Every so often, the entertainment world has the pleasure of being reintroduced to Sherlock Holmes. Whether through the two theatrical renditions headlined by Robert Downey Jr. in the 2010s or the BBC small-screen version made famous by Benedict Cumberbatch, the timeless character always finds a way to step in front of audiences. The iconic name might have been introduced well over 100 years ago now, but that doesn’t mean the man's popularity is any closer to winding down. With Elementary on CBS (a more modern version of the well-known sleuth) ending in 2019 — that is, after seven seasons and 154 episodes — the cable network channel seemed to have finally found a promising replacement.

The series premiere had a few twists and turns, mainly the reveal of Watson's antagonist. Craig Sweeney, the show's creator, sat down with Deadline to talk about the surprising casting as well as the comparison to another Holmes-inspired medical drama.

In the first episode of CBS's new medical mystery Watson, the ending revealed a surprising choice for an actor to play the series' villain. Randall Park, an actor who's normally known for playing friendly roles, adds a chill to his acting as he plays Watson's main villain, Moriarty.

Watson is loosely based on the Sherlock Holmes stories, with Watson (played by Morris Chestnut) working in a hospital in Philadelphia after the death of the famous detective. The series modernizes the Sherlock Holmes characters, years after Elementary did the same thing. Audiences can catch new episodes of the show on Mondays starting February 16, or on Paramount+.

With CBS poised to unveil its mysterious new medical series Watson on Sunday, January 26, 2025, it's worth wondering how the release schedule will work around Superbowl Lix on February 9th. Longtime movie and TV veteran Morris Chestnut depicts John Watson, modernizing the classic literary character by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who famously accompanied Sherlock Holmes in criminal investigations.

13 episodes are slated for Watson Season 1, with weekly episodes airing each Sunday. While the release will remain fairly consistent throughout, Superbowl Lix will inevitably alter at least one episode's release. The film brought to life through virtual environments, comprised of elaborate 360-degree digital matte paintings, centers on a desperate gambler wrongfully accused of murder who flees through a post-apocalyptic frontier, with a vengeful Marshal doggedly hunting him down, on a bloody quest to bring order to the chaos.
