It Comes At Night's Ending Explained
Image
Paul's lack of trust and paranoia drives his decision-making in It Comes At Night's ending, leading to a violent confrontation with Will's family. Travis's nightmares serve as foreshadowing for the events of the movie and may be symptoms of the virus or fever dreams brought on by the illness. The movie purposely leaves many questions unanswered, including the nature of the virus and what "it" refers to, highlighting the themes of self-preservation and paranoia.

The Trey Edward Shults post-apocalyptic drama It Comes At Night tells the story of a family trying to survive in a world ravaged by an unexplained virus. This mysterious virus kills off a large swathe of the population, and a family has been surviving in a ramshackle cabin in the woods, cut off from fellow survivors. This ends when Will (Christopher Abbott) breaks in. After ensuring he's virus-free, Paul (Joel Edgerton) reluctantly allows Will and his family inside.

Raising Dion: Tevin Wakefield's Character, Explained
Image
Played Rome Flynn, Raising Dion's Tevon Wakefield was a memorable part of the Netflix series as he changed the lives of several main characters. Adapted from the short film and comic book written by Dennis Liu, the show follows Nicole Warren (Alisha Wainwright) as she takes care of her son, Dion (Ja'Siah Young), and grieves the loss of her husband, Mark (Michael B. Jordan). However, Dion is no ordinary child: he has several powers, including the ability to change ions, allowing him to heal animals and people, become invisible, and create fire. While each episode of Raising Dion is moving and shares a story about the bonds of family, Netflix canceled the series after season 2.

The unforgettable characters of Raising Dion reflect the show's classic themes of good versus evil, with Pat Rollins (Jason Ritter) able to turn into the Crooked Man, the main villain who wants to kill Dion.

Alisha Wainwright Says "Raising Dion" Is a Parenting Gem
Image
When "Raising Dion" premiered on Netflix in 2019, it achieved its goal of becoming a beloved kids' superhero show. The series follows the story of widowed mother Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) as she struggles to safely raise her superpowered son, Dion (Ja'Siah Young). While the show's first season depicted a coming-of-age story, season two - which arrived on Feb. 1 - largely focuses on the importance of family and community.

Much has changed for "Raising Dion" since its debut - mostly because of the pandemic, which largely impacted the show's second season. "Covid kind of prevented a lot of what we were used to doing," Wainwright tells Popsugar. "It would've been awful if we had started out that way. But thankfully, we had a foundation from season one where we were doing rehearsals, play dates, stuff in the park, and arcades to kind of help [Young] get comfortable with me."

"I really struggled with...

7 New Netflix Shows in February 2022 and the Best Reasons to Watch
Image
1. “Inventing Anna” (available February 11)

Why Should I Watch? On paper, “Inventing Anna” represents the kind of idea that’s too good to pass up. Take a true crime story about a duplicitous con artist who infiltrated New York’s elite social scene, ask one of modern television’s most skilled twist-tellers to craft a nine-episode limited series, and bam — you’ve got the tale of Anna Delvey, from super-producer Shonda Rhimes. “Inventing Anna” is actually Rhimes’ first series since “Scandal” where she’s serving as creator, and her first time in that roll on a Netflix show since her massive deal was secured in 2017 (and re-upped in 2021). Expect the hype machine to be in full force for this one.

Bonus Reason: Julia Garner, a two-time Emmy winner for “Ozark,” shifts into the lead position for “Inventing Anna,” playing the fake German heiress whose real name is Anna Sorokin. Given her...

Frightfest 2019: ‘Daniel Isn’t Real’ Review
Stars: Miles Robbins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sasha Lane, Mary Stuart Masterson, Hannah Marks, Chukwudi Iwuji, Griffin Robert Faulkner, Nathan Reid, Chase Sui Wonders, Andrew Bridges, Peter McRobbie | Written by Adam Egypt Mortimer, Brian DeLeeuw | Directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer

Based on co-writer Brian DeLeeuw’s novel In This Way I Was Saved, Daniel Isn’t Real is the second feature from director Adam Egypt Mortimer (Some Kind of Hate). Dark, disturbing and beautifully made, it takes the basic idea of an evil imaginary friend and twists it into a chilling and intense nightmare that goes to some unexpected places.

Daniel Isn’t Real begins in New York, where eight year old Luke (Griffin Robert Faulkner) gains an imaginary friend called Daniel (Nathan Reid) as a way of coping with both his divorcing parents and the fact that he’s just stumbled upon the aftermath of a mass shooting. However, when Daniel...

SXSW 2019 Reviews: Daniel Isn’T Real, Them That Follow, and Villains
Now that we’re onto Day 143 of SXSW 2019, here’s a look at three more movies I had the chance to check out this year during the festival, including Daniel Isn’t Real from Adam Egypt Mortimer, the religious drama Them That Follow (which I had sadly missed at Sundance in January), and the criminally fun romp Villains by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen.

Daniel Isn’t Real: After Halloween (2018), I was as an instant fan of Miles Robbins’, who played Vicky’s heroic boyfriend Dave in the sequel, so I was incredibly happy to see him involved with Daniel Isn’t Real, the latest genre effort from director Adam Egypt Mortimer. An innovative and thought-provoking descent into madness, Daniel Isn’t Real was one of the biggest highlights for me out of this year’s Midnighters slate at SXSW, and is an exemplary effort from everyone involved, pushing storytelling...

SXSW Film Review: ‘Daniel Isn’t Real’
An alter ego gets a little too altering in “Daniel Isn’t Real.” Based on co-writer Brian DeLeeuw’s novel “In This Way I Was Saved,” this strong second feature for director Adam Egypt Mortimer centers on an unhappy youth whose childhood “imaginary friend” returns to active duty, to initially helpful ends that all too soon turn malevolent and destructive. Spectrevision’s stylishly crafted psychological horror thriller has enough twists and finesse to attract favorable attention beyond genre bounds, signaling upbeat prospects for exposure in various formats.

City kid Luke (initially played by Griffin Robert Faulkner) has to bear a lot of stress for an 8-year-old: His parents are splitting up, and his mother Claire (Mary Stuart Masterson) is unstable, to put it mildly. Leaving the house one day to escape another marital argument, he comes across something even more traumatic — the aftermath of a seemingly random mass shooting.

It...

‘It Comes At Night’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Joel Edgerton, Christopher Abbott, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Griffin Robert Faulkner, Riley Keogh | Written and Directed by Trey Edward Shults

Ah, the thrill of plunging into a good movie with no prior knowledge. It’s rare, not simply because of the ubiquity of marketing material in the connected world, but also because said films don’t usually live up to the version imagined in one’s own mind… It Comes At Night is a dark, small-scale apocalyptic thriller that works best if all you know is that it’s a dark, small-scale apocalyptic thriller. It is taut, tense, brutal, scary, and filled with perfectly calibrated performances. Now, go see it.

Okay, if you must know more, here we go. The setting is sometime after some kind of apocalypse. An old man is dying. Paul (Joel Edgerton) takes him to the woods, shoots him, and then incinerates his body.

“It Comes At Night” looks to be a breakout indie horror tale
Independent horror has been having a bit of a resurgence these days, as I’ve spoken of over the past couple of years. Auteur driven scares are on the rise, even if studios are largely still trying to bank on reboots, remakes, and sequels. This week, an original outing comes our way when It Comes At Night hits theaters, hoping to scare not just indie audiences, but the moviegoing populace at large. The recent tradition started by the likes of The Babadook, It Follows, and The Witch, to name three, will likely continue here. This flick is going to develop quite the following. The film is a chamber piece, set in the aftermath of some sort of apocalyptic event. Paul (Joel Edgerton) keeps himself and his family alive using a very strict set of rules. These rules apply to everyone, even said family. It has protected his wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo...

‘It Comes at Night’ Review: Joel Edgerton and Christopher Abbott Face Off In Trey Shults’ Frightening Post-Apocalyptic Thriller
It Comes at Night (2017)
There are many movies about horror in the woods, but “It Comes at Night” stretches that trope into a paranoid headtrip. Writer-director Trey Shults’ sophomore effort follows up on the promise of his tense family drama “Krisha” with another expertly-told look at family bonds jeopardized within the claustrophobic boundaries of a creepy home. This time, however, the stakes have gone beyond the challenges of addiction and estrangement to involve matters of life and death.

Once again, Shults has delivered a top-notch psychological thriller, but “It Comes at Night” builds an unnerving atmosphere around unspecified sci-fi circumstances. Its central premise involves the struggles of a family unit in the aftermath of a plague that seems to have wiped out much of civilization. That much may sound familiar, but it’s only a starting point for more unpredictable turns.

Patriarch Paul (a scowling, bearded Joel Edgerton) manages the daily routine alongside his...

It Comes at Night Trailer Will Seriously Creep You Out
It Comes at Night (2017)
A24 has released the first trailer and poster for their upcoming horror-thriller It Comes At Night, which is slated for release on August 25. This story centers on a father, played by Joel Edgerton, who will stop at nothing to protect his wife and son from a malevolent, mysterious presence terrorizing them right outside their doorstep. We don't get too many clues about what this mysterious presence is from the first trailer, but this thriller could become one of this summer's sleeper hits.

Joel Edgerton leads a minimalist cast that also includes Riley Keough, Christopher Abbot, Carmen Ejogo, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Griffin Robert Faulkner. This project came together quite rapidly, with Joel Edgerton signing on to star just this past June, although those reports weren't clear on whether filming had already begun when he was announced. It seems unlikely that more plot details will be unveiled between now and the August 25 release,...
