“A Dangerous Ideology”: Former Egyptian Footballer Mohamed Aboutrika Delivers Homophobic Rant On BeIN Sports
Image
A former Egyptian footballer has described homosexuality as being “against humanity” and a “dangerous ideology that is becoming nasty” during a rant on Qatari network beIN Sports.

Mohamed Aboutrika, who played 100 times for Egypt from 2001 to 2013, was responding to a question last weekend on the UK Premier League’s Rainbow Laces campaign, which has seen the likes of fellow Egyptian Muslim and Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah take part in a bid to stamp out homophobia in football.

During the two-minute rant, Aboutrika issued a string of slurs against homosexuality.

“This phenomenon is not only against Muslim nature but it’s against human nature,” he said. “Allah says in the Quran that we have to honor the children of Adam but by doing this homosexuality we are not honoring humans, we are humiliating them.”

BeIN acknowledged the comments, which were made in Arabic and translated online, but did not publicly condemn them or the presenter.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes in Shakespeare in Love (1998)
ViacomCBS said on Friday that it has finalized its acquisition of a 49% stake in film and TV studio Miramax.

Approximately $150 million was paid at closing, while ViacomCBS has committed to invest $225 million — comprised of $45 million annually over the next five years — to be used for new film and television productions and working capital.

“This represents a major investment in and endorsement of our thriving Miramax business, which has grown in value under beIN Media Group’s ownership and has a fantastic future ahead with major new movies and unexploited premium dramas,” beIN Media Group Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with ViacomCBS and Paramount to...

ViacomCBS Taking 49% Stake In Miramax For $375M
3rd Update, Friday Am: It’s official now. ViacomCBS will take a 49% stake in beIN Media’s Miramax library for a total of $375M. This includes an upfront cash payment of roughly $150M per beIN along with a commitment of $45M annually over the next five years or $225M which will be used for new film/TV development. The deal is expected to close by the end of 1Q next year and beIN will retain a 51% stake. I hear that the current Miramax leadership including CEO Bill Block will not change. ViacomCBS’ pursuit of Miramax fell apart in early November when the former shot off a letter of disinterest, but our sources speculated that was just a hardball tactic: A stake in the Miramax library was too valuable for the media conglom as they seek to be a provider of content in the booming streaming era where competing media conglom...

ViacomCBS to Acquire 49% Stake in Miramax for $375 Million
ViacomCBS has struck a deal to acquire 49% of Miramax for $375 million. Under the terms of the deal, beIN Media Group will maintain 51% — and thus, control. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2020.

That $375 million begins with an upfront cash payment of approximately $150 million. The remaining $225 million comes from a commitment to invest $45 million annually over the next five years, which will be used for new film and television productions as well as working capital.

As part of the pact, ViacomCBS’ Paramount Pictures has entered into an exclusive, long-term distribution agreement for Miramax’s film library, and can develop, produce, finance and distribute new film and television projects based on Miramax’s IP. ViacomCBS and beIN will explore other strategic partnership opportunities across content production and distribution, live events and recreation globally, the companies said on Friday.

Stx Punches For Guy Ritchie Crime-Comedy ‘Bush’ In Splashy $7M Deal, Efm 2019’s Biggest
Exclusive: In the biggest deal to emerge from the 2019 Efm, Stx has finalized a deal for U.S. rights to Guy Ritchie’s Miramax pic Bush — formerly known as Toff Guys — for around $7M.

Multiple suitors were in the mix for the star-studded crime-comedy, whose cast includes Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Colin Farrell, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding and Michelle Dockery. The deal was in the works in Berlin and has just been completed.

While the Efm was relatively sedate in comparison to a blockbuster Sundance, this is one of the biggest deals ever to come out of the Berlin market which wrapped last week. In 2016 Paramount paid around $10M for Suburbicon while TWC bought The Imitation Game for $7M in 2014.

Written by Ritchie with Marn Davies and Ivan Atkinson, Bush returns the Brit filmmaker to his Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch roots. But with a twist. Ritchie...

Miramax CEO Stephen Schoch to Step Down This Month
Miramax CEO Stephen Schoch is stepping down before the end of the year and will be replaced by chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi on an interim basis, the company announced Tuesday. Schoch has served as Miramax CEO since 2012, and previously worked as chief financial officer for two years before that. Disney, which had acquired Miramax from co-founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein in 1993, sold the indie unit to a group of investors for $660 million in 2010. BeIN Media Group, which is owned by Qatar’s Al Jazeera, then acquired the company in March of this year. Also Read: Margot Robbie Biopic About Tonya Harding Goes.

Miramax CEO Steven Schoch will leave the company this month. Schoch held that post since 2012, rising from CFO, a post he held since 2010. Nasser Al-Khelaifi will add interim CEO to his Chairman title while the company looks for Schoch’s replacement. Miramax chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, “I would like to thank Steven for his many years of leadership at Miramax and we wish him well for his future plans.”

Hatched by Harvey and Bob Weinstein in the late ’70s, Miramax was built by the siblings into a prestige film powerhouse. They sold it to Disney in 1993 and continued to build the library with Oscar-winning prestige titles. Disney kept it when the brothers exited in 2005, and it was sold to a consortium of investors. It is now fully owned by beIN Media Group. Its primary business is exploiting the library of nearly 800 titles (the company renewed its deal with Netflix in...

Miramax CEO Steven Schoch to depart
The senior executive will leave the company before the end of the year, it emerged on Tuesday.

Schoch has served as CEO since 2012 and prior to that was COO for two years at the company, which was fully acquired by Doha-based media and entertainment giant beIN earlier in the year.

Miramax and beIN Media Group chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who becomes interim CEO during the search for a replacement, said, “I would like to thank Steven for his many years of leadership at Miramax and we wish him well for his future plans.”

Schoch played a key role in rebuilding Miramax after Disney acquired it in 2010. Representatives for Miramax declined to say why the executive was departing.

The storied entertainment label has emerged as a strategic and tasteful content creator and distributor that continues to seek new ways to exploit a library of nearly 800 titles.

The catalogue includes Reservoir Dogs (pictured), which screens in all its restored glory at...
