Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

My hunch about the higher production values for The Amityville Terror (2016) wound up being true, and whether it’s the slightly more polished look or a cast of professional actors, the sixteenth film in the “franchise” is easily the best in quite some time.

That’s grading on a scale since there are still some pretty glaring issues in the film, but, overall, director Michael Angelo has delivered a solidly entertaining Dtv film with soft callbacks to other franchise entries.

After a cold open that’s revealed to be a bracketing storyline, Amanda Barton’s screenplay quickly establishes a familiar foundation: a troubled family moves into a suspiciously cheap house on Amity Lane and the bad energy eventually manifests in murderous behavior.

With season 7 beginning on March 29th, 2023, the Riverdale cast has welcomed back some familiar faces while also introducing several new characters. Based on the Archie Comics, Riverdale began in 2017 as a simple crime drama and followed the lives of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones and Veronica Lodge as they investigated the death of their classmate, Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines). While the murder mystery formula in season 1 was a success, the show has since garnered interest for exploring other genres (such as the supernatural or horror) and coming up with the wildest and most fanciful subplots.

Season 7 seems to be continuing the trend as "The Core Four", along with their friends and loved ones, have all been transported back to 1955 after Tabitha saved them all from being hit by Bailey's Comet. Of the many mysteries present on Riverdale, the question of the Auteur's identity is one of the most gripping, and this arc makes up seasons 4 and 5 of the CW teen drama. The Auteur is referred to as the Voyeur at first and takes videotapes of the main characters' homes, which is nerve-wracking since no one is sure who is watching them. When the Auteur begins sharing videotapes that reenact some of the most brutal crimes in town, including Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope) killing his son Jason (Trevor Stines), the fear escalates, particularly since whoever is in these strange movies wears grotesque masks of the main characters' faces.

While Fp Jones (Skeet Ulrich) is a significant character on Riverdale, Ulrich decided to leave the teen drama show. The complex, unreliable parent of Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Jellybean (Trinity Likins) and the leader of the gang The Southside Serpents (until Jughead replaces him in the season 2 finale), F.P is often swept up in intense, dangerous situations. He has a brief prison sentence for lying about Jason Blossom's (Trevor Stines) season 1 killer, reunites with Betty Cooper's (Lili Reinhart) mother Alice (Mädchen Amick) in season 2, and becomes the town sheriff in season 3.

Ulrich decided to leave Riverdale before season 5, and another parent character said goodbye at the same time: Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols), Veronica Lodge's (Camila Mendes) mother. But while Ulrich played a father in this popular teen drama, he actually became famous for his '90s teen roles, including unlikable character Chris Hooker in The Craft, the 1996 horror film.

Riverdale season 7 has added new cast members, including a new twin for Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch). The CW series, which is a gritty reboot of the iconic characters of Archie Comics, has used Cheryl's twin brother Jason (Trevor Stines) as a plot point from the very beginning, as season 1 centered on solving his murder. Later on, the series' signature twists and turns included the revelation that Cheryl may have had a secret triplet named Julian who was absorbed in the womb and at one point supposedly possessed a haunted doll.

Exclusive: Concord Originals has partnered with Outfest Fusion to launch a one-of-a-kind short film financing and IP licensing initiative, in support of up-and-coming Lgbtqia+ filmmakers of color.

During Outfest Los Angeles in July, eligible filmmakers will pitch original short films incorporating one of three Concord-licensed songs to Outfest’s Artistic Director Faridah Gbadamosi, Concord Originals’ Director of Development and Production, Charles Hopkins, and a special guest judge yet to be announced. The winning filmmakers will be announced at the conclusion of the festival and will produce their short films with the support of Concord Originals and Outfest, ahead of being showcased at Outfest Fusion in 2023.

For its 100th episode, Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa scripted what is easily the show’s most audacious episode. “The Jughead Paradox” had the unenviable task of wrapping up the entire “Rivervale” saga and setting the stage for the rest of the series’ sixth season — which will air when the show returns in the spring. That alone would be enough of a challenge for any writer to tackle, yet Aguirre-Sacasa ups the creative ante by having the installment also become a meta funhouse mirror reflection of itself by reinserting long-gone characters into the narrative and having characters reflect on nearly every ridiculous thing that has ever happened during the series. Oh yeah, there is also the plotline about parallel universes colliding into each other and threatening to wipe out the whole of existence unless Jughead can save the day.

What it means to return home has proven to be a central theme for producer Lucinda Bruce across the past year and a half.

Not only is she involved in Niki Byrne’s US homecoming drama Evan Wood but Covid-19 has brought her back to her native state of Victoria for an extended period.

Originally, Archie Andrews and his pals at Riverdale High reflected the codification of teenage life, as they had more leisure time and disposable income. Once it hit big, the comic series and its infinite number of spinoffs, became stuck in amber, barely trying to keep up with changing trends (other than fashion) or concerns for teens. By the 2000s, the entire company was on the ropes, increasingly irrelevant in a rapidly changing world.

Riverdale hasn’t been a runaway success for The CW, but it so far seems to be doing fairly well. If nothing else, it’s introduced viewers to a lot of young up and coming actors, and among them is Trevor Stines. He plays Jason Blossom in the show, but it turns out that he now has his eye on an entirely different sort of comic book role.

Of all the comic book adaptations that have flooded film and television in recent years, perhaps none are as ambitious as Riverdale. The CW’s attempt to transport the family-friendly cast of Archie Comics into a dark and soapy teen drama could have been disastrous, but instead, it looks to be a very promising offering, calling to mind some of the network’s greatest hits, like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

Here’s six reasons why you should set your DVR for Riverdale, and prepare yourselves for a new fave.

1. A Cast of New, New Hotties (like The O.C. blessed us with)

One of the greatest things a teen drama can do is introduce viewers to a whole new cast of nearly-unknown hotties to swoon over. This is why certain segments of the population still dream of Adam Brody as the ultimate boyfriend or give Jared Leto a pass for almost anything.
