Gregg Doyel, a sports reporter from the Indianapolis Star, has been met with consequences from the news outlet and its owners, Gannett, after an uncomfortable incident with basketball prodigy Caitlin Clark.
The disciplinary action comes after the Indiana Fever picked Clark as the number one in the WNBA draft and embarked on their new season.
Former Star reporter Bob Kravitz revealed that Doyel had been suspended for two weeks after his exchange with Clark at her introductory press conference with the Indiana Fever on April 17.
As per Kravitz’s report, Doyel will continue contributing columns on the Fever throughout the season. However, he will not attend any team’s games or post-game press conferences alongside players. Instead, Doyel will watch the games from the comfort of his own home.

It was supposed to be a uniformly joyous occasion. The 22-year-old college hoops phenom and overall No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, Caitlin Clark, was being introduced to the media and fans of the Indiana Fever, which had drafted her. Then came a back and forth with longtime Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel.
Doyel began the interaction by mirroring the heart-shaped gesture that Clark makes on court in recognition of her family.
“You like that?” Clark asked him with a smile.
“I like that you’re here. I like that you’re here,” replied Doyel.
“Yeah, I do that to my family after every game. Pretty cool,” stated Clark.
“Well, start doing it to me, and we’ll get along just fine,” said Doyel.
Later that same day, Doyel wrote a mea culpa in which he called his behavior “creepy,” and saying he had acted from “ignorance.”
He continued, “In my haste to be clever,...

The Indiana Fever introduced Caitlin Clark as their newest superstar, but things didn’t go as smoothly as one might hope. One reporter who covered the event said something to the basketball star that he admitted later was highly “inappropriate.” He has since apologized, but many fans are not letting it go.
Here is what the reporter said and how the fans reacted to the comment.
Reporter Makes Heart-Shaped Hand Sign To Caitlin Clark
When the Indiana Fever introduced Caitlin Clark as their new first-round draft pick, it celebrated her arrival into professional athletics. The idea is that Clark will become one of the most impactful women in the WNBA and might shine a light on the women’s league. However, one moment during her press conference was inappropriate and uncomfortable.

Just days after President Joe Biden decried the wage disparity between female and male athletes, Whoopi Goldberg said on ABC’s The View that ESPN should “sweeten” its deal for the broadcast rights of WNBA games.
After pointing out the Clark will make an initial annual salary of $76,535 as a player for the Indiana Fever, Goldberg then noted, “The entire Fever payroll is $1.2 million. That is less than the minimum salary for a single NBA player with a year’s experience.”
The women players, Goldberg continued, “have the headlines, they have the fans, they have the viewers, when the hell are they going to get paid?” Noting that ESPN and ABC are both part of the “Disney thing,” Goldberg added that ESPN “should have kissed this deal by taking care of all of the WNBA and given them enough money for a bump up because you know you have another deal to make.
