Push Review: Two-Thirds of a Masterpiece
Image
The modern home is a myth. It is sold not as shelter but as a sanctuary, a curated fortress against the chaos of the world. In Push, Natalie, a real estate agent, is a purveyor of this myth, tasked with selling the unsellable: a sprawling estate whose history is as dark and cavernous as its hallways.

Her own life is a monument to fractured ideals; she is eight months pregnant and navigating the aftershocks of her partner’s death. The house, then, is a perfect mirror for her state—vast, beautiful, and fundamentally broken.

She is attempting to sell a dream she can no longer afford to believe in. When her final appointment of the day arrives, a quiet man credited only as “The Client,” the professional facade crumbles. His presence is an immediate violation, a quiet tear in the fabric of civility. With his arrival, the house ceases to...

‘Push’ Review – ‘The Boy Behind the Door’ Filmmakers Deliver Extremely Tense Home Invasion Movie
Image
Writers/Directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell have a way with single-location thrillers that are simplistic in setup but visceral in unrelenting suspense. Their style of lean, efficient storytelling that puts the horror first continues with their latest, Push (formerly titled Open House). Armed with a much bigger location and stylish cinematography, Charbonier and Powell’s new movie makes for a more mature effort that delivers (pun intended) in a massive way when it comes to nail-biting tension and intense thrills.

Realtor Natalie (Alicia Sanz) takes on the impossible task of selling a sprawling, stunning estate that’s been vacant for many years thanks to a grisly murder that took place there. Her boss doesn’t think she can do it; no one has so far. But Natalie has a lot riding on this sale. She’s still trying to pick up the pieces from the loss of her significant other,...

Interview with Push Writers / Directors David Charbonier & Justin Powell
Image
Push is Shudder’s intense home invasion thriller from David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the writing / directing duo responsible for The Boy Behind the Door and The Djinn. Starring Alicia Sanz and Raúl Castillo, Push revolves around "a pregnant realtor who is attacked by a sadistic killer at her open house, sending her into premature labor. Up against a physiological ticking clock, Natalie must find a way to escape before she gives birth." From the origins of the story, to casting, the on-set experience, and influences, I caught up with Charbonier and Powell to discuss the making of Push for our latest video interview.

"Haunted by the memory of her late fiancé, Natalie Flores finds herself 8 months pregnant and in desperate need of a new start. Determined to regain her sense of self, she moves to America and uses her real estate license to take on a challenging listing.

However,...

‘Possession: Kerasukan’ – Netflix Quietly Released an Indonesian Remake of 1981’s ‘Possession’
Image
Fans of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession weren’t exactly thrilled to learn that a remake is on the way from Paramount and Smile filmmaker Parker Finn, but director Razka Robby Ertanto beat the remake to the punch with Possession: Kerasukan.

The loose Indonesian remake of the cult horror film has quietly been available to stream on Netflix for months.

The synopsis reads the same, “Returning from military duty, Faris is shocked to learn that his wife wants a divorce. He decides to investigate and discovers a sinister secret.”

Żuławski’s film recently received a new 4K restoration, “Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Sam Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming,...

Shudder has acquired Push, from the creators of The Boy Behind the Door
Image
Shudder has acquired Push, the new film written and directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell. The horror streaming platform previously acquired Charbonier’s and Powell’s thriller The Boy Behind the Door in 2021.

The two creators, who have been friends since childhood, were interviewed by 1428 Elm after The Boy Behind the Door came to Shudder. During the interview, we talked about that film and their other horror/thriller The Djinn, which premiered around the same time.

Both of their previous films placed focus on kids, and both starred Ezra Dewey. With Push, Charbonier and Powell step into the world of home invasion, telling the story of Natalie Flores, a realtor who is holding an open house at a huge property she is tasked with selling. Unfortunately, the home was the site of a grisly murder years earlier. Natalie, who is pregnant, is attacked by a killer during her open house,...

Push: Shudder Acquires Home Invasion Horror From The Boy Behind The Door Duo
Image
Shudder have announced that they have acquired Push, the home invasion horror from David Charbonier and Justin Powell, diretors of Djinn and The Boy Behind the Door.    The film follows Natalie Flores, a pregnant realtor who is attacked by a sadistic killer at her open house, sending her into premature labor. Up against a physiological ticking clock, Natalie must find a way to escape before she gives birth. I reviewed Push after it played at Sitges. While I had issue with the lack of gore after a lot of the horror was left to the mind's eye I did appreciate the thriller aspect of the movie.    Charbonier and Powell know the thriller playbook very well. The use of sound is not overcooked. They use...

Shudder Acquires Home Invasion Thriller ‘Push’ Starring Alicia Sanz and Raúl Castillo (Exclusive)

Shudder had pull for “Push,” as the all-horror-all-the-time streamer has acquired the home invasion thriller ahead of its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, Calif. later this month. “Push” stars Alicia Sanz, seen in Prime Video’s “El Cid,” and Raúl Castillo, seen in “Smile 2” and “Army of the Dead,” as a realtor and a killer, respectively. Image
Writers/Directors David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the exciting duo behind recent horror movies The Djinn and The Boy Behind the Door, are back with a new intense horror movie in Push (read my review).

The film, which just received its world premiere at Sitges, follows a pregnant realtor, Natalie, who must survive a night of terror when a deranged client shows up at her open house. That the woman is on the cusp of giving birth means time is of the essence, compounding survival odds.

Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Raúl Castillo star in the tense home invasion horror movie.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with the filmmakers ahead of Push‘s premiere about the film’s origins and how they keep wringing maximum, nail-biting tension from minimalist, single-location setups.

Like the filmmaker’s previous films, Push (formerly titled Open House) takes place almost entirely within a house. But this house is a labyrinthine mansion,...

Mute Boy Trapped with a Sinister Monster 'The Djinn' Horror Trailer
Ezra Dewey in The Djinn (2021)
"We start thinking about the things we're missing... and forget about the things we have." Holy hell this looks freaky! IFC Films has released an official trailer for the indie horror The Djinn, finally being released in May this year in both theaters + on VOD at the same time. A mute boy is trapped in his apartment with a sinister monster when he makes a wish to fulfill his heart's greatest desire. That is a simple setup, but this looks insanely creepy overall. This stars Ezra Dewey as Dylan, along with Rob Brownstein, Tevy Poe, Donald Pitts, and John Erickson. The apartment cinematography in this (by Dp Julián Estrada) is what makes it effectively scary. This really seems like it could end up a sleeper hit just because it's so disturbing. Here's the first official trailer for David Charbonier & Justin Powell's The Djinn, from IFC's YouTube: A...
