Under Paris (2024)
The Last Breath (2024) Ending Explained – Which of Noah’s Friends Survive till the End?
Under Paris (2024)
2024 seems to be the year of shark thrillers! After making a sensational return in “Under Paris” (2024), they once again come back to thrill us in “The Last Breath” (2024), directed by Joachim Hedenis. Although the sharks don’t show up until quite late into the movie, when they do, they are traveling at lightning speed and only show interest in human blood. All the while, a group of five friends try to escape from the ruins of a sunken WWII ship discovered somewhere off the coast of a Caribbean island.

If you choose the willing suspension of disbelief, this film has a lot to like. However, the Jaws references, and the CGI sharks almost make you want to scream ‘Cute’ after every 10 minutes in the second half of the film. “The Last Breath” (2024) is fun if you let underwater claustrophobia entertain you, and if you have watched it already, here’s...

Here’s the full synopsis: “Finding the long-lost wreck of the warship USS Charlotte has been the lifelong pursuit of Levi (Julian Sands), an aging expat running a tourist dive business in the British Virgin Islands together...

‘The Last Breath’ Review
Image
Stars: Julian Sands, Jack Parr, Arlo Carter, Erin Mullen, Kim Spearman, Alexander Arnold | Written by Andrew Prendergast, Nick Saltrese | Directed by Joachim Hedén

Notably, The Last Breath features the last performance by the late Julian Sands to reach the screen. Sadly, it’s a supporting role that doesn’t give him, or more likely his stunt double, a lot of screen time or much to do until the end of the film…

1944, somewhere off the US Virgin Islands, a German U Boat sinks the USS Charlotte. There are survivors, but where there are survivors, there are sharks. In the present, Levi (Julian Sands) has been searching for the wreck for decades, and, along with Noah he’s finally found it.

A group of Noah’s friends, Logan, Riley (Erin Mullen; Midsomer Murders), Sam who happens to be Noah’s ex, and her instantly hateable brother Brett arrive for a vacation.

Image
Get ready to take a deep dive into terror with The Last Breath, the latest shark-infested horror film from acclaimed Swedish director Joachim Hedén. Rlje Films has just released the official trailer for this white-knuckle thriller, set to debut in select US theatres and on VOD on July 26, 2024, and 1st July in the UK and Ireland.

The Last Breath tells the harrowing tale of a group of divers who find themselves trapped in the wreckage of the USS Charlotte, a WWII battleship lost for 80 years. Their adventure begins with the excitement of a once-in-a-lifetime dive but quickly spirals into a nightmare as they realise they are not alone in the underwater labyrinth. Surrounded by great white sharks and with their air supply dwindling, the group faces a desperate fight for survival.

The narrative centres around Levi, a British expat diver played by the late Julian Sands (A Room with a View...

The Last Breath trailer: shark thriller featuring Julian Sands reaches theatres and VOD in July
Image
Actor Julian Sands (Warlock) went missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy back in January of 2023, and sadly, his remains were found the following June. Just four months before Sands went missing, we reported on a film called The Last Breath, a shark thriller he was working on. He gave one of his final performances in this film – and soon, we’re going to have the chance to see that performance. Rlje Films will be giving The Last Breath a theatrical and VOD release on July 26th, and with that date right around the corner, a trailer has dropped online. It can be seen in the embed above.

Scripted by Nick Saltrese (Prayer Before Dawn), The Last Breath follows a group of college friends who embark on a once-in-a-lifetime dive. However, their adventure quickly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of a shipwreck and...

“…finding the long-lost wreck of the warship ‘USS Charlotte’ has been the lifelong pursuit of ‘Levi’ (Sands), an aging expat running a tourist dive business in the British Virgin Islands together with recent college dropout ‘Noah’ (Parr).

“When the USS Charlotte emerges for the first time in eighty years after a tropical storm, Noah’s friends visiting the island insist for them all to do a once-in-a-lifetime dive on the newly discovered wreck before it’s handed over to the authorities.

“The dream dive rapidly turns into a nightmare as they become trapped in the darkness of the Charlotte’s interior, thirty meters down and with a dwindling air supply. And then they discover that they are not alone…...

The Last Breath review – Julian Sands’s last film is solid shark-meets-shipwreck thriller
Julian Sands
A group of friends are terrorised by a shark while exploring a shipwreck in an unremarkable film that marks Sands final outing onscreen

In most respects this suspense-thriller with aquatic antagonists is pretty unremarkable, apart from the sad fact that it was British actor Julian Sands’s last film before he died while hiking. It’s a shame that he didn’t have a more interesting role, but few get to choose their swan song. Sands has a strictly functional supporting role here as Levi, a grizzled boat captain originally from Blighty, looking for the wreck of a ship that went down in the Caribbean during the second world war. Unable to dive any more because of an injury, Levi stays onboard supposedly knitting (even though the red hat he wears looks more like a misbegotten crochet project) while his younger crewmate Noah (Jack Parr) searches the ocean floor.

The Last Breath: first image from Breaking Surface director’s shark thriller has been unveiled
Image
Last year, writer/director Joachim Hedén brought us the survival thriller Breaking Surface (watch it Here), about a woman struggling to save her sister, who was trapped underwater by a rockslide in the icy waters of Norway. Now Hedén is in production on another thriller about diving – but this time around, the threat to the divers are sharks. Filming in Belgium, the shark thriller may or may not end up being called The Last Breath. The Wreck has also come up as a potential title. But whatever the title happens to be, the first image from the film has been unveiled online and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

According to Deadline, The Last Breath – I’m just going to keep calling it that for now – has been written by Nick Saltrese (Prayer Before Dawn). The story centers on

‘The Last Breath’ – New Shark Attack Movie Swims Off to a World War II Shipwreck [Image]
Breaking Surface (2020)
More shark attack horror is on the way with The Last Breath, and Deadline lets us know this week that filming is underway in Belgium. They’ve also shared a first-look image (above).

Joachim Hedén (Breaking Surface) is directing a script by Nick Saltrese (Prayer Before Dawn).

“The survival thriller follows five college friends who go scuba diving into a recently uncovered WWII shipwreck in the British Virgin Islands, where they find themselves trapped by great white sharks.”

Jack Parr (Peaky Blinders), Kim Spearman (As I Am) and Erin Mullen star alongside Julian Sands (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

Deadline notes that Eric Börjeson (Let The Right One In) is the cinematographer.

Released back in 2020, Joachim Hedén’s Breaking Surface is one hell of an intense underwater thriller, so we cannot wait to see what Hedén does with sharks added into the mix.

This should be one to keep an eye on!

Debut director managed his own UK theatrical release during pandemic.

Dean Devlin’s Electric Entertainment has acquired US rights to UK drama As I Am, the feature debut of writer/director Guy Davies.

In a deal struck directly with the filmmakers, it is understood that a theatrical release is being planned for May, before the feature is rolled out on digital platforms later in the summer.
