6 Ways The Boys In The Boat Changes The True Story
Image
The Boys in the Boat film compressed the story's timeline to focus on the events leading up to the 1936 Olympics, cutting out three years of the University of Washington team's journey. The film left out a significant moment in Joe Rantz's life, where he was abandoned by his father and stepmother at a young age. The Berkeley coach did not donate money to the rowing team as depicted in the film but instead offered his support for their Olympic journey.

The Boys in the Boat is based on Daniel James Brown's 2013 book of the same name, which depicts the inspiring true story of the United States men's eight rowing team at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. However, director George Clooney and screenwriter Mark L. Smith had to make a handful of changes to the account of the events to dramatize the 2023 biographical sports drama film further (as is the...

As promised the onslaught of 2023 sports films marches, or in this case paddles, on. Hot on the heels of last week’s historical sports drama, comes this one based on a popular book from a few years ago. It’s not about wrestling, like Friday’s flick, but it is set in the past, though nearly fifty years before the Von Erichs. But there is an Olympic connection. This one concerns a larger team of young men defying the odds and overcoming hardship to go for the gold, rather than fame and fortune.

The Boys in the Boat Review: George Clooney’s Square-Peg Show of Patriotism
George Clooney
For a while it seemed like George Clooney was his generation’s heir apparent to Cary Grant, a bona fide movie star whose limited range is rendered irrelevant by his irrepressible charisma. And then he started directing films and, at least out of the gate things seemed momentarily more interesting. His 2002 directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, came on breezy but grounded, certainly the most approachable take on a Charlie Kaufman screenplay ever mounted. And 2005’s Good Night, and Good Luck, his tribute to the mandarin days of television news, was at least palpably committed to lionizing Eisenhower-era liberal resistance. In other words, he looked to become the heir apparent to Robert Redford, auteur.

It didn’t last. The title of Clooney’s The Monuments Men, just about sums it up. His obsession with what he perceives as the achievements and moral clarity of those (read: Americans) who lived...

New George Clooney Movie Fails To End His Dismal 12-Year Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
The Boys in the Boat received a Rotten score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes. This continues director George Clooney's streak of low scores for his directorial features. Clooney's last Fresh score was in 2011 for The Ides of March.

The Boys in the Boat continues a grim Rotten Tomatoes streak for director George Clooney. The new movie is based on the 2013 nonfiction book of the same name by Daniel James Brown, about a crew of University of Washington rowers who competed in the Summer Olympics in 1936. The movie stars Callum Turner as working-class rower Joe Rantz and Joel Edgerton as coach Al Ulbrickson, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Jack Mulhern, Sam Strike, Alec Newman, Peter Guinness, and Luke Slattery.

Rotten Tomatoes has aggregated the first reviews for the The Boys in the Boat movie a week and a half ahead of its official release date. Out of 24 reviews, the...

The Boys In The Boat Review: George Clooney's Sports Drama Is Standard-Issue
Image
If George Clooney weren't such a charismatic actor, his milquetoast directing might not inspire such derision. It's been well over a decade since he sunk his teeth into a meaty part, yet his ambitions on the other side of the camera have ranged from passable to terrible. "The Boys in the Boat" ranks in the upper echelon of Clooney's directorial efforts, if only because that's a rather low bar.

This is sturdy, simple studio filmmaking at its least offensive. Clooney executes a familiar underdog sports narrative with technical competence and some measure of engaging action. It's aiming for less than his last foray into period athletics, 2008's "Leatherheads," which also tried to shoehorn in screwball comedy elements alongside football competition. But "The Boys in the Boat" achieves more by using a more vibrant palette to color within predictable lines.

‘The Boys in the Boat’ Review: Joel Edgerton in George Clooney’s Tribute to Old-Fashioned Can-Do Spirit
Image
The scrappy ragtag team, the gruff but kind coach, the against-the-odds triumph — sports dramas rarely veer far from a basic template. It’s no surprise when the story’s athletes accomplish their unlikely goal; it’s how the director leads us there that matters. In the case of The Boys in the Boat, a telling of true events that can feel overly cautious in its admiring distance, the surprises lie in small moments and grace notes.

At the helm for his ninth feature, George Clooney follows the intimate coming-of-age tale The Tender Bar with a return to the realm of history. He puts a subdued spin on the story of unlikely Olympians — and generally avoids the stodginess of The Monuments Men. The University of Washington Huskies were working-class college kids in the depths of the Great Depression who became contenders in the rarefied realm of competitive rowing, going all the...

‘The Boys In The Boat’ Review: George Clooney Directs Winning Story Of 1936 U Of Washington Rowing Team That Shocked The World And Hitler At 1936 Olympics
Image
Hollywood is full of inspiring sports-themed movies, especially those focused on underdogs who rise to the occasion. But films about rowing teams are few and far between — until now. Director George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat is a gorgeous adaptation of the Depression-era story of a group of poor but scrappy young men who find a slice of glory when they become the USA’s choice to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is, to use a well worn cliché, a stand-up-and-cheer tale if ever there was one.

But the primary reason to cheer is the kind of unspoken underlying message within, that this is a sport where it is imperative that everyone in the boat rows as one, in unison and together physically and psychologically. This makes The Boys in the Boat not just enormously entertaining, but also important and relevant to our current world that is more divided,...
