ awesome music? Or is the animation one of a kind? In an interview, the director helped break down the sequence.

'Kids Can Be Cruel': Dandadan Star Reveals Biggest Similarity With Hit Shonen Jump Protagonist
Image
In Science Saru's hit supernatural comedy anime, Dandadan, Ken "Okarun" Takakura is introduced as a loner who his classmates often mock. For Okarun's English voice actor, Aj Beckles, this aspect of the character resonates with him on a personal level.

In a recent interview with Cbr, Beckles sat down with fellow Dandadan voice stars Abby Trott (Momo Ayase) and Aleks Le (Jiji) to discuss the series and their respective roles. Before Dandadan, Beckles also portrayed Tokyo Revengers lead Takemichi Hanagaki -- a character who fearlessly takes on one of Japan's most notorious gangs to save his girlfriend's life. While Okarun has a similarly valiant spirit, this is initially overshadowed by his status as the school outcast. Beckles stated that he was once in a similar social position when he was younger. "...I related a lot to where Okarun is when we first meet him, where I was like into a lot of nerdy things,...

'It's Not Supposed to Be Nice': Dandadan Star Opens Up on Momo’s Most 'Unsettling and Nerve-Wracking' Scenes
Image
Dandadan has been a major breakout anime hit, but it has not been without its controversies. In a recent interview, official Momo English dub voice actor Abby Trott cleared the air on how she interprets Momo’s most divisive scene from Dandadan’s first season.

Dandadan hit the ground running with Season 1 of the anime. It was consistently a highly rated series among both fans and critics, repeatedly featuring in Netflix’s top 10 throughout its run. However, many viewers resolved to drop the anime after a particularly chilling scene in the anime’s very first episode involving the series’ lead protagonist, Momo Ayase. As Momo’s English Dub actor, Abby Trott has a unique perspective and understanding of the character, and in a recent chat with Cbr alongside Aleks Le (Jiji) and Aj Beckles (Okarun), she explained her own take on that and similar scenes.

Episode 7 Being the Best of ‘Dandadan’ Wasn’t Just a Coincidence

Episode 7 of Dandadan is one of the best that the anime has to offer. The story of Acrobatic Silky, who was actually supposed to be a ruthless yokai, was shown. And as it turned out, she was once a human who had gone through the worst circumstances imaginable for anyone alive.

“It’s so hard to categorise this show”: Momo Va Abby Trott on Why ‘Dandadan’ Is More Than Just a Shonen Anime (Exclusive)
Image
Abby Trott has been a big name in the anime industry for quite some time now, and her work as Nezuko, Momo, and Magik has already made her a fan favorite, and I got to see that her personality is just as fun. My colleague @tushar-auddy and I recently interviewed Trott, asking her about everything from Dandadan and Demon Slayer to Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a.

The experience was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and learning the ins and outs of voice acting certainly was a plus point. While we both agreed that Momo was an exceptional protagonist, there was more to her character than what classified her as a typical Shonen hero. Trott has played some of the most diverse characters, yet it was Momo who she had the most fun voicing.

Abby Trott is just as passionate about Dandadan as any of the fans would be. During our interview, I came to realize, when interviewing her with @tushar-auddy, that she isn’t just an amazing voice actor but also an incredible conversationalist. Demon Slayer and Dandadan weren’t the only things we got to talk about, going from our shared love for late-night ramen to cosplaying.

The best part was getting to know the ins and outs of the voice acting industry. You hear them in video games and animated projects, but what goes on behind the scenes can only be conjecture. For someone as lively as Trott, Momo and Nezuko stood at two extremes – one who rarely talked and the other who talked her heart out.

Abby Trott can only handle so much screaming in one day

Playing the roles of Momo and Nezuko, she has established herself as one of the most prominent in the industry. Not only has she been a veteran of the anime industry, but she has also lent her voice to some of the most fascinating games, including Marvel Rivals.

I got the opportunity to interview her with my colleague @tushar-auddy, and without a doubt, our excitement was through the roof. We geared up in no time to get on a call with one of my favorites in the industry. It was wonderful talking to her about it since we got to ask her about some of our favorite shows and games, and understand the challenges that come with voicing characters that are so different from each other. While Nezuko...

“It’s not good for your vocal cords”: Voicing Nezuko Became a Bigger Challenge for ‘Demon Slayer’ Voice Actor Despite Her Minimal Lines
Image
Demon Slayer has several vibrant and passionate characters. Among them, Nezuko is one of the most popular characters despite almost being a demon. This lovely girl is voiced by Abby Trott, a talented voice actress who has been in multiple other roles.

Among her other roles, Trott’s most famous ones are probably Momo from Dandadan and Shizuka from Zom 100. She has also played Hikari in Neon Genesis Evangelion, Snorri in Vinland Saga, Machi in Hunter x Hunter, and more. But even amongst all of these, Nezuko stands out as a difficult role to play.

The voice actor of Nezuko from Demon Slayer explains why the role was challenging

Demon Slayer has plenty of characters who sure do like to talk a lot. Of course, the first who comes to mind is Zenitsu. His character is so lively and energetic that most people’s shouting voice is his normal range.

Nezuko Va’s 2 Most Favorite Demon Slayer Scenes Involve Lord Inosuke, King of the Mountains
Image
Nezuko is one of the most fan-favorite characters from Demon Slayer. Although the show mostly centers around her brother, the protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko, too, has won the fans’ hearts since the very first episode. Even though she is mostly silent in the series.

In fact, some of the fans’ most favorite sequences from the show feature her at the center stage. Interestingly, though, her English Va, Abby Trott, seems to be of a different mind. As it stands, her favorite moments from Demon Slayer actually feature the King of the Mountains, Lord Inosuke, stealing the spotlight from her.

'I Needed to Do the Homework': Dandadan Anime Star Reveals Her Research Into Playing Momo
Image
In the Dandadan anime, English-language voice actor Abby Trott portrays Momo Ayase -- a feisty teenage girl with psychic abilities who fearlessly stands up against supernatural and paranormal threats. Recently, Trott discussed how the role of Momo required a great deal of "homework" ahead of the first recording sessions.

During a one-on-one interview with Cbr, Trott compared her preparation for Momo to that of Nezuko from the Demon Slayer series. Prior to Dandadan, Nezuko was the first major character role that Trott gained significant praise for. "I've done a fair share of anime, but no character has been as recognizable or as beloved as Nezuko. She's everyone's precious little bean," Trott said. Unlike Momo, Nezuko is a part human, part demon character whose main form of communication comes in the form of non-verbal dialogue. However, Trott also felt that Momo had a unique level of "complexity" that necessitated an altogether different acting approach.

'She's Just Drawn to Him': Dandadan Anime Voice Actor Shares Her Favorite 'Mokarun' Scenes
Image
Last year, Science Saru's Dandadan anime introduced viewers to Momo Ayase and 'Okarun' -- two teenagers with oppositional personalities who form a powerful bond while teaming up against creepy aliens and eccentric apparations. Abby Trott, who voices Momo Ayase in the English dub, recently revealed which "Mokarun" moments are her absolute favorites so far.

During a lengthy interview with Cbr, Trott divulged what sets Dandadan apart from her other major series, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. In the latter anime, Trott portrays Nezuko, an adorable demon girl who mainly communicates by "growling or kicking." According to Trott, Momo is a much more "dynamic" role. Consequently, her behavior toward 'Okarun,' (A.J. Beckles) sometimes teeters between friendly and combative. For Trott, this part of Momo's character makes both her and her relationship with Okarun very interesting. "Momo is very outspoken. She speaks what's on her mind. Except when it comes to emotion,...
