Couples define the romance animes they're in. Without a great couple, the series itself really doesn't matter. The best couples in romance anime add everything to their series, allowing worlds to be built around them and characters to shine through their interactions. The best part about couples in romance anime is the freedom they're given to be themselves. No two couples are identical, giving plenty of room for couples with unique dynamics, fun characteristics, and interesting relationships.
While each couple can have different ways they express themselves within their relationships, there is one key trait that a couple needs to be one of the best in romance anime. They need to have good chemistry with each other, and it can be shown in a lot of different ways. Anime transformations are a staple of the genre. They're one of the best ways of signaling that a character has undergone a physical, mental, or spiritual transformation, telling the audience that a whole new version of them is set to hit the scene. Some of the best transformations are power-ups, giving a character the strength they need to take down an otherwise unbeatable enemy. While there has been hundreds of anime transformations over the years, only some of them are good enough to change the entire industry.
Some series, like Dragon Ball Z, are known for their transformations. Dbz has dozens of different forms and power boosts, but that doesn't necessarily make them good enough to change the industry at large. Only a few transformations in anime are so powerful that they've changed the way people look at transformations as a whole.

Crunchyroll reportedly pressed the brakes on promoting Science Saru's Dandadan, based on the Shonen Jump manga of the same name, which nonetheless went on to become one of the biggest anime series of 2024 for both fans and critics.
Cecilia D'Anastasio and Takashi Mochizuki's new report at Bloomberg gave major insight into the testimonies of 18 current and former Crunchyroll staff, revealing tensions between Crunchyroll and Funimation employees, disillusionment with management, layoff concerns, struggling ability to compete with other licensees, and tense relationships with licensors like Toei Animation, Shogakukan, Shueisha and Kodansha. Notably, for Dandadan fans, this tense relationship extends to one of Dandadan's licensors and production companies, Toho. Despite being one of the year's most anticipated titles, new testimony reveals that Crunchyroll's senior vice president, Markus Gerdemann, reportedly explicitly instructed staff to hold back on Dandadan's promotion.

Love stories are foundational to anime, which is why it's no surprise that the best romance anime are also some of the best anime period. Whether it be understated and adult or loud and juvenile, romance anime are endlessly compelling and have a massive fan base for good reason. Even fans of straight-up action shonen series might want to give romance anime a try given how many solid series there are.
One advantage romance anime have over their more action-oriented counterparts is that a focus on characters is an absolute requirement. While a sci-fi or fantasy series might be able to get away with a forgettable cast of characters, a love story needs to pay extra attention to its characters or else the story will fall apart. It's this focus on characters connecting and growing together that end up defining the very best romance anime series.

In their adventures, anime characters rely on many extraordinary abilities to come out on top during their trials and tribulations. Some hone their combat skills, others rely on supernatural abilities and divine powers, while the more cunning heroes use intelligence to outwit their opponents. However, there’s one factor that, if it is on the character’s side, can be mightier than any other ability or skill - luck.
Those favored by fortune can easily succeed against impossible odds, survive in the most dire life-or-death situations, and triumph when the whole world turns on them. In most cases, luck is an unquantifiable and fickle force one can’t reliably bargain on. Yet, some anime characters are blessed with such outstanding good fortune that it can almost be considered a superpower - and, sometimes, it actually is. Premium Bandai has announced the release of a very fashionable collaboration with the creators of the famous Ma-1 bomber jacket. Themed after the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury anime series, these jackets ensure that Suletta and Miorine can pilot their mobile suits in style.
Anyone following fashion trends over the past few years will have almost certainly witnessed the explosion of popularity of the bomber jacket -- specifically, the Ma-1 manufactured by Alpha Industries. What started as a tough and warm piece of clothing designed for U.S. Air Force pilots has woven itself into popular culture and counterculture for the past 70 years, at times even used as a subtle nod to queerness in certain spaces. The design also inspired creatives such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and Helmut Lang, but it has more recently become a sartorial closet staple.

Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Related: Why Did It Take Me So Long to Watch Buddy Daddies? Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. This October, I have been overly spooked by all the anticipation for Halloween.

Few anime subgenres are as distinctively niche as harem anime, where seemingly everyone is in love with the show's protagonist. Traditionally, this has been a young man surrounded by beautiful women, as in Tenchi Muyo!, but "reverse harems" like Ouran High School Host Club are some of the most popular examples of the subgenre.
While harem anime isn't for everyone, many shows transcend the limitations associated with this subgenre. It's possible to tell a complex, funny love story without relying on sexist tropes. The best harem series have plenty to offer their fans.
