While less common today, the Western genre holds a key position in American media history. Some of Hollywood and television's earliest hits fell within the genre's remit, turning characters like the Lone Ranger, Angel Eyes, and Chris Adams into household names. Even today, the genre is still massively influential, with many shows and movies drawing inspiration from Westerns and presenting updated and modernized versions of the genre's most famous characters and tropes.

The anime medium is no exception, as hundreds of anime movies have drawn inspiration from Westerns. While many of these stories are not set on the American frontier of old, they use the Western genre's tropes, plot beats, and characters to tell stories that uniquely capture the genre's spirit.

In 1988, blood pumped hot on Broadway when a musical adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie splashed across the stage. Created and composed by Dean Pitchford, Michael Gore, and Og Carrie screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen, the musical was big on ideas but low on white-glove appeal — after a brief run in the U.K., it closed on Broadway after just 16 previews and five regular performances. Critics had a field day ripping the show to shreds and in 1991 it found itself the centerpiece of a book about Broadway flops. Poor Carrie, a laughingstock all over again.
