Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.
The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.
The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.
The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

Focus Features will release Working Title’s Mary Queen Of Scots on Friday, December 7, 2018 – limited in North America. Previously having been set for November 2, 2018, the new date places the movie in prime Oscar season contention.

Darkest Hour, starring Academy Award winner Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, received six nominations and went onto win statuettes for Best Actor and Achievement in makeup and hairstyling, while Phantom Thread, also garnering six nominations and starring Daniel Day Lewis, took home the Oscar for Achievement in costume design (Mark Bridges).
