Imagine a post-apocalyptic world where fossil fuels like petrol, diesel, and other internal combustion derivatives are no longer available. Everyone drives electric vehicles. Aliens have invaded this world. The state has complete control over what people do, eat, drink, and even think. To top it all off, an alien. Who appears as a girl, lives with a few bachelors, hiding away from the government. Where would a film like this be made? Hollywood, maybe? The concept clearly fits the mold previously laid out by other Hollywood films. Or perhaps Bollywood? But no, it’s a Mollywood film called Gaganachari. Yes, it’s a Malayalam-language film. The concept is high, but the budget was low. Yet, it doesn’t look cheap. It’s really impressive what they managed to do with the resources they had.

Sherlock Holmes-inspired detective films have been plentiful, with different interpretations of Holmes and Watson. In “Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse,” Gautham Vasudev Menon takes on the classic Sherlock Holmes detective saga and spins a story around the duo in his style that sometimes lands and sometimes doesn’t. But for the times it does, Mammootty deserves major credit for making it feel alive and kicking.

It is a detective drama where a voluntarily retired cop who runs a detective agency to solve immaterial and silly cases to meet his daily needs meets a filthy rich (in Dominic’s own words) young man, Vikky who wishes to assist him. If what drives Vikky is his interest in true crime, detective movies, and noir thrillers, not having to pay him aplenty is why Dominic hires him. Initially, wide-eyed Vikky gets to know Dominic through his own words where he boasts about his high-profile investigation victories.

The streaming platform shared the news on its social media handles on Monday, September 25, 2023.
