Will Ferrell Says Fans ‘Were Not Too Happy’ About Buddy the Elf Smoking and Thought: ‘Please Be True to the Character. That Was Not Cool’
Image
Will Ferrell recently told People magazine that some of his fans were not too thrilled with his decision to revive Buddy the Elf as a grizzled drinker and smoker. The comedian went viral on social media after attending the Dec. 29 hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers in his Buddy the Elf costume, only he added a beer in hand and a cigarette dangling from his mouth.

“Some people were not too happy, though,” Ferrell told the magazine. “They thought, ‘Please be true to the character. That was not cool.’ Buddy was having a bad day. Yeah. He just went to a hockey game, smoked cigarettes and drank beer.”

Ferrell’s appearance at the Kings game initially went viral due to FanDuel Sports Network broadcaster Carrlyn Bathe, who reported live from the game and spoke to Buddy. The character told her at the time that “it was...

An Underrated Will Ferrell Sci-Fi Adventure Movie Is Coming to Hulu Next Month
Image
Will Ferrell is sucked into a space-time vortex in the 2009 movie Land of the Lost, a take on the classic 1974 Sid and Marty Krofft TV series. Ferrell plays scientist Rick Marshall in the film that can be streamed on Hulu on Feb. 1. It also stars Anna Friel as Rick’s assistant, Holly Cantrell, and Danny McBride as a survivalist named Will Stanton as they are thrust into a world that’s populated by dinosaurs and reptile-like creatures called Skeestaks.

The film was a box office flop earning just over $68 million worldwide against a budget of $100 million, per Box Office Mojo, and it has a 26% Rotten Tomatoes score. Ferrell’s Rick Marshall is the founder of something called “quantum paleontology” and his career takes a dive after a less-than-stellar interview with former Today host Matt Lauer, who plays himself in the movie.

'Buddy the Elf Got Laid Off': Will Ferrell Explains His Viral Appearance Looking Rough as Elf Character
Image
Will Ferrell turned heads at the end of 2024 when the actor appeared at a Los Angeles Kings NHL game as one of his most beloved characters, Buddy the Elf. Although he looked a little worse for wear at the Dec. 29, 2024, hockey game than he did in the 2003 movie, Elf, with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and a five o’clock shadow, Ferrell was instantly recognizable as Buddy. Now, per Variety, the actor is opening up about the viral stunt.

“Buddy the Elf got laid off, I think from the North Pole,” joked Ferrell in an appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast. “He’s having a pull from his beer, smoking a cig. That was just…I get these weird ideas every now and then. We’re season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass. I told my wife,...

Will Ferrell Finally Explains Bringing Buddy the Elf Back as a Smoker and Beer Drinker, Calls the Reaction ‘Insane’: ‘I Just Like to Do Weird Things’
Image
Will Ferrell appeared on Jason and Travis Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast and finally explained his decision to revive Buddy the Elf as a disheveled beer drinker and smoker. The comedian went viral across social media for dressing as his iconic “Elf” character while attending the Dec. 29 hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. Only this iteration of Buddy came with a cigarette dangling from his mouth and a beer in hand.

“Buddy the Elf got laid off, I think, from the North Pole,” Ferrell joked in his first time talking about the viral moment. “He’s having a pull from his beer, smoking a cig. That was just…I get these weird ideas every now and then. We’re season ticket holders for the L.A. Kings. We have seats right on the glass. I told my wife, ‘Over the break, it would be funny if I...

Will Ferrell returns as Buddy the Elf to spread holiday cheer during a “tough holiday season”
Image
Last Updated on January 2, 2025

Will Ferrell is aware of what a rough year it’s been. While some celebrities refuse to relinquish their mask during the holiday season, smiling for the cameras despite personal hardships and world-weariness, the former Saturday Night Live performer takes a different approach to summoning his Christmas spirit. On December 29, Ferrell dressed as Buddy the Elf (from Jon Favreau’s 2003 Christmas comedy Elf) while attending a hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. However, instead of screaming through New York streets and eating cotton balls by the fistful, Ferrell is sporting a wicked scowl and a five o’clock shadow as an unlit cigarette dangles from his mouth.

Will Ferrell Attends Hockey Game as Buddy the Elf After “Tough Holiday Season”
Image
Will Ferrell has officially made it canon that Buddy the Elf is a fan of the Los Angeles Kings. On Sunday, the actor attended the hockey team’s game with the Philadelphia Flyers while dressed as his character from 2003’s Elf, looking quite worn out from the Christmas season.

Sitting in the stands with his wife and son, Ferrell came decked in a green suit and pointy hat. However, it was quite clear this was a different Buddy than the one he portrayed in the Jon Favreau comedy. Besides sporting a five o’clock shadow, Ferrell dangled a faux cigarette from his mouth and was also spotted drinking a beer.

While speaking to FanDuel Sports Network broadcaster Carrlyn Bathe, Ferrell further committed to the bit by telling her that “it was a tough holiday season” and saying he was “looking for a Kings win.” With a 5-4 victory, the Kings fulfilled Buddy’s wish.

'It Was a Tough Holiday Season': Will Ferrell Spotted in Buddy the Elf Costume (With a Cigarette)
Image
It seems like even Buddy the Elf is over the holiday season this year. Clad in his iconic costume from 2003’s Elf, Will Ferrell attended the Dec. 29 NHL game between the Los Angeles Kings and the Philadelphia Flyers. However, “Buddy” looked a bit different from the cheerful Elf persona with an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth, messy hair, and a five o’clock shadow on his face.

Per Variety, Ferrell (who is a fan of the Kings), as Buddy, spoke to FanDuel Sports Network’s Carrlyn Bathe, who was reporting live from the hockey game. “It was a tough holiday season,” Buddy told Bathe, adding that he's "looking for a Kings win.”

Both IndieWire and Culture Crave posted photos on the social media site X of Ferrell in full Elf gear at the game, which can be seen below.

Will Ferrell Went to a Hockey Game as Disheveled Buddy the Elf After a ‘Tough Holiday’
Image
2024 was a rough year for a lot of folks, and one particular figure, most associated with irrepressible hope and joy, appears to have borne the brunt of it: Buddy the Elf, who showed up to a hockey game in Los Angeles this weekend looking extremely haggard and bedraggled.

On Sunday, Dec. 29, Will Ferrell went to see his beloved Los Angeles Kings play the Philadelphia Flyers, all dressed up in a green-and-yellow ensemble like the one he wore in Jon Favreau’s hit 2003 Christmas movie, Elf. But rather than sporting a...

Will Ferrell Dresses Up as Buddy the Elf With a Cigarette, Tells Reporter ‘It Was a Tough Holiday Season’
Image
Buddy the Elf is back…although not like anyone could imagine. Will Ferrell unexpectedly dressed up as his iconic character from Jon Favreau’s 2003 Christmas comedy “Elf” while attending the Dec. 29 hockey game between the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers. Only this iteration of Buddy was looking quite disheveled with five o’clock shadow and a faux cigarette in his mouth.

Ferrell is fan of the Los Angeles Kings and regularly attends their games, but never as Buddy the Elf. FanDuel Sports Network broadcaster Carrlyn Bathe reported live from the game and spoke to Buddy, who told her that “it was a tough holiday season” and “he’s looking for a Kings win.”

“Elf,” which earned over $220 million at the worldwide box office at the time of its release and remains a Christmas classic, stars Ferrell as a human raised by Santa’s elves. He travels to New York...
