Stephen Colbert was struggling to get through the opening line of his telecast on Thursday, announcing that his turn behind the desk of The Late Show was coming to an end, as well as the fact that CBS was ignominiously axing its storied late-night franchise altogether.
His wife, Evie Colbert, who was watching the taping, was visibly emotional, according to audience members, a group that erupted into boos as the comedian revealed the news that left the fans of his show, the 200 people that work on it and the wider late-night community in a state of shock.
Colbert was told of the cancelation on Wednesday and informed his staff ahead of the taping.
It was a stunning reversal from May when George Cheeks, Co-CEO Paramount Global and President and Chief Executive Officer of CBS, told Deadline that he “really likes our hand” at 11:30pm. Cheeks, who came up in...

A year later, Tom Brady is still trying to live down his roast and its adverse effect on his family.
Reflecting on Netflix‘s The Greatest Roast of All Time, the 7x Super Bowl champ said he doesn’t want to see his “kids hurt” the way they did after hearing some of the jokes on the live-streamed event.
“When you were in that moment, in that theater that night at the Forum, it was electric. It was crazy. We got done, everybody was on cloud nine. That moment, I’ll never forget. And then I’ll never forget when I talked to my kids the next day,” he said on the Impaulsive podcast. “I felt like a stake through the heart.”
Brady noted that he was fine with the jokes that took a shot at him, but he wasn’t as prepared for those at the expense of ex-wife Gisele Bündchen and their children.

Exclusive: Saturday Night Live cast member Devon Walker today announced the launch of My Favorite Lyrics, a new music-themed comedy podcast that will premiere on Tuesday, April 29, with SNL scribe Alex English as its first guest. He also unveiled a first trailer, which you can check out above.
Each week on My Favorite Lyrics, Devon will invite people he thinks are cool to talk about the music that shaped them and the lyrics they can’t get out of their heads. Whether they’re iconic, idiotic, or accidentally profound, no bar is safe. From deep cuts to guilty pleasures, each guest peels back the layers of the songs that left a mark on them — for better or worse.
“God knows we don’t need another podcast from a comedian,” Walker admitted, “but I came to this idea via something I love: rappers saying some of the silliest sentences you’ve ever heard.

Scrubs snagged some thoroughly impressive guest stars, and while Matthew Perry's role as Murray Marks was one of the most memorable, it's even better when the other castings in his episode are considered. Although best known for appearing in all 10 seasons of Friends, Perry also played other great characters who weren't Chandler Bing. Even though none of his other personas were quite as iconic as his wise-cracking sitcom persona, Perry was always proving he was far more than a one-trick pony. His brilliant Scrubs performance would have stood out on its own, but the medical sitcom improved it further.
A legend of the sitcom genre, Matthew Perry was no stranger to the occasional guest spot on other comedy shows. For instance, Perry even reunited with fellow Friends alum Courtney Cox in Cougar Town, with the pair engaging in a pseudo-romance arc. The installment wouldn't have been quite so good...

The Tom Brady roast was one for the ages! A couple of months ago, Netflix hosted The Greatest Roast of All Time: The Roast of Tom Brady, which featured a bunch of associates and comedians who are well-wishers of the former NFL superstar. These roasts are notorious for the highly offensive jokes their dais tends to deliver, but they never fail to entertain the fans.

Netflix delivered quite the comedic lineup for the roasting of legendary quarterback Tom Brady. While some performers thrived on the big stage under the bright lights, others struggled to light the kindling of comedy.
As expected, the seasoned professionals sparkled with clever bits. Nikki Glaser torched two sports legends in a single quip that showcased her keen timing and wit. Sam Jay proved consistently hilarious as well, with tight punchlines aimed squarely at the roastee. Their polished sets set a high bar for the evening.
However, not all who took the mic possessed equal skills. A few athletes turned roasters talked too long without truly engaging the audience. Their comedy appeared rushed and unpracticed, more fitting of their day jobs on the gridiron than going toe to toe with pros.
Still, no one can fault them for braving the roast experience, even if some punches fell flatter than hoped. The...

Nikki Glaser ripped on Ben Affleck for bombing at Netflix’s Tom Brady roast, telling Barstool Sports’ “KFC Radio” podcast that it was abundantly clear the Oscar winner came unprepared to the live taping. Affleck was one of the event’s surprise roasters.
“I haven’t watched it again, like how it looked, because I don’t like to watch people bomb,” Glaser said of Affleck’s roast set. “He didn’t prepare. He’s someone who’s famous enough he probably thinks it’s beneath him to do this. Like, ‘I’m just gonna do a favor, it’s not gonna be that big of a deal.’ And then you do it and you go, ‘Oh! After knocking her set out of the park at last week’s roast of Tom Brady, comedian Nikki Glaser has been discussing the controversial live TV event, including new regrets from the former New England Patriots quarterback to the live ribbing marathon, and how she received a note from Kim Kardashian calling the experience a form of “abuse.”
Following the May 6 roast of The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, Brady said on The Pivot Podcast that he enjoyed when comedians took humorous jabs about nearly all aspects of his life but that he didn’t care for the jabs aimed at his family, adding that the comments impacted his children, “the people [he] care[s] about most in the world.”
“I feel like maybe he didn’t consider the backlash from his family and how it would affect them, and I do understand that,” Glaser said on Wednesday’s Today with Hoda and Jenna.

Tom Brady’s first roast will likely be his last.
During an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast,” the retired quarterback revealed that some of the jokes made during his recent Netflix roast poorly affected his children and that he wouldn’t sign up to do it again. While he didn’t specify the jokes in question, many of the comedians who took the stage targeted his high-profile marriage and divorce to Gisele Bündchen, with whom he has two kids. (Brady also has a third child with Bridget Moynahan.)

Tom Brady survived through his scorching Netflix roast, heralded as a major win for comedy.
The NFL legend was a good sport throughout the event, while comedians, including Nikki Glaser, Jeff Ross, and Tony Hinchcliffe, took a flamethrower to his personal life and career through the brilliance of comedic insults.
Some moments hit harder than any sack Brady likely experienced on the football field, and one instance featured Brady seemingly scolding a comedian about a joke that may have crossed the line.
And while the seven-time Super Bowl champion seemed to roll with the punches and even deliver a few of his own, he recently explained why he regretted his decision.
Speaking on his experience with the roast, Brady indicated he “loved” many of the jokes focused on him.
Despite the fun and laughs entertaining a massive live audience and many Netflix viewers, the retired NFL star revealed why he wouldn’t endure it again.

Tom Brady appeared on “The Pivot Podcast” and admitted that some of the jokes made during his Netflix roast affected his children and he would not sign up to be roasted again as a result. The NFL icon has three children, one son with Bridget Moynahan and a son and a daughter with ex-wife Gisele Bündchen. While Brady did not specify which jokes upset his children during the Netflix roast, many of the comedians present took aim at his marriage and divorce to Bündchen.

Bert Kreischer made a joke involving his bag of nicotine patches during The Tom Brady Roast. Then it morphed into an accusation about cocaine, he told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday, taking things into dangerous territory.
Kreischer had nicotine patches in a can in his pocket, but he was informed by the director of the roast that they were too distracting. “So I said, ‘Okay, and I put them in a little bag,'” he said. But that led ridicule by comedian Sam Jay.
“She started calling me a fake party animal, that I don’t even do drugs, I’m not even dead like the best ones.”
He continued, “So, I went into my pocket and pulled out my nicotine patches and I just wiggled them.”
Comedian Andrew Schulz chimed in. “Schulz goes, ‘You got a bag of blow on you?’ And the camera’s on me in the Forum and the Forum goes nuts,...

17,000 fans. The reunion of an American football dynasty and the coach no one expected to show. Televised live around the world while the reputation of a man considered “the greatest of all time” sits in the hands of savage comedians and one-time foes. What could go wrong?
But here we are, just days after Tom Brady took to the stage at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles for Sunday’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time,” and the walls are still standing. For decades roast comedy has been a beloved national tradition, once shepherded on TV by Comedy Central. It was a show that often targeted Hollywood legends or zeitgeist icons. It took the willingness of Brady, who holds a record 7 Super Bowl rings, to reinvigorate the format for streaming under host Kevin Hart. And not just any roast, which would typically be shot on a Hollywood backlot and edited ahead of its premiere.

But Glaser didn’t get to deliver every punchline she intended to during the live comedy event. During a post-roast interview on “The Howard Stern Show,” Glaser rattled off some of the Brady jokes she cut from her set.
“Tom, I love your work — that you’ve done on your face,” read one of Glaser’s cut jokes about Brady’s alleged plastic surgery. “Seriously, slow down. What is happening with your cheeks? You look like a Ken doll that was microwaved. You love deflating things, so stop.”
Glaser also cut a joke about Cte (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), a progressive degenerative disease caused by repeated concussions that affects many NFL players.

Tom Brady agreed to be roasted in Netflix’s The Greatest Roast of All Time, but one particular joke seemingly went too far for the future NFL Hall of Famer.

Writers from late-night shows including Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show and The Late Show among others are heading to the Primetime Emmys after the Television Academy performed a U-turn on its decision to exclude a key writing category from the main awards.
The TV Academy, Fox and the WGA have reached an agreement to include the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category, which also includes nominees Late Night with Seth Meyers and Saturday Night Live, during the live telecast.
The TV Academy, which runs the Emmys, set to air on Fox on January 15, had previously stated that the award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series was set to be handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys, rather than during the Primetime show.
It had been replaced by Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in November.

It’s been a strange year for late-night and things are only going to get weirder.
All of the late-night shows were dark between May and October as as a result of the writers strike and the genre lost one of its longer-running shows as The Late Late Show, which has run for over 5,000 episodes since 1995, is to be replaced by an old Comedy Central game show.
The change hasn’t been quite as significant as last year when James Corden and Trevor Noah revealed they’d be stepping down, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new regime killed Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal and Desus & Mero, who, for some, were the duo to reinvigorate the field, broke up.
Late-night, it seems, is just ticking along.
