Review: NCIS Season 21, Episode 4 Has Many Twists, Little Time
Image
The following contains spoilers for NCIS Season 21, Episode 4, "Left Unsaid," which debuted Monday, March 4 on CBS.

Equal parts action, drama, crime and comedy, NCIS can still command an audience after more than two decades. The series has shown no signs of slowing down. Season 21, Episode 4, "Left Unsaid" offers one of the most complicated, rapid-fire, yet satisfying and subversive storylines to date. Directed by NCIS: Los Angeles star Daniela Ruah, “Left Unsaid,” involves a dramatic missing person case when a wedding proposal goes wrong.

When a Petty Officer goes missing in Shenandoah National Park before he can finish proposing, his blindfolded would-be fianceé is less than impressed. But the prospective groom’s disappearance is worse than just a case of cold feet. NCIS finds the abandoned $20,000 engagement ring, and that's just the beginning of an almost over-stuffed episode.

On the Bubble 2021: Which Broadcast TV Shows Will Be Canceled and Which Will Be Renewed?
Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kenneth Choi, Peter Krause, Aisha Hinds, Oliver Stark, and Ryan Guzman in 9-1-1 (2018)
With (virtual) upfronts on the horizon, there are still several coin-flips

After getting back to a certain level of normalcy a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, there is one thing more certain now than ever for broadcast networks: April TV ratings bring May cancellations and last-minute renewals, too. But in the “new normal” that the coronavirus has delivered us over the 2020-2021 season, there’s more uncertainty about which broadcast shows will stay and which will go than in years past.

Fox, CBS, ABC, NBC and The CW all still have several decisions to make before their upfront presentations to advertisers later this month, events that will once again be virtual, and some networks have many more tough calls to make than others. And the comedies and dramas that are real coin-flips at this point are considered “bubble shows.”

Setting aside the pandemic’s effects on broadcast network’s 2021-2022 slate choices for a moment,...

The Christmas Edition Review: She Left Her Job in San Diego ... and Found Her Heart in Juneau!
Marie Osmond, Rob Mayes, and Carly Hughes in The Christmas Edition (2020)
Jackie may have left a career opportunity in San Diego, but she found her passion, family, and love in Juneau.

What is it about small towns at Christmas that makes for the best Holiday films that give you all the feels?

By the end of The Christmas Edition, I wanted to pack my bags, move to Juneau, and immerse myself in their little community and hell, join the Lantern Grove Press, too.

The Christmas Edition had magic, love, community, finding one's passion, and a dose of adventure. You can't ask for anything more with a classic holiday film.

From the beginning to the end, the film was feel-good.

The credit goes to a lovely story, endearing characters, and leads that kept you glued to the screen. Carly Hughes, formerly of American Housewife, shined as Jackie.

Jackie was stylish, passionate, and she was willing to try new things. I admired that quality about her.

‘American Housewife’ Actress Carly Hughes Exits Show, Blames ‘Toxic Environment’ on Set
Carly Hughes
Carly Hughes has left “American Housewife,” citing a “toxic environment” on the ABC sitcom’s set.

Hughes, the only Black series regular on the show, raised concerns to Hr that have “led to positive changes to the workplace and improvements to the culture,” a spokesman for the show told TheWrap.

“I was no longer able to work in the toxic environment that was created on ‘American Housewife,'” Hughes said in a statement. “I made the decision to leave to protect myself from that type of discrimination. As a black woman in entertainment, I feel the responsibility to stand up for what I deserve, what we all deserve — to be treated equally. I wish the show well, and I am excited for a new chapter and to be able to pursue the opportunities ahead.”

Following an investigation into Hughes’ complaints, creator Sarah Dunn stopped being an active producer on the show,...

The sitcom centers on Katie Otto (Mixon), a confident and unconventional mother from the wealthy town of Westport, Connecticut. Together, they try to make sure that their three kids -- headstrong Taylor (Donnelly), snarky Oliver (Dimaggio), and obsessive-compulsive Anna-Kat (Eisenberg) -- understand their family's old-fashioned values, so they don't end up carbon copies of their neighbors.

Holiday Movies Coming to Television in 2020
Image
Christmas might not be until December, but some networks are slapping on their mittens and gearing up for the holiday season as early as October.

Families often find themselves gathered around the TV binging some of Hallmark or Lifetime’s latest Christmas-themed films, and this year is no exception. With people around the country encouraged to stay indoors and avoid crowded locations, Variety breaks down a list of feel-good Christmas movies to tune into this year.

As part of Lifetime’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” holiday movie slate, the channel will premiere 30 original TV movies beginning Oct. 23 and running through mid-December. In its efforts to diversify the stories it showcases, Lifetime said it worked with GLAAD and Cape (Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment) for its first-ever LGBTQ-led film “The Christmas Setup” and “A Sugar & Spice Holiday” centering on an Asian American family.

More films will be added to the list as networks announce them.

American Housewife had originally received a 15-episode order, which will now go up to 21 episodes and the show’s total to 97 episodes. The pickup is a vote of confidence to the comedy, which has been an utility player for ABC over the years and a solid Friday anchor this fall.

Bless This Mess was a midseason entry last season, so its Season 2 order was for 13 episodes. The back order brings that up to 19.

“Bless This Mess has quickly become a fan favorite, due in large part to the expert wit of co-creators Lake Bell and Elizabeth Meriwether, and our incredibly talented and charismatic cast,” said ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke. “This series exquisitely captures a witty and warm...

‘American Housewife’ and ‘American Idol’ to Air Crossover Episode in March
ABC’s “American Housewife” and “American Idol” are airing a crossover episode in March, the network announced Tuesday at the Television Critics Association press tour.

The “American Housewife” episode, which is semi-confusingly titled “American Idol,” is set for Tuesday, March 19 at 8/7c. It will include guest spots from “Idol” judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest.

“American Housewife’s” “American Idol” follows Taylor’s (Meg Donnelly) dream of becoming a musical superstar, per ABC. Parents Katie (Katy Mixon) and Greg (Diedrich Bader) are skeptical when Taylor announces she will use her college fund to travel to Los Angeles, audition for “American Idol,” wow the judges and become an overnight sensation — but Taylor’s passion is undeniable.

The episode was written by Jordan Roter and directed by John Putch. It won’t be the lone musical episode of this third season of “Housewife.”
