In 29 days, Maa earned 38.63 crore net in India. Including taxes, the gross earnings concluded at 45.58 crores.

Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa promised to be this horror/thriller that makes use of mythological narratives and Indian folklore, but it wasn’t able to leave any kind of impact. I won’t deny that the story had a lot of potential, had it been executed properly. Bad execution and even worse creative choices made Maa a pretty forgettable affair. Let’s find out what happened in the film, and if Ambika was able to save her daughter from the wrath of a demon.

At the beginning of the film, we were taken to a small village, Chandrapur, in West Bengal, where a bunch of people had gathered in a huge mansion to celebrate the festival of Durga Pooja. One could sense animosity in the air as people were not happy that a female priestess was given the charge to lead the pooja.

Before delving into the connection between Maa and Shaitaan, I just want to say that Vash is better than both of them and handles the theme of sexual abuse with much more nuance than its remake and the spin-off of said remake. So, if you liked either of those 2 Bollywood films or were even mildly intrigued by their premise, you should go and watch the Gujarati movie before its sequel, Vash: Level 2, arrives in theaters on August 27, 2025 (this is not a paid promotion), and then watch that as well. You can thank me later. Anyway, coming back to the land of Hindi movies, yes, Maa is connected to Shaitaan. I thought that just because Ajay Devgn had done a horror film, his wife, Kajol, also wanted to do one. I didn’t know that they were planning a shared universe (which the internet is calling the “Beti Bachao” Cinematic Universe) and whatnot.

I mean, India as a country is a trove of stories. We are so rich when it comes to culture and literature, but for unknown reasons, the filmmakers just abstain from tapping into that treasure. Chhorii 2 had the potential of being a good film, but the mundane plot and the ineffective conflicts made the film an underwhelming affair. Directed by Vishal Furia and based on a Marathi film named Lapachhapi, Chhorii is one of the better horror films to come out of the Hindi film industry. The film personified the horrors of real life and wove them into a suspenseful narrative. That said, I didn’t like the way the plot unfolded and how things came to such a convenient end, maybe because the first half of the film really set my expectations high. I hope that Chhorii 2, which is all set to premiere this Friday, lives up to the hype and is able to meet the expectations of the audience.
