‘Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story’ Review: An Intriguing but Sluggish Postscript for the Count’s Nemesis
Image
Plenty of horror movies have shifted the focus from vampires to vampire hunters, imagining an underground network of stake-drivers combatting the elusive breed of bloodsuckers. Sometimes the two sides overlap, as in the “Blade” films. “Abraham’s Boys” has the gist of an original angle that goes straight to the primary source of modern vampire mythologies.

Here, the protagonist is Dutch undead expert Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, who’d been called to England to fight a supernatural nemesis in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” That polymath, famously played by everyone from Peter Cushing, Laurence Olivier and Anthony Hopkins to Willem Dafoe (in last year’s “Nosferatu”), is now a recluse in the New World, hiding out from spectral pursuers 18 years after he’d helped orchestrate the Count’s extinction.

The twist is that fear of reprisal has turned this learned man into a paranoid tyrant, holding his family hostage in joyless...

Benito Skinner on Why ‘Overcompensating’ Deserves a Season 2: ‘Don’t You Want to See Hailee on Spring Break?’
Image
Amazon Prime’s “Overcompensating” dropped on May 15 to loving reviews and enthusiastic fan support — and its creator/star Benito Skinner is ready for a second lap.

“There’s so much more to say,” Skinner told IndieWire on the red carpet of at the TV Gotham Awards. “And also, don’t you want to see Hailee on spring break? That’s all I’m gonna say.”

In the series, Skinner plays closeted jock, Benny Scanlon, who’s trying to navigate his freshman year of college. Hailee is his party-loving roommate, played by Holmes.

“[Holmes is] so brilliant and … she’s incredible at improv. So, I feel like I knew that with the person I chose. So, I wanted her to run with it. I feel like I had so much fun writing that character,” Skinner said. “When she was in, I was like, ‘Go to fucking town’ … Haley took over, and it was just so,...

Prime Video’s New College Comedy Earns a Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Benito Skinner's comedy-routine-turned-tv-show, Overcompensating, is a hit with critics and viewers alike. Only four days after debuting on Prime Video, the show is certified fresh at 94% and 83% by viewers. There is a significant gap between critical and audience reception for the college-set comedy, but it's not big enough to tell a conflicting story. The numbers indicate that the show is being enjoyed by most viewers, giving it a great chance at scoring a second-season renewal. It's still early to know how the show is performing, but those numbers should be out soon, and maybe viewers will learn what happened after that massive cliffhanger involving Carmen (Wally Baram) and the revelation of a huge personal secret.

The eight-episode first season ensemble centers around Benny (Skinner), "a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.

How Benito Skinner Brought the Best of TikTok to ‘Overcompensating’: ‘This Cast Kind of Goes Crazy’
Image
Despite the Britney Spears music cue to start the show, it’s not luck that landed Benito Skinner — aka Benny Drama — his very own Prime Video comedy series. Still, the “Overcompensating” creator, star and executive producer feels very lucky to have assembled such an all-star cast, all of whom shined on the yellow carpet at the Palladium Theater premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

“I just approached it by picking whoever was perfect for the role. If you make me laugh on my phone, I want you in it, I want friends in it, comedians I’m obsessed with who haven’t gotten their platform to shine, just people I love so much. Whether they’re from the Internet or not, let’s put the funniest people in this,” he told TheWrap. “Whatever I did, I’ll do it again. This is insane, I’m so lucky.”

Overcompensating earns TV-ma rating with sex, nudity, and vulgar college antics (parents guide)
Image
It's time to relive the gloriously stressful, awkward, and party-heavy days of college with Prime Video's hilariously honest new comedy series Overcompensating. The college comedy comes from comedian Benito Skinner, who stars in the series loosely based on his experiences as a former closeted jock simply trying to fit in with his straight male college classmates. One blunder after another, Benny stumbles in his attempts to stifle who he really is to appease others.

But this isn't a watered down depiction of the college experience. In Overcompensating, we're joining Benny and his friends on various uncomfortable sexual encounters, secret society hazing rituals, drug and alcohol-fueled Charli Xcx concerts and tailgates, and everything else that young adults get up to at college. Being so, the Prime Video series won't be for everyone, especially those who aren't comfortable with graphic nudity, underage drinking, and other mature subject matter.

‘Overcompensating’ Trailer: Benito Skinner Tries to Survive College in Jonah Hill and A24 Produced Series

Benito Skinner is bringing the drama to Prime Video with his semi-autobiographical comedy series “Overcompensating.” Skinner, Aka Benny Drama, makes his TV debut with the star-studded series that he writes, executive produces, and acts in. The college-set show centers on former football player and homecoming king Benny (Skinner) whose journey as a closeted gay man leads to “horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs,” as the logline teases.

The official synopsis reads: “Benny becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs. With guidance from Benny’s older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend (Adam Dimarco), Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. 8 Ways Harold Perrineau's From Repeats Lost
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3.

Since debuting in 2022, From has gained increasingly more acclaim, and garnered comparisons to another hit series – Lost. The comparisons are partly due to the creative talent involved in both series. Harold Perrineau, who played Michael Dawson in Lost, leads From's cast of characters in the role of Boyd Stevens. Lost's Jack Bender, who was one of the show's executive producers and a director of iconic episodes like "Walkabout" and "The Constant," is also an executive producer and frequent director of From.

Beyond the overlap in creative talent, there are similarities between From and Lost's premises and their overall narrative approaches. There is an overarching sense of mystery and intrigue, and while many Lost and From mysteries are solved, the answers often lead to more questions. Both series also have ensemble casts, and as seen in From season 3's ending, both...

From Season 4 Must Revive Boyd’s Biggest Story Set-Up That The Show Abandoned
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3.From season 4 should return to an abandoned season 3 storyline involving Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) and the monsters. In season 3, From's cast of characters were more threatened by the monsters than ever before. From season 3, episode 1 made this clear when the monsters let the farm animals loose at night and were waiting in the barn for Boyd and Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) when they returned with the animals. The monsters tearing open Tian-Chen's skull and killing her while they forced Boyd to watch was among the series' most brutal scenes so far.

The monsters did not relent after the premiere, as From season 3, episode 4 saw the monsters killing the paramedics the night they arrived in Town with Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno). Perhaps most haunting of all was the reveal in From season 3's ending that the creature growing inside Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori...

From Season 3 Finally Fulfilled A Popular Character Romance Wish In A Very Unexpected, Brutal Way
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 10, "Revelations: Chapter Two."

From season 3 made a popular fan romance come true at a brutal cost. Given the many horrors that From's characters constantly have to face in the Town, romance is often not at the forefront of the series. At the same time, romance has blossomed and been rekindled in the Town. Ellis Stevens (Corteon Moore) and Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) would never have met, let alone fallen in love and gotten married, if they had not become trapped in the Town.

When the Town trapped Marielle (Kaelen Ohm), she was unexpectedly reunited with her fiancée, Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot), who had been missing for months. Meanwhile, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey) were preparing to get divorced before they became stranded in the Town with their children but have since rebuilt some of their marriage.

'Makes You Very Present': From Season 3 Star on Show's Terrifying Stakes
Image
Three seasons of From have put Tabitha Matthews through a lot. The MGM+ horror series has pulled Tabitha in new directions every season, and Season 3 has been her most challenging yet. The season premiere thrust her into a separate world -- literally -- and from that point on, she has had to unravel new mysteries, both supernatural and emotional. Now there's just one episode left, so will Tabitha and her family be able to survive it?

In an interview with Cbr, From star Catalina Sandino Moreno discussed how the unpredictability of the show actually helps her as an actor. She also reflected on the journeys Tabitha has taken, both on her own and with her husband Jim. And she revealed the characters who have been the biggest influences on Tabitha, as she continues her exploration of everyone (and everything) in the town.

'He's Drowning': From Star Dissects Ellis' Season 3 Before the Finale

With From Season 3 coming to an end, it's time for Ellis Stevens and the other townsfolk to make their last stand. Just because the MGM+ show has been renewed for Season 4 doesn't mean that anyone is safe. That may even be true for Ellis, who has had an up and down arc that has seen some of his relationships improve and others start to come apart.

In an interview with Cbr, From star Corteon Moore discussed the popular idea that Ellis has plot armor because he's the son of Harold Perrineau's hero Boyd Stevens. He also talked about how Boyd and Ellis' relationship has grown across the third season, and how Ellis looks at his marriage with everything that's happened to Fatima. And why did he give up on trying to figure the show out?

‘From’ Renewed For Season 4 By MGM+
Image
MGM+ has renewed its hit sci-fi horror series From for a 10-episode fourth season.

Created by John Griffin (Crater) and executive produced by Griffin, showrunner Jeff Pinkner and director Jack Bender, the series unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. From is set to return to production in Nova Scotia in 2025, and premiere in 2026.

Harold Perrineau (Lost) leads an ensemble cast which includes Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey (Band of Brothers), Hannah Cheramy, Simon Webster (Strays), Ricky He (The Good Doctor), Chloe Van Landschoot, Corteon Moore (Utopia Falls), Pegah Ghafoori (The Perfect Wedding), David Alpay (Castle Rock), Elizabeth Saunders (Clarice), Avery Konrad (Honor Society), Scott McCord (East of Middle West), Nathan D. Simmons, Kaelen Ohm, Angela Moore, A.J. Simmons (Reacher), Deborah Grover (Night Heat), Robert Joy (CSI: NY) and Samantha Brown (Y: The Last Man).

“From has been a sensation for MGM+, capturing the attention of millions of viewers and helping us to shine a bright light on our MGM+ brand,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “Our talented show creators and cast have brilliantly and carefully crafted this wonderful show, and we look forward to providing the answers the From audience so enthusiastically craves in season 4!”

From has been a hit out of the gate for MGM+. The sci-fi drama is the most viewed series in the history of the premium network, and has a 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.

“We are thrilled by the support of our fans and our partners at MGM+ and are so excited to share the next chapter of our story with our FROMily. By the end of season 3, our characters will begin to understand why they are trapped in From Town… but will understanding help them to escape? And if so, how?” said Pinkner.

Perrineau plays Boyd Stevens, the sheriff whose Draconian rules have held the fragile town together, even as he searches for a way to escape this seemingly inescapable nightmare.

“With the culmination of Season Three we have, in many ways, reached the end of the beginning. In Season Four, a new journey begins. The question is whether it will lead our characters home, or deeper into this unrelenting nightmare,” said Griffin. “We are so grateful to our partners at MGM+ to be able to continue this tale and beyond excited to share the news with our amazing FROMily.”

Added Bender: “Congratulations and gratitude to Michael Wright and MGM+ for the incredible support. And to our brilliant family of actors and our gifted team in Nova Scotia. We’re looking forward to telling more of the tale.”

From is an Amazon MGM Studios production. Jeff Pinkner, John Griffin and Jack Bender serve as executive producers alongside Perrineau, Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec and Scott Rosenberg from Midnight Radio, Anthony and Joe Russo and Mike Larocca from Agbo, and Lindsay Dunn. Midnight Radio’s Adrienne Erickson serves as co-executive producer. The series is distributed internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

From Season 3 Is Teasing A Massive Original Character Death For The Finale, But It Would Be A Huge Mistake
Image
Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 3, episode 9, "Revelations: Chapter One."

From is setting up the death of a major character for the season 3 finale, but it wouldn't be a smart move for the show. Since opening the series with a young girl and her mother being devoured by From's monsters, the story has not been afraid to kill characters. This has continued to be the case with From season 3's deaths, including the monsters killing Tian-Chen Liu (Elizabeth Moy) in front of Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau) and Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) murdering Tillie (Deborah Grover).

After a season filled with so much loss, it feels inevitable that it will conclude with the most substantial loss yet. Fatima is seemingly in the most danger as she finds herself pregnant with a bloodthirsty creature, is held captive, and is being forced to give birth against her will. Killing Fatima would be...

Corteon Moore Talks Ellis In From Season 3 & Teases What’s To Come
Image
Ellis Stevens has had a rough go of it in From Season 3.

When the season began, he and his wife Fatima were in a good place as recent newlyweds expecting their first child, but things have gone from bad to worse, as they typically do in From land.

After learning they weren’t expecting as previously thought, Fatima continued to believe something was growing inside her, and her mood swings culminated in her stabbing Tillie during From Season 3 Episode 7.

(Chris Reardon/MGM+)

Ellis and his father Boyd temporarily took Fatima out of town, but unbeknownst to them, Elgin took her to a secret underground room, where he’s housing her thanks to the apparition he’s been seeing all season.

That led to a missing Fatima during From Season 3 Episode 9 and a devastated Ellis.

As previously stated, it’s been quite the journey for Ellis, who not only fretted about...

Whats Wrong With Fatima & Her Baby In From Season 3?
Image
From season 3, episode 2, "When We Go," has prompted viewers to wonder even more about what's wrong with Fatima's unborn baby. A few episodes before From season 2's cliffhanger ending, Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori) learned that she was pregnant after asking Kristi (Chloe Van Landschoot) for a test at the Clinic. Instead of being excited by the news, Fatima kept the development to herself. In fact, the very first person in From's cast of characters that Fatima told about her pregnancy was Donna (Elizabeth Saunders), the fiercely loving head of Colony House. Donna's rare optimism proves both jarring and helpful.

With Donna wanting to celebrate the big news, Fatima explains her hesitancy. Before arriving in From's Town, Fatima learned that she wasn't able to conceive children. This makes the pregnancy something of a miracle. However, given the Township's increasingly supernatural and aggressive developments, the mother-to-be is rightly worried that the miracle...

Season 3 of the captivating sci-fi horror TV series From premiered on MGM+ on September 22, 2024, expanding the action from the mysterious middle of American Township to a hospital in Camden, Maine. As Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno) learns how far she has traveled from her home, questions swirl around the strange hellish landscape the characters navigate after being trapped.

As Tabitha's husband, Jim (Eion Bailey), continues to search for her whereabouts outside of Township with Mayor Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), the clearer the mysterious neighborhood functions as a purgatorial allegory for lost souls trapped in between heaven and hell, with their spirits stuck in a horrifying limbo full of ghoulish monsters and nightmarish creatures of unknown origin. Harold Perrineau Breaks Down Harrowing Scene in “From” Season 3 Premiere [Interview]
Image
The third season of MGM+’s propulsive horror series “From“ has arrived, with the first episode ending on the series’ most intense scenes yet.

Last season, Boyd (Harold Perrineau) managed to kill one of the humanoid creatures in the woods, unleashing a metaphorical Pandora’s Box of terror in the process. While the season ended with that particular nightmare resolved, at least for the moment, it feels safe to say that the monsters are rather angry.

That builds to one of the most sinister confrontations with the creatures yet in the third season premiere…

Spoilers Ahead: The episode ends with Tian-Chen (Elizabeth Moy) triumphantly assisting Boyd in rescuing the escaped livestock, only to realize they’ve walked into a trap. The creatures bind Boyd to a support beam in the barn, forcing him to watch as they torture one of the town’s kindest souls.
