Jimmy Fallon Couldn’t Have Pandered Any Harder for Relevancy Than He Did Last Night
Image
It’s very apparent that late-night shows are struggling to bring in younger viewers. Most young people I know are either out or asleep by 11 p.m. on weeknights, no in between. But beyond that, there’s a gap in relevancy. Late-night hosts used to be the bridge between celebrity and the public, power brokers and translators for the country’s most powerful and affluent people. Now, social media and podcasts are the primary mediators. Late-night hosts have to offer something those other platforms don’t have, and it’s clear they’re struggling to figure out what that is.

The only recent ray of hope for late-night ratings was Josh Johnson’s first hosting stint on The Daily Show. Clearly, a younger host can attract a younger audience. No matter how young and diverse a writers’ room is, if the person delivering the joke is an older white guy,...

John Oliver joins late-night in tearing into Trump’s Epstein past
Image
John Oliver made up for lost time as Last Week Tonight returned on Sunday, allowing the late-night TV host an opportunity to join his colleagues in covering the Donald Trump-Jeffrey Epstein story. And like the rest of late-night, Last Week Tonight isn't going to let this story go anytime soon.

Oliver was back on the air on July 27 after a month away. The comedian tried to catch up on all the stories he missed, including adding more commentary on Paramount's decision to cancel The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. But for Oliver, the biggest story was still President Donald Trump's history with Jeffrey Epstein.

Oliver's monologue highlighted how far Trump has gone to bury the story ... and how eager late-night TV is to keep digging it back up. Last Week Tonight responded to clips of Trump instructing Republicans to ignore any Epstein questions, with Oliver joking,...

‘The Daily Show’ Finally Has a Host Young People Will Watch
Image
Late-night television is struggling. We see it with Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, where CBS’ latest financial disclosures lead me to believe that someone on staff is setting money on fire every day as a pre-taping ritual. Whether Colbert is actually losing $40 million a year is really besides the point, in general late night is suffering a viewership crisis. The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart admitted as much earlier this week, calling the format the equivalent of a “Blockbuster kiosk inside of a Tower Records.”

But ironically, The Daily Show might be the first late-night program that actually hacked something that feels miraculous in a time when TikTok and short-form video content is frying Gen Z brain cells like electric mosquito traps in Florida. In fact, The Daily Show brought in new viewers this week in the 18-49 demographic.

How? They brought in a host under 40 years old who has a large internet following.

The Daily Show Gets A Brand New Host Amid Jon Stewart's Confession Of An Uncertain Future
Image
The Daily Show has appointed a brand-new host for the Tuesday through Thursday slot, despite Jon Stewart hinting at a possible cancellation for the show. The hugely successful talk show has run on Comedy Central since 1996, and Stewart had a long-term tenure as host from 1999 to 2015, after which he departed, before returning in 2024.

Despite the growth in viewership following Stewart's return, the host has intimated recently that The Daily Show could face the same cancellation fate as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. However, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the show, a new host of The Daily Show has just been appointed.

Per THR, Josh Johnson will take over the hosting gig for The Daily Show in the coming days. He previously worked as a writer for NBC's Tonight Show before becoming a correspondent on the Comedy Central series. He will join a host rotation of Ronny Chieng,...

My 10 Most Anticipated Films at FrightFest 2025
Image
The FrightFest London 2025 line-up has been announced, I’ve spent some time poring over the sixty-odd movies which will play there in August and, in the spirit of the growing excitement surrounding next month’s festivities, I’ve been asked to pick the ten movies I’m looking forward to the most.

Okay, I’ve picked eleven. Apologies, I’ve ruined the piece already. Anyway, on with my choices.

10 films we’re looking forward to at FrightFest 2025

1. Above the Knee

Viljar Bøe’s latest follows a man who is convinced his leg doesn’t belong to him and wants to cut it off. Bøe’s previous appearance at FrightFest in 2023 with Good Boy should give you more than a hint as to how dark this could get. I’m still immensely proud of appearing in the credits of that utterly warped relationship drama and I expect Above The Knee to...

Tribeca 2025 Review: The Degenerate: The Life And Films Of Andy Milligan, A Compassionate Portrait of a Complex Man
Image
There is no filmmaker quite like Andy Milligan. A connoisseur of the depraved and debaucherous, Milligan’s lot in life was troubled, but out of the pain he suffered beginning in his youth he managed to create a unique oeuvre that defies and defiles common decency at a level that is both shocking and admirable. The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan, the latest documentary from directors Josh Johnson (Rewind This!) and Grayson Tyler Johnson (Bob Morgan's Just Going to Tell Some Stories) digs deep into Milligan’s life and work in a way that presents the grindhouse regular as a kind of avant garde auteur, and to be frank, it’s a hard argument to refute. The filmmakers dig deep into Milligan’s past with the...

‘Daily Show’ Argues Trump Is Like the Villain of ‘Les Miz’ Ahead of Weekend Protests in LA, NYC | Video
Image
While reporting about the upcoming protests set to take place in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. this weekend, “The Daily Show’s” Michael Kosta and Jordan Klepper argued over which “Les Misérables” character Donald Trump is most like between Jean Valjean and Javert.

“These detention raids are a cruel display of Trump’s villainy. He’s definitely the Javert of our time,” Kosta chimed in first.

His opinion on the subject stemmed from recent interview Trump did while walking the red carpet for the Kennedy Center’s showing of the “Les Misérables” musical. While there, a reporter asked Trump if he identified more with Javert, the main antagonist in the story, or main protagonist Jean Valjean. His response? “I don’t know.”

Klepper chimed in, shutting down Kosta’s judgement and throwing some shade at his fellow “Daily Show” colleague while he was at it.

“The protesters in D.

Inside ‘The Daily Show’: The team behind the satirical news series on politics, puppies, punchlines — and staying sane
Image
Since its debut in 1996, The Daily Show has been a cornerstone of political satire and late-night comedy. Under Jon Stewart’s iconic leadership from 1999 to 2015, it evolved into a cultural phenomenon that reshaped how America engages with the news. After Stewart stepped down from his daily hosting duties, Trevor Noah took over the news desk. Following Noah’s departure, Stewart made a return in 2024 as a weekly guest host on Mondays, joining a dynamic team of rotating hosts — Jordan Klepper, Desi Lydic, Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta — and correspondents Troy Iwata, Josh Johnson and Grace Kuhlenschmidt. Each brings their own sharp perspective to the desk and in the field, continuing the show’s tradition of blending humor with hard-hitting commentary. The Daily Show won two 2024 Emmy Awards for Best Talk Series and Best Picture Editing for Variety Programming from seven nominations, as well as the 2023 Emmy Award for Best Talk Series.

‘Game Changer’ (‘Crowd Control’) Episode Recap: Stand-Up Comics Gianmarco Soresi, Josh Johnson and Jeff Arcuri Tackle White Shirts and Red Flags
Image
Spoiler alert: Details follow for Season 7, Episode 4 of “Game Changer,” which premiered May 19 on Dropout.

There’s no such thing as a typical episode of “Game Changer.”

However, in Season 7, Episode 4 — aptly titled “Crowd Control” — the chaos wasn’t just allowed; it was actively summoned. Filmed for the first time in front of a live studio audience, the Dropout original didn’t merely break the fourth wall — it obliterated it, interviewed it, and then asked if it regretted its neck tattoo.

Hosted by Dropout CEO Sam Reich, the episode opens in stark black-and-white with an ominous jazz drumbeat, evoking a Birdman-esque aesthetic that signals to longtime fans: this is not your standard studio taping. The mood quickly shifts as Reich introduces the episode’s contestants — stand-up comedians Jeff Arcuri, Gianmarco Soresi and Josh Johnson — all visibly bracing for the unpredictable storm ahead.

‘The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan’ Documents Exploitation Trailblazer [Trailer]
Image
The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan explores the bile, brutality, and intermittent brilliance of Andy Milligan, a pioneer of avant-garde theater, trailblazer of early Queer cinema, and one of the most divisive talents in exploitation history.

The documentary will premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on June 11.

Severin Films and Monocular Films have released the trailer and poster for the film, directed by Josh Johnson (Rewind This!) and Grayson Tyler Johnson.

Milligan’s low-budget productions — on which he served as writer, director, cinematographer, editor, set decorator, and costume designer and included such cult “classics” as The Ghastly Ones, Bloodthirsty Butchers, Guru The Mad Monk, Torture Dungeon, and The Rats Are Coming! The Werewolves Are Here! — were predominately period melodramas fueled by themes of sadism, incest, and misogyny bathed in bottom-of-the-barrel gore effects, filmed on Staten Island and forever consigned to grindhouse purgatory.

‘In Stand-Up, You Get My Raw Feelings’: How Josh Johnson Is Reinventing Comedy
Image
Josh Johnson can’t remember all of the details about this one particular bank robbery gone wrong. It happened in the Seventies, or maybe it was the Eighties. The amount of money stolen is hazy. But he can recall the parts that matter — the funny ones. “He ran up in there, robbed the place, didn’t wear a mask,” the comedian says. “They eventually catch up with him, and he’s so shocked that he’s been arrested.” With an exasperated flair, the Louisiana native echoes one phrase the culprit...

‘Ransom Canyon’ Soundtrack: All The Songs You’ll Hear In The New Netflix Western Romance Series
Image
Ransom Canyon, Netflix’s new Western romance series based on the books by Jodi Thomas, has plenty of opportunities for a good needle drop, and music supervisor Madonna Wade-Reed made sure to take advantage of all kinds of music available to her and especially emotional moments in the series to put song to.

From Gracie’s Dance Hall, owned by Minka Kelly’s Quinn O’Grady, to the raucous rodeo scenes mid-series, many a familiar country artist and other folk bands and groups feature as the backdrop to the storyline, which contains a murder mystery element, several love stories and a struggle over land and territory between ranching dynasties and the development company Austin Water and Power.

One particularly memorable moment involves Josh Duhamel’s Staten Kirkland getting pretty drunk and throwing a Hootie and the Blowfish jam on the jukebox in Quinn’s bar.
