Complete Unseen: New Doc on History of Newport Folk Festival Announced
Image
For anyone who saw A Complete Unknown and wondered how close it resembled the actual Newport Folk Festival where Bob Dylan amped up his music, a new documentary will help answer that question.

Among the many films just announced as part of the annual Venice Film Festival in September is Newport & the Great Folk Dream, which documents the legendary (and ongoing) festival in the pivotal folk-to-rock years between 1963 and 1966. The doc includes footage of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band — some of it from the same...

Margo Price Pays Homage to Bob Dylan in ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ Video
Image
In the spring of 1965, Bob Dylan stood in an alley by London’s Savoy Hotel and practically invented the music video by flipping through cue cards displaying words from “Subterranean Homesick Blues” while the song played. Fifty years later, Margo Price is paying homage to the historic clip in the video for her new single “Don’t Wake Me Up” from her upcoming album Hard Headed Woman.

Price takes the “Don’t Wake Me Up” cue cards on a journey to a bowling alley parking lot, a lush field, a dive bar,...

Dillon Warnek, a Wry Nashville Songwriter, Wants to Be Your Sizzling Plate of Fajitas
Image
One night near the tail end of 2021, I received a text from Dillon Warnek. I didn’t recognize the number, a Washington state area code, or the name, but he said he was a songwriter here in Nashville with a record coming out, and that Margo Price and Jeremy Ivey played on it.

“I only bring that up so that you know that I at least have other crazy people vouching for my craziness,” Dillon wrote.

I appreciated the hustle, and the postscript of his text — that he was really...

‘We Just Made It Up!’: Robert Randolph Announces Wild-Style Solo Album
Image
Talking with Rolling Stone last year, Robert Randolph recalled the unusual complaint he received when he was working on a new album in LA. Apparently, the bass amplifier he and producer Shooter Jennings had placed in a hallway was too loud, and a couple of people in the building — T Bone Burnett and Robbie Robertson — told a receptionist it was too loud. As Randolph said, Robertson walked into the studio and said, “Oh, that’s you down here? You guys are getting funky in here.”

Robertson, who passed away last year,...

Willie Nelson’s 2025 Luck Reunion Was Like No Place on Earth
Image
“Everybody’s just in the best mood and it gets better and better throughout the day,” I overheard a fan say Thursday afternoon at the 2025 Luck Reunion. His observation was spot-on. For its 13th year, the boutique festival held on Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch in Spicewood, Texas — just outside of Austin, as the song goes — proved to be unlike any music fest on earth.

With stages set up in and around the Old West buildings that dot the grounds, a movie set where Nelson filmed his 1984 Western Red Headed Stranger,...

SXSW: Magnolia Buys Music Documentary ‘Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted’ (Exclusive)
Image
Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted,” a documentary about singer, songwriter and record producer Jerry Williams, aka Swamp Dogg, following the film’s world premiere at SXSW. The movie, which examines one of the major cult figures of 20th-century American music, was directed by Isaac Gale and Ryan Olson. It will be released in theaters on May 2.

Swamp Dogg’s voice and ideas had a profound influence on soul music, country, hip-hop and a dozen other genres. The film follows Swamp Dogg and his “bachelor pad of aging musicians”, a group that includes the disarming Guitar Shorty and the quirky Moogstar, as they navigate the music industry, transform their home into an artistic playground and invite fellow musicians like Jenny Lewis and John Prine and superfans Mike Judge, Johnny Knoxville and Tom Kenny to play in their unique musical sandbox. The group,...

Southern Rock Is Rising From the Ashes

The American South is a hot mess of cultural contradictions, and while those contradictions have stoked the dumpster fire of U.S. politics for a couple of centuries, they also happen to be fueling some of the best music being made right now. On two of the year’s best records, Tigers Blood and Manning Fireworks, Katie “Waxahatchee” Crutchfield (Alabama) and Jake “Mj” Lenderman (North Carolina), respectively, made...

Willie Nelson Sets Cannabis Community Call In Support Of Kamala Harris

With less than three weeks until Election Day, Willie Nelson is lighting one up for Vice President Kamala Harris.

On Saturday, the 15x Grammy winner announced a community Zoom call “emphasizing the importance of cannabis reform in America,” in support of the Democratic nominee and running mate Tim Walz, which he’ll host virtually with wife Annie D’Angelo on Oct. 24 at 7pm from his Luck Ranch in Texas.

“I’m excited to bring together such an amazing group of people to talk about something we all care about deeply,” said Nelson in a statement. “Cannabis is a path to healing, opportunity, and justice, and supporting leaders like Kamala Harris who understand that is crucial to putting an end to the federal prohibition and undoing the harms it caused to so many, particularly to communities of color where it has been disproportionately enforced.”

Nelson’s virtual smoking circle will also include Whoopi Goldberg,...

His relationship with Scorsese went back to the 1970s, when Scorsese directed “The Last Waltz,” the 1978 star-studded concert film commemorating The Band’s final performance. Robertson then worked as a composer, music supervisor, or consultant on many of Scorsese’s films, including “Raging Bull,” “The Color of Money,” “Casino,” and “The Irishman.

YouTube Pulls Classic Nirvana, Adele, Bob Dylan Videos Amid Copyright Dispute [Updated]
Image
Update: YouTube and Sesac have come to terms on a new deal. “Content (that was previously blocked) will be restored across YouTube services over the next day or two,” YouTube said in a statement on Monday night.

Hundreds of classic music videos and songs by Nirvana, Adele, Bob Dylan, Kendrick Lamar, Green Day, and hundreds more are currently unavailable on YouTube amid a copyright dispute between the video platform and the performance rights organization, Sesac.

A YouTube spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, that the site and Sesac were “unable to reach an equitable agreement” before the expiration of their copyright deal.

“We take copyright very seriously and as a result, content represented by Sesac is no longer available on YouTube in the US,” the spokesperson said. “We are in active conversations with Sesac and are hoping to reach a new deal as soon as possible.”

With ‘Highway Prayers’ Billy Strings Doubles Down on the Art of the Song
Image
It’s been wild to watch the rise of William Apostol, a.k.a. Billy Strings, a bluegrass prodigy turned crossover star like fellow genre travelers Alison Krauss and Chris Stapleton — but one who’s found a home in Jambandlandia, where his super-sick flatpicking guitar virtuosity has met with big fat dancing bear-hugs. Leaning into long instrumental journeys onstage (see last year’s 38-minute single, an epic live sequence of “Meet Me at the Creek” > “Pyramid Country” > “Must Be Seven” > “Meet Me at the Creek”), Strings’ original songs have proved solid jam vehicles.

At the sold-out event at Broadview Stage at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, a diverse group of farmers and food producers shared the ways they work in their communities to develop a more democratic farm and food system that is healthy, safe, equitable and accessible. What they say they need is more support from our country’s eaters, as well as from our elected representatives in local, state and federal government.

Farm Aid's leadership and artist board members Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Dave Matthews and Margo Price highlighted the resilience and generosity of these producers, calling on the country to harness our collective strength to counter corporate dominance in our food system.

Image
Margo Price has linked up with Billy Strings for a brand new song, “Too Stoned to Cry.” Stream the collaboration below.

Boasting vocal performances from both Price and Strings, “Too Stoned to Cry” is a twangy, tear-in-your-beer country ballad about, well, being too high to properly express your emotions. “I ain’t happy, I’m just too stoned to cry,” they sing over lap steel guitar, plotting drums, piano, and String’s characteristically bluegrass-tinged guitar playing.

Some of the most illustrious names in rock — and other genres — will pay tribute to Robbie Robertson in a celebratory concert at the L.A.-area Kia Forum on Oct. 17, with the musician’s longtime friend and collaborator Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.

The lineup for “Life Is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” includes some contemporaries who came up with the Band’s late songwriter-guitarist in the ’60s.
