Restless Review: A Neighbor’s War, A Psyche’s Collapse
Image
Jed Hart’s “Restless” plunges into a primal fear: the invasion of one’s personal sanctuary by relentless, inescapable noise. The film introduces us to Nicky (Lyndsey Marshal), a geriatric nurse whose life, marked by the recent departure of her son to university and the quietude of her terraced house, possesses a fragile order.

She inhabits a world of gentle routines—classical music, solitary baking, the comforting glow of televised billiards. This carefully constructed peace, however, is precariously balanced. The arrival of new neighbors in the adjoining house, formerly her parents’, signals an imminent disruption.

“Restless” establishes itself as a domestic drama teetering on the edge of a psychological thriller, a study in how quickly the mundane can curdle into the menacing when the basic right to quiet is violated. The initial framing effectively sets a tone of unease, hinting at the profound disturbance about to unfold in Nicky’s small,...

We’ve all had our fair share of experiences with rotten neighbors. Whether they’re too nosy or too loud, having a bad neighbor can be hell on Earth. Writer and director Jed Hart taps into that hellish experience with his feature film debut, Restless. It’s the story of one woman desperate for peace from the new tenants next door…

In the film, “Nicky is an empty nester whose quiet life is turned upside down when hard-partying—and potentially dangerous—new neighbors move in next door.”

In our exclusive clip, Nicky steps into something gross and uses it as an opportunity to make her new neighbors a delicious treat…

Watch the clip below:

Lyndsey Marshal (The Hours), Aston McAuley (Rebus), Barry Ward (Extra Ordinary), Kate Robbins (Unforgotten), Denzel Baidoo (Suspicion), and Ciara Ford (Fool Me Once) star in the new thriller.

‘Restless’ Review
Image
Stars: Lyndsey Marshal, Aston McAuley, Barry Ward | Written and Directed by Jed Hart

Writer/director Jed Hart makes an impressive debut with British horror Restless, about the extremely relatable terror of having nightmare neighbours. If you’ve ever sat in your home, gritting your teeth while loud music pounds in from next door and fantasising about exacting violent revenge, this is the movie for you.

Lyndsey Marshal plays Nicky, a care home nurse who has recently lost her parents, who lived in the house next door on her run-down estate. Most evenings, Nicky’s life consists of nothing more exacting than a spot of yoga, some classical music and cuddling up with the cat on the sofa to watch the snooker, but that tranquillity is rudely shattered when tracksuit-wearing thirty-something Deano (Aston McAuley) moves into her parents’ place next door and spends every night having loud parties with a thumping music system blaring away.

UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘A Minecraft Movie’ builds its way into 675 cinemas
Image
Warner Bros’ A Minecraft Movie leads new titles in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as the video game adaptation opens in 675 locations.

This is slightly fewer screens than Universal’s fellow videogame adaptationThe Super Mario Bros which launched in 721 cinemas in 2023. That scored £8.7m in its opening weekend and went on to gross a mega £55m.

A Minecraft Movie is based on the multibillion-dollar sandbox game Minecraft in which players are free to build, create and form communities. Films based on video games have proved successful in the territory – all three Sonic The Hedgehog titles opened above £4m while...

Lyndsey Marshal in Rome (2005)
Restless review – relatable real-life horror in nightmare neighbour thriller
Lyndsey Marshal in Rome (2005)
Writer and director Jed Hart’s debut psycho-thriller is very nearly a decent film but is let down by a script that goes completely awry

First-time feature director Jed Hart starts with a great premise for a low-budget psychological thriller about a very real subject, and he gets good performances from his three actors. Hart’s direction is strong, but it’s better than his script; for me the movie, having established its realist credentials, is let down by a completely unreal and silly ending.

Nicky, played by Lyndsey Marshal, is a hard-working agency nurse who is all alone, a single mum to a son away at uni. She lives a lonely but reasonably content life, listening to classical music, doing yoga and vaguely dating a clueless but nice man called Kevin, played by Barry Ward. But all this is utterly destroyed when a lairy and aggressive guy moves into...

Spilt Milk, the directorial debut of Ireland’s Brian Durnin, won the audience award at the Glasgow Film Festival, which marked the final edition under the leadership of Allison Gardner.

The feature had its world premiere last year at Tallinn, is set in inner-city Dublin in 1984, in a public housing estate where one family fights for survival amid a heroin epidemic that has ravaged the city, through the eyes of an 11-year-old wannabe detective.

Lyndsey Marshal in Restless (2024)
Restless Review – Glasgow Film Festival 2025
Lyndsey Marshal in Restless (2024)
Nothing quite prepares you for the anxiety inducing, gripping portrayal of a persons descent into madness than what we see unfold in Restless.

It is easily one of the highlights of the Glasgow Film Festival where it gets its European premiere and is one of the 10 nominated films for this year’s Audience Award.

Once it gets going it is pretty much relentless and at the helm is writer and director Jed Hart. He is clearly more than adept at bringing to life how an assuming, quiet, social care worker can be driven to the edge and this is where we meet Nicky (Lyndsey Marshal).

A story that seems fairly ordinary of an empty-nester enduring a hellish new neighbour Dean (Aston McAuley) who blast music each night quickly becomes much more. McAuley does so well in playing the agitator who knows the right buttons to push and does so with great relish.

Restless - Jennie Kermode - 19563
To those who haven’t experienced it, nuisance noise can sound like a trivial thing, something that only those with comfortable lives and far too much time on their hands would make a fuss about. In fact, it’s a problem which can be overwhelming, with seriously detrimental effects not just on sleep but on mental health and even cardiovascular health. For thousands of people every year, it’s not just a case of being annoyed by the occasional party, but of having to endure something that starts every day and carries on into the small hours, making it hard to think straight, intruding into the home so that there’s nowhere one can go to feel safe and relax. It can create the kind of trauma that stays with people for years.

If you have experienced this, you’ll find Jed Hart’s thriller a difficult watch. He doesn’t turn up the volume,...

Rufus Sewell and Hayley Atwell in Restless (2012)
“I think someone is moving in next door…” First trailer drops for thriller ‘Restless’
Rufus Sewell and Hayley Atwell in Restless (2012)
Metis Films has debuted the first trailer for the thriller ‘Restless,’ an edge-of-your-seat thriller that explores a topic we’ve all been subjected to in our lives: nasty neighbours. The quiet life of an empty nester is turned upside down in the blink of an eye when hard-partying – and potentially dangerous – new neighbours move in next door.

Mild-mannered care home worker Nicky works long hours, and between shifts lives an isolated life listening to classical music and watching snooker. When Dean moves in next door, he shatters her routines with late-night parties and music booming through the thin connecting wall. Nicky decides her only option is to confront him – but it quickly becomes clear that violence is a very real possibility.

With no help from the authorities or her scared neighbours, Nicky discovers a new side to herself. Desperate for sleep, Nicky begins to take dangerous and increasingly erratic actions...

This year’s BIFA nominations have been unveiled and it’s a delightfully diverse group of great films. More on those below.
