Lyn and a guest have been summoned to Staufen House by the estimable Dr. Justus Frost. I’m not sure if that sounds more ominous or pretentious, but either way Lyn and her guest, boyfriend Elijah are on their way to the doctor’s retreat.
Joining them for the weekend are Tara, a famous and full of herself media personality, and Joe an entrepreneur specializing in self-help programs. They have a messy divorce in common, his fourth no less.
Writer Yuri Baranovsky and director Mark Meir lay on the tropes right from The Summoned’s opening scenes. A cryptic prologue, a creepy encounter on the drive to the retreat, undercurrents of trouble between Lyn and Elijah, etc. And, as you might expect, he also turns out to be the only...

Things are always going to get slightly messy on a couple’s self-help retreat – secrets, deception and resentment are just some of things that are bound to be brought up. Some people may attend and lose a marriage, but no one expects to lose their life, unless you attend the self-help retreat depicted in The Summoned.
Elijah (J. Quinton Johnson) – a struggling musician turned mechanic – and his girlfriend Lyn (Emma Fitzpatrick) – a rock star working on her third album – are ‘summoned’ to an exclusive and secretive self-help retreat at the Staufen House. Elijah seems cautious about the clandestine invitation, but tries to get into the spirit of the retreat. He even remarks that the pair are there to ‘work on some of our stuff.’ Once at the retreat they meet two other guests, entrepreneur Joe (Salvador Chacon) and actress Tara (Angela Gulner), who are both going through a divorce – from each other.

American folklore (and folk music) is full of stories about men who wagered with the Devil. Some of them got away with it. Of course, we never find out whether or not the Devil came back later for revenge. The trope is actually older than Christianity, and has its roots in the idea that whilst anybody might enjoy success, only a special kind of person avoids paying a price for it.
Elijah (J Quinton Johnson) is not, in his own terms, successful. According to his girlfriend Lyn (Emma Fitzpatrick), he’s a capable songwriter, and he demonstrates that he can also sing, but he’s modest about it and enjoys his job as a mechanic. He seems to find comfort in the idea of being ordinary, but at the Staufen House, he’s the odd one out. That’s because this exclusive therapy resort – which Lyn has brought him to as her plus one.

"We are baptized in shame, and in shame we live." And shame we must break free from! XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for The Summoned, an indie horror thriller that's landing on VOD in July. This recently premiered at the 2022 Overlook Film Festival this month, a good horror festival to show a film like this. It's described as a "Faustian morality tale" from a script by Jewish-Ukrainian writer Yuri Baranovsky. Elijah attends a self-help retreat with his rockstar girlfriend Lyn, unaware that the enigmatic doctor, Dr. Frost played by Frederick Stuart, who runs the estate has summoned him here to settle a generations-old supernatural debt. The film stars J. Quinton Johnson as Elijah, with Emma Fitzpatrick, Salvador Chacon, Angela Gulner, and Freddy Douglas. This looks like it has some good thrills and chills, better than your average indie horror. That between-the-legs axe shot is the best shot from the trailer.

As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently eight productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Choir Boy” (opens January 8; closes March 10)
In this new play by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, the story centers on the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which for a half a century has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?...

When Choir Boy, the coming of age story from Tarell Alvin McCraney that predates his Oscar-winning, co-written screenplay for Moonlight, finds its sweet spots – and they are many – the drama, the humor and the music take off for parts unknown. This is a play that, like its unstoppable main character, never quits reaching for the high note, even when perfection is beyond its grasp.
Set in a prestigious prep school for African American boys, Choir Boy – a Manhattan Theatre Club production opening tonight at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre – grapples with questions of pride and shame, sexual identity, legacies and duty. Memorably performed (particularly by its young star Jeremy Pope), its frequent choir songs beautifully sung by the entire cast, the production is another fine addition to director Trip Cullman’s resume (his Lobby Hero was one of Broadway’s 2018 bests).
Still, Choir Boy shouldn’t be oversold, a temptation...

This is the Pure Movies review of Last Flag Flying, directed by Richard Linklater and starring Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, Steve Carell, J. Quinton Johnson, Deanna Reed-Foster and Yul Vazquez. Leaving behind the trials and tribulations of youth to take a look at life on the other side of the hill, Richard Linklater cuts an older and more contemplative figure in his latest. Much like the wrinkles lining the faces of our trio of leads, the ravages of time echo throughout the film and lend an understated note of melancholy to every exchange, every scenario, even every relationship. The plot begins when Doc enters the bar of ‘Nam buddy Sal, but the story proper begins long before that. As we spend time with this erstwhile band of brothers we get to know more and more about their shared past - particularly the parts they’d rather forget - and we...

Steve Carell gives a sensitive performance as a grieving Vietnam vet father on a road trip to bury his son killed in Iraq, accompanied by his two Vietnam War buddies, played by Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne, in Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying.
Set in 2003, the film combines elements of a road trip buddy movie and a reflection on two wars and soldiers shared experiences. In Vietnam, quiet Larry Shepherd (Steve Carell), who the others call Doc, was a Navy Corps medic while the more boisterous Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) and Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne) were Marines in the same unit. When Doc’s son, who joined the Marines, is killed in Iraq, the father is left alone in the...

Over the years, no one has quite captured the feeling of just spending time with friends on the big screen like Richard Linklater has. It’s an amazing skill for which he doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves. Yes, he’s feted often and this skill is mentioned, but to be able to do it like he does is really something. This week, and today, actually, audiences can see Linklater once again chronicle individuals just spending time with each other, as Last Flag Flying is being released. This is a terrific movie, among the best of the year. Linklater has done it again. He’s on quite the run lately, between this, Everybody Wants Some, and of course, Boyhood. Once more, a description for those of you not aware what this one is about. The film is a sequel of sorts to The Last Detail, though familiarity with that picture is hardly required.

Richard Linklater was nominated for an Oscar for exploring Boyhood in 2014, examined young adulthood last year in Everybody Wants Some!! and now, with Last Flag Flying, has focused on the subject of brotherhood.

Quinton Johnson, who also appeared in Everybody Wants Some!!, told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s premiere Wednesday night at the Directors Guild of America Theater in Los Angeles. “There’s something to the brotherhood specifically formed with military veterans that is a bit more powerful than the cynicism of politics and war. Who better than Richard Linklater to craft a movie about people talking – and in doing so, revealing the quirks and flaws that make them human? Whether it's Boyhood or the "Before" trilogy, the Texas-based writer-director and indie-film figurehead is always alert to the moments when people drop their public faces and reveal the emotional bruises underneath.

Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying opens this year’s New York Film Festival with a seriocomic drama about friendship in the midst of a topical treatment of the consequences and effects of war. With a script by Linklater and author Darryl Ponicsan, Last Flag Flying bridges the gap between Vietnam and Iraq, attempting to highlight the humor, pathos, and universality in soldiers’ experiences, in war and out of it.
The film opens in November 2003 with Larry “Doc” Shepherd (Steve Carell) visiting his Vietnam War buddy Sal Nealon (Bryan Cranston) at a dive bar that Sal runs in Norfolk, Virginia. After a night of boozy reminiscences, they take a quick trip upstate to see Reverend Richard Mueller (Laurence Fishburne), another old war buddy who’s reformed himself, gotten married, and become a pastor of a small church.

This morning, audiences at the 2017 New York Film Festival were the first to see Richard Linklater’s latest outing, the road trip dramedy Last Flag Flying. It’s the Opening Night Selection of the fest, officially kicking it off. Luckily for all of us in attendance, it’s also a terrific work, signaling not just another Academy Award contender, but another great film for the year. Plus, it honors the legacy of the flick that came before it (more on that in a moment). Amazon Studios continues to pick excellent bits of cinema to promote. This could very well end up just as successful as Manchester by the Sea was for them last year. The film is a sequel to The Last Detail, though familiarity with that picture is hardly required. Out of contact with each other for three decades, a trio of the Vietnam War veterans are brought back together.

How would the veterans of Richard Linklater's war movie Last Flag Flying vote in the last presidential election?
After a press screening at the New York Film Festival on Thursday, the director explained that the characters of the 2003-set film are somewhat politically ambiguous. He surmised with his actors that Laurence Fishburne's character, Mueller, wouldn't have voted for Donald Trump, but Bryan Cranston's Crazy Sal "probably would've voted for Trump as an 'eff you.'"
Added Fishburne in agreement, "You definitely voted for Trump!"

Nobody does sequels better than Richard Linklater, as his “Before” trilogy proved over three brilliantly chatty movies. However, “Last Flag Flying” represents a fresh challenge: It’s the unofficial sequel to a 44-year-old movie, picking up the threads of a story that predates Linklater’s career by more than decade. The result is an understated drama so measured that its surface-level plot about a grief-stricken man and his old war buddies might easily be mistaken for half-baked sentimentalism. However, “Last Flag Flying” succeeds in following the aging Vietnam vets of Hal Ashby’s 1973 “The Last Detail” by sharing the same critical tone, connecting Ashby’s countercultural rage to Linklater’s introspection.
Where Robert Towne and Darryl Ponicsan adapted “The Last Detail” from Ponicsan’s 1970 novel, Linklater and Ponicsan do likewise with “Last Flag Flying,” which Ponicsan published in 2005. Without reaching the philosophically profound heights of “Boyhood” or the ruminative comedy of “Everybody Wants Some!

Few filmmakers capture people hanging out quite like Richard Linklater, who has so many features revolving around convivial moments that it would be easier to list the films without them. As early as the rambling chance encounters of his breakthrough, Slacker to the recent drug-and-booze-fueled amateur philosophizing in Everybody Wants Some!!, Linklater has remarkable eyes and ears for elevating digressions that many other artists would treat as trivial into invaluable character- and world-building moments without sacrificing their inherently relaxed mood. It is appropriate, then, that the best parts of Last Flag Flying, a loose sequel to Hal Ashby’s The Last Detail, are those centering on casual conversation organically unfolding between the leads, chatter that often intensifies into poignant drama or devolves into genuine hilarity, photographed in simple-yet-striking shot-reverse-shot and two-shot configurations. What’s troublesome is that Linklater relies too heavily on these setups as his primary source of connection to the main trio,...

Earlier today, a Trailer dropped for Richard Linklater’s upcoming pseudo sequel to The Last Detail. It’s called Last Flag Flying and is set to open the New York Film Festival this year. Until now, it’s been purely based on speculation that this movie could be a good one. Well, now that I’ve seen the Trailer, I feel confident in saying this should be in contention during the season. You’ll be able to scope it out later, but right now, we should discuss the flick a bit first. There will obviously be more to come around Nyff time, though that shouldn’t stop us from getting a head start now, should it? From the looks of it, the film is going to be at least partly a road trip, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. Back when the Nyff press release hit,...

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie,...

The original Dirty Dancing is a favorite movie to women of all ages. The magic of the film was created by the music, the spark between Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, and of course, the dancing. It was a movie we watched when we were young, fantasizing about growing up and falling in love, and we watch it now that we're grown and remember our first loves and those magic summers of our youth.
Remaking a movie so iconic is a big risk, so I watched this ABC remake with a grain of salt. I knew it wouldn't be the Dirty Dancing of my youth, but I wanted to see what it had to offer. Here's the lowdown.
The cast: Abigail Breslin (Signs, Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as Baby Houseman was a perfect fit. She's cute and youthful. She played the naive and inexperienced, yet intelligent Baby really well.

Nobody should make a Dirty Dancing reboot…
But if you're going to, do it right.
Before you read any further, know that I really did try to give ABC's musical adaptation a chance, I did. There have been plenty of remakes of classical hits over the past few years -- some which were not so great, but others, like Grease: Live, that were wonderfully done and satisfied almost all of the viewers who tuned in. Of course, whenever you hear the news that one of your favorite movies of All Time is going to be remade, there's that moment of excitement -- "Yes! I am pumped for this!" -- followed by fear -- "Wait, what if this goes terribly wrong?"

So after hearing who would take on the beloved roles of Patrick Swayze's Johnny Castle (newcomer Colt Prattes) and Jennifer Grey's Baby Houseman (Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin), I told...

It might have something to do with how much I love Everybody Wants Some, but I’m still thinking about Richard Linklater and his career to date. Yes, I touched on that a bit last week, and previously in 2014 when Boyhood was making its way through the awards season, but I’m not quite done just yet. There’s something about Linklater that has me constantly thinking about and re-evaluating his films. Interestingly enough, his flicks tend to be ones that lend themselves nicely to introspection/retrospection. In doing this, one of the things I’ve actually come up with is that he’s actually yet to make a bad movie, despite having a nearly 20 deep filmography. As such, it made perfect sense to rank his films today, showing you just how varied yet consistent he is as a director. It’s really quite something to behold, at least in my eyes…...

Here’s your first look at the new trailer and posters for Richard Linklater’s college-theme movie Everybody Wants Some. This follow-up film arrives more than 20 years after the original and is the “spiritual sequel” to Dazed And Confused.
The movie will make its World Premiere on Friday, March 11, 2016 during the 23rd edition of the SXSW Film Festival.
Linklater says of his new film, “If you look at Mitch, Wiley Wiggins’s character in Dazed who pitches in that pony league game, this is him, four years later, going off to college. Say he got better at baseball and he’s off to college. It would be right then — 1980.” He adds, “I’m reclaiming songs like ‘Rapper’s Delight’ and ‘My Sharona’ – you know, songs from ’79 and’80 that people have been making fun of for a while. I’m back to the original intent of those songs, like what they felt like then.
