When it comes to Christmas horror movies, nothing gets the holiday spirit flowing like an evil Santa. These films take the jolly Santa we know and turn him into a creepy maniac with an appetite for gore. Instead of spreading cheer, evil Santa spreads fear, slashing his way through snow-covered streets and creeping down chimneys with murderous intent. To turn the most wonderful time of the year into a nightmare, spending time with any of the scariest killer Santa Clauses in horror movies should do the trick.

Some of these holiday horrors have arguably earned a spot among the best horror movies of all time for their unique blend of festivities and brutal violence. With Santa as the ultimate villain, they are packed with blood, chaos, and more than a little holiday madness. That is a remarkably generic title for this horror film, which also just seems like a sort of remake/remix of The Thing, with a similar premise. Two scientists uncover a meteorite impact site in the Arctic tundra, but it kills one scientist and infects the other. A nearby base takes in the lone survivor whilst trying to understand what happened. The lone survivor may not be the person they think she is. There’s a new virus, and our protagonist is a lawyer. visiting a campsite, to complete a purchase for a mysterious buyer, where she meets a handsome, yet surly employee / the current owner. Before long, we are joined by our beautiful, rich kids, there to square their dodgy dealings, and generally be so obnoxious we don’t mind later when bad stuff happens to them.

"Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves..." Black Mandala Productions has released an official trailer for Ash & Dust, a gritty crime horror-thriller from Canada made by the filmmaker Adrian Langley. The film is set in a small town where two modest couples find themselves caught up in a game of life & death with a vicious gang after the discovery of a mysterious box buried long ago. That's all we really know about this film, which hasn't premiered at any festivals yet, but still looks pretty dang good. The first two posters for this are fantastic - and these are what caught my eye at first (see both below). The film stars Anne-Carolyne Binette, Nick Biskupek, Blake Canning, Mac Dale, Carly Fawcett, Kayla Meyer, Doug Phillips, and Simon Phillips. This looks quite unique, with some strong style showing all kinds of double-crossing madness in a snowy small town up in Canada.

I remember seeing Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the middle of the 90s, almost two decades after it was released, and being blown away by it. It was dirty, gritty, harsh, violent, sadistic and raw. It was one of my first true forays into horror, and it stuck with me. It remains one of my favourite examples of the genre to this day. Since then there have been many films released that have attempted to replicate the tone of Hooper’s demented masterpiece. This seems to be a bit of an homage to the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre, about a family of deranged maniacs living out in the middle of nowhere who just love to murder. It was directed by Adrian Langley (Gutshot) who also co-wrote the script with Daniel Weissenberger (Come True), and stars Simon Phillips, Michael Swatton (The Lesson), Julie Mainville (We Are The Missing), Anne-Carolyne Binette (The Scarlet Vultures), James Hicks (Midway), and Frederik Storm (The Nights Before Christmas).

I reviewed Once Upon Time At Christmas in 2018 and although it was a decent enough low budget slasher movie, it’s not a movie I was expecting a sequel to appear from. Yet here we are two years later with The Nights Before Christmas.

The synopsis in very simple terms, is basically the same as the first film. Santa Claus (well a guy dressed as him) goes on a killing spree, accompanied by Mrs Claus and being chased by the F.B.I. Being a slasher means that a lot of the enjoyment from this for many will be how entertaining the death scenes are. And in that regard, The Nights Before Christmas does pretty well for itself.
