Rob Lowe Returns to Filming in Los Angeles With ‘The Musical’ Opposite Gillian Jacobs and Will Brill
Rob Lowe, who went viral in March for a fiery take on the challenges of shooting projects in Los Angeles, has returned to the city to shoot an independent film titled The Musical.
The beloved performer will star opposite Gillian Jacobs and Tony Award winner Will Brill in the dark comedy for director Giselle Bonilla and writer Alexander Heller. Filming is underway in Los Angeles, which is hoping for an uptick in local productions thanks to tax incentives, particularly for independent features, as previously reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The Musical casts Brill as a frustrated playwright and middle school theater teacher who finds out that his ex-girlfriend (Jacobs) has started dating his nemesis, the school’s principal (Lowe). As a result, he hatches a plan to ruin the principal’s chances of winning the blue ribbon of academic excellence by secretly producing the most inappropriate musical imaginable. The story...

TV can seem fickle at times, particularly in the streaming era. One moment, you're binge-watching your new favorite show, and the next, it's gone. Plenty of shows have been canceled before their time was up, but knowing that this form of entertainment is a business and these decisions are made with business in mind never makes the pill any easier to swallow. Case in point, those who enjoyed Rob Lowe's "Unstable" on Netflix are surely not happy to know that season 3 isn't happening.
"Unstable" centers on universally admired eccentric biotech entrepreneur Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), and season 2 sees him lay out a series of challenges and mind games for his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) to see if he can become the heir to the Dragon empire. Lowe co-created and co-starred in the show alongside his real-life son, adding a meta layer of reality to the whole thing. The...

Chris Pratt will be executive producing a new dark comedy series in development at Amazon from the creator of the Netflix series Unstable. Some of Pratt's best movies and TV shows have fallen into the realm of comedy, including the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and his time on Parks and Recreation. The actor has a decorated career that spans beyond these projects, too, including his role in Netflix's The Electric State adaptation, and his upcoming role in the sci-fi thriller Mercy.
However, Deadlinereports that Pratt will be going behind-the-scenes as an executive producer for God's Country, a dark comedy being developed by Amazon MGM Studios. Created by John Owen Lowe, best known for the Netflix comedy Unstable, God's Country follows a family described as having "Shakespearean roots," whose real estate mogul patriarch sets about gentrifying "the heart of America." But a small town's past threatens him and his family's endeavors.

Although 9-1-1: Lone Star has answered its last call, Rob Lowe is ready to get back in the field as Captain Owen Strand.
The 6x Golden Globe nominee recently addressed his potential return to the character on the upcoming Nashville spinoff, for which his brother Chad Lowe serves as a co-executive producer and director.
“Well, I’ll have to ask Chad Lowe, my brother. See, all my family are gatekeepers to my own future business now,” joked Rob to Decider after starring with his son John Owen Lowe in Netflix’s 2023-’24 series Unstable.
Rob starred as Capt. Strand of Austin’s Fire Engine 126 for the Lone Star‘s five-season run, which ended on Fox in February. Popular comedian George Lopez has been starring alongside his daughter, Mayan Lopez, in the NBC multi-camera sitcom, Lopez Vs. Lopez, for the past three seasons. Unfortunately for fans of the series, its most recent season finale was also a series one, as NBC has officially canceled the series ahead of NBCUniversal's Upfronts presentation on May 12, 2025, in New York City. It was the last of the network's comedies to receive word of its future prospects, with Night Court also getting the axe earlier in the day.
Lopez Vs. Lopez is one of several sitcoms the stand-up comedian has created and starred in over the years. Prior to this, Lopez also starred in his eponymous ABC series, George Lopez, the one-season FX sitcom Saint George, Lopez for TV Land (which ran for two seasons), and even had a brief stint as a late-night host for two seasons on TBS. Let’s not dance around the truth: Since the death of his wife, tech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) has gotten a lot more idiosyncratic than usual. This is easily apparent in the opening minutes of Unstable, which introduce us to Ellis as he processes the death of his beloved wife through… dance.
What? Don’t most geniuses wake up in their scenic, hillside Los Angeles mansions and have a solo dance party to “Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)” before work?
Unfortunately, Ellis’ eccentricities are beginning to affect his biotechnology business, which is why his CFO Anna (Sian Clifford) calls on his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who had been working as a flute teacher in New York City, to bring some normalcy to the Dragon company.
Lowe is no stranger to on-screen “silly dancing,” he tells Tudum of his fancy footwork. “You can Google Chris Traeger dancing,” Lowe says, referring to his...

Two things are simultaneously going on with Rory Karpf’s “Grace Point.” One – you are offered to follow around a young guy named Brandon (John Owen Lowe), who, despite his unengaging screen presence, plays a troubled youth who you would want to do better. And two – a cyclic roundabout about him trying to run away from the demons of long-suppressed trauma and the fallacy of addiction. While these coinciding things offer us a pretty neat thriller that can double down as an allegory for addiction, Karpf’s inability to gracefully follow them up with something more concrete to take home and inserting a problematic twist makes things questionable.
The opening act is solid enough though. After an anxiety-inducing prologue, we see Brandon being driven across the country to a remote rehab center by his father Winston (Andrew McCarthy). Brandon is addicted to dope and despite knowing where he is being...

Quick Links Unstable Season 3: Further News & Info
Netflix's unorthodox comedy Unstable returned to the platform for its second season in 2024, but the streamer has canceled season 3. Starring the real-life father and son duo of Rob and John Owen Lowe, Unstable concerns unassuming Jackson (John Owen Lowe) who must reconnect with his eccentric tech-mogul father (Rob Lowe) and help save him and his company from disaster. A more humorous take on the rich family in distress formula perfected in HBO's Succession, Unstable shines because of the undeniable chemistry between the two leads and its unique take on the workplace comedy genre.

In a blow to workplace comedy fans, Netflix has decided to bring another one of its series to a halt. The streaming giant will not be renewing Unstable for a third season, according to recent reports. Created by and starring Rob Lowe, a beloved member of the Brat Pack, and his son Owen Lowe, the show struggled to gain traction among Netflix viewers, which led to the cancelation.
Unstable centers around the eccentric and chaotic world of a biotechnology company run by the charismatic but narcissistic-adjacent Ellis Dragon (Lowe) and his introverted son Jackson (Owen), who only arrives on the scene in order to save his father from spiraling and sending the company in ruins as he mourns the loss of his wife. The series explores the complicated relationship shared by the father-son duo and satirizes the dysfunctional workplace. Lowe and Owen act as executive producers alongside Victor Fresco, the...

Netflix is pulling the plug on another series after a two-season run. The decision comes nearly three months after the second season dropped on the streaming platform.
Per Variety, Netflix has canceled Unstable after two seasons. The workplace comedy series, which co-starred Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, originally premiered on Netflix in March 2023. Season 2 debuted on Aug. 1, and the future of the series has since been unclear. The show getting the boot means that the big political cliffhanger in the finale will not be resolved.

The biotechnology company Dragon is officially closing its doors for good. After two seasons, Netflix has opted not to move forward with Unstable, the workplace comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe. Executive produced by the father-son duo alongside Emmy-nominated Mad About You producer Victor Fresco, the show cast the younger Lowe as the socially shy son of a successful, admired, and, for lack of a better word, unstable biotech company CEO who takes a job at his dad's research facility to keep him from spiraling after his wife's death. Mixing humor and family drama with some inspiration from Rob and John's real-life relationship, it forced both father and son to navigate personal challenges to avoid disaster and ultimately help the world.

“Unstable,” the comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, has been canceled after two seasons on Netflix.
The workplace comedy premiered on Netflix on March 30, 2023, and its second season came on Aug. 1, 2024. It followed Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, the CEO and founder of a biotechnology company who struggled after the death of his wife. His estranged son Jackson, who played Lowe’s real-life son, joins the company despite pursuing a career playing the flute. He also helps his father with his mental health and reconnects with him. The show leaned into the meta-ness of the Lowes playing an eccentric father and high-strung son.
“It took doing a TV show with each other for Rob and I to re-explore some of the deeper parts of our interpersonal relationship, so we figured, why not make it so that Ellis and Jackson have to literally play characters in order...

Netflix has canceled its comedy series Unstable after two seasons.
The series, co-created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, debuted its second season on Aug. 1. The show didn’t make the streamer’s internal top 10 rankings in the weeks following its release; the 10th-ranked show for its premiere week had 1.4 million views (hours viewed divided by running time). Unstable also didn’t show up in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for August.
The show’s first season, which premiered in March 2023, made one appearance in Netflix’s own rankings (which were determined by total viewing hours at that time) and two in the Nielsen streaming charts.
More to come.

Exclusive: Netflix is not proceeding with a third season of Unstable, its comedy series starring and co-created/executive produced by Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe.
The news, which I hear has been relayed to the crew, is not surprising because Season 2 — which debuted August 1 — failed to break into the Netflix Top 10, meaning that it drew fewer than 1.4M views in its opening weekend and fewer than 1.3M views in its first full week. Netflix executives base their renewal decisions on viewing vs. cost.
According to sources, the producers had already been quietly shopping the show. As Deadline has reported, finding a new home for a Netflix original is tricky as it comes with a lot of limitations, making a linear network the most realistic option. This is what happened with One Day At A Time, which moved to Pop post-cancellation, with That ’90s Show producers believed to...

The father-son duo of Ellis and Jackson Dragon return for another season of hijinks at their biotech company. Picking up where season one left off, Ellis finds himself in hot water after an explosive act of arson against a rival. Thankfully for the unbalanced CEO, some well-placed strings are pulled to keep him out of prison.
This allows Ellis’ antics to continue unfettered in the new episodes. While the grief and family drama that defined last season takes a step back, the workplace shenanigans move to the fore. Ellis struggles to gracefully hand more responsibility to Jackson and others in the company. But growing the business is seldom his true priority.

While many TV shows are focused on straight, white characters, 911: Lone Star made it clear that there would be more minority characters. Even when it comes to the straight, white men, there are elements to their characters that we wouldn’t usually see on the screen.
Despite this, fans have complained about how these minority characters have been underused. In a way, I see it. There is a lot of focus on Rob Lowe’s Owen Strand in every single episode. A feature film sequel to the seminal 1985 Brat Pack movie “St. Elmo’s Fire” is in early development, Rob Lowe confirmed in a recent interview. Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, talked to “Entertainment Tonight” about their Netflix comedy series “Unstable,” and the actor spoke about the possibility of rebooting “St. Elmo’s Fire” as a Sony film.
“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe said about a potential sequel. He said the release of the “Brats” documentary earlier this summer from fellow Brat Packer Andrew McCarthy has “only added to the excitement around it.”
