Emmy-Nominated ‘Slow Horses’ Writer/EP Will Smith To Exit Show After Season 5; Reveals Emotional Farewell And His Dream Spin-Off
Image
Slow Horses writer and executive producer Will Smith has revealed to Deadline that he will close the door on Slough House for good after Season 5, which will premiere this fall on Apple TV+.

Smith, set the tone and kept the bar high for the faithful screen adaptation of Mick Herron’s series of spy novels, and has shepherded Slow Horses all the way from its inception. He admitted “there were certainly some private tears” as Season 5 production came to a close.

Smith is Emmy-nominated in Writing and Drama Series this year and won for Writing last year. Slow Horses has already been renewed up to Season 7 and Smith has handed over the reins for Season 6 to Gaby Chiappe, and Ben Vanstone for Season 7, but will not remain on the production in any capacity beyond Season...

What Each ‘Slow Horses’ Character Did to Get Exiled From MI5 and End Up in Slough House
Image
Slough House in Apple TV+’s Slow Horses is the equivalent of a dumping ground. It’s where the MI5 sends its disgraced agents who are misfits but aren’t useless enough to let go of completely. Adapted from Mick Herron’s Slough House novels, the show follows a ragtag group of dishonored spies under Jackson Lamb’s abrasive leadership.

These agents are the ones who are given the name of the titular “slow horses,” as they hope to get redemption for their mistakes. Till then, they do menial tasks in the dingy office and survive the drudgery till their time comes. But what did these agents do that brought them to the Slough House? Each MI5 agent comes with a unique backstory. So, let’s dive into why these characters were booted from the MI5 and brought to the Slough House.

It Starts On The Page (Drama): Read ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4 Finale Script “Hello Goodbye” With Foreword By Will Smith
Image
Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page (Drama) features 10 standout drama scripts in 2025 Emmy contention.

Season 4 of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses wrapped another taut tale from the world of Mick Herron’s spy novels with the episode “Hello Goodbye,” a poignant finale that has become the norm for series creator Will Smith, who has turned Herron’s books about the Mi:5 gang that allegedly can’t shoot straight into must-watch TV.

Smith — the reigning Emmy winner in the drama writing category for Season 3 of Slow Horses, which landed nine noms overall, including Outstanding Drama Series — was nominated for a third consecutive USC Scripter Award this year for “Hello Goodbye.” The episode, directed by Adam Randall, includes the big reveal that the mercenary team wrecking havoc in London all season long is run by the father of River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) — a revelation that sets off the...

‘Slow Horses’ star Rosalind Eleazar gets real about her MI5 outcast Louisa Guy: ‘She’s really not Ok’
Image
Rosalind Eleazar captures the grief hidden beneath MI5 outcast Louisa Guy’s steely exterior with a subtle and restrained touch that reveals Louisa's grief in flickers. Her performance isn't overplayed; it's deeply felt, letting quiet glances and restrained gestures speak volumes about her character's inner turmoil in the Emmy-nominated Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

"She is one of the more grounded characters, but I do think her internal life is incredibly chaotic. She's a hard shell and it takes time for us to see glimpses of her," Eleazar tells Gold Derby. "I've had fun teasing her out over the seasons, and we get to know her better, more and more, but I think she's a loner. I don't think she has many friends. I think she has shut herself off to the potential of love or happiness in some way. Sometimes I think her groundedness is actually her protecting herself,...

Gary Oldman on ‘Slow Horses’ being ‘an extraordinary show to work on’ and ‘one of the highlights of my career’
Image
Gary Oldman is clearly having a ball playing the gruff, ill-mannered and often underestimated Jackson Lamb in the Emmy-winning Apple TV+ spy thriller Slow Horses.

"We often laugh actually, while we're doing it. We crack up and then and do retakes," he tells Gold Derby. "It's been an extraordinary show to work on, not only because the material is very good and obviously the character is just a dream. But it's been really made all the more special because of the people working on the show. And that is really across the board from makeup, costume, Dp, camera operator, clapper loader, although they're not really clapper loaders anymore," he says. "I love regrouping after a break and then getting back and seeing everyone. The set is very easy to work on in that respect. Just an incredible bunch of people and that really has made it, I think, one of the highlights of my career.

‘Slow Horses’ EP Doug Urbanski on the secret to the show’s success: ‘We try to make the perfect martini’ and what’s next in Season 5: ‘it’s the most fun and most silly’
Image
You practically need to keep a portable defibrillator next to your remote when you stream Slow Horses. The Apple TV+ series, has more twists, near deaths, and other heart-stopping moments within a single episode than other series do over the span of an entire season. But it’s the everyday travails of its characters that keep them close to the audiences’ heart, says star Gary Oldman.

“The appeal of the show is that we give you the world of espionage, but these are people you can relate to more than the tuxedo-clad James Bond,” Oldman told Gold Derby at an FYC event for Slow Horses at the Meryl Streep Center for Performing Arts at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation on Saturday.

“They’ve got their marriage problems, kid problems, they have to pay their mortgages, and go to the laundromat,” Oldman added. “We see them do things that spies aren’t normally seen doing.

Image
Slow Horses is saddled up and ready to get back in the Emmys race.

Gold Derby has confirmed that the Apple TV+ drama is submitting nine different actors for its fourth season.

Gary Oldman, who plays the unkempt, flatulent head of the Slough House, Jackson Lamb, will be submitted in Best Drama Actor. The Oscar winner (Darkest Hour) was nominated in this category last year for Season 3 and earned one prior Emmy bid in 2001 for his guest appearance on Friends.

Two more past nominees will be submitted in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category: Jack Lowden as River Cartwright, a former M15 agent exiled to the Slough House; and Jonathan Pryce — who competed in the guest category last year — as David Cartwright, a retired M15 officer and River's grandfather. Hugo Weaving Will Return to 'Slow Horses' in Season 5
Image
Who doesn't enjoy watching a good actor absolutely chew through the scenery as a big baddie? That's at least part of the appeal of Hugo Weaving's diabolically evil character in Slow Horses. The acclaimed Australian actor first showed up in the Apple TV+ series in season four and changed the game for the at-times dysfunctional MI5 agents and it looks like his character, Frank Harkness, is going to return in the already-confirmed fifth season of the Gary Oldman-starring series.

While speaking at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, according to Variety, Weaving confirmed that Harkness will be back, explaining that he will head to London in January for a two and a half month shoot. Whether that includes an appearance in the also-confirmed sixth season remains to be seen.

Slow Horses has been an immense hit for the streaming service. The show follows the idiosyncratic team...

Everyone Else Burns Season 2 Review: Praise Be to the Return of this Cult Hit Comedy!
Image
Set in the close-knit community of an evangelical church in Manchester, Everyone Else Burns makes its triumphant return for a second season of belly laughs and thought-provoking fun. Drewing from writer Dillon Mapletoft’s own upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian environment, this cult sitcom charmed audiences with its first outing. While Season 1 centered around family man David Lewis’ ambitions and dreams for his children, the new episodes shift focus to relationships and matters of the heart.

As ever, comedy gold arises from probing the eccentricities of cult life through the day-to-day happenings of the Lewis family. Dad David remains a hapless leader, mom Fiona seeks purpose beyond motherhood, and rebellious daughter Rachel comes of age—now faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage.

Besides sharp wit and razor-thin social satire, what makes Everyone Else Burns such unmissable viewing is its deep care for humanizing even the most extreme of characters.

Slow Horses Season 4 Ending's Character Death Gets Response From Stars: "For It To End This Way Was Really Hard"
Image
The character death at the end of Slow Horses season 4 gets a candid response from two of the show's stars. The spy dramedy ended its fourth installment on Apple TV+ by going full circle in several ways. One of those was the death of a prominent Slow Horses cast member, which was teased in the premiere episode. It ended up unfolding very differently, with Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan) dying in a shootout at Slough House.

In an interview with Screen Rant's Tessa Smith, Kirwan and co-star Aimee-Ffion Edwards react to Marcus' death at the end of season 4. Kirwan reflects on filming the shootout, which he says took two weeks, and explains why it was a dream to film. As for Edwards, who plays Shirley Dander, she focuses on the emotional weight of the death considering the contentious but close relationship between Marcus and Shirley. Read their quotes below:

‘Slow Horses’ Antagonist Hugo Weaving Teases Thrilling Finale: “Great Way to End a Season”
Image
All the pieces are in place for a gripping Slow Horses finale — season four antagonist Hugo Weaving certainly thinks so.

The Brit, best known for his role in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, joined this season’s cast of Apple TV+’s hit spy thriller based on the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron. Weaving stars as Frank Harkness, a former CIA agent-turned-cult leader aiming to populate the planet with trained killers (who will gladly do their father’s sinister bidding).

But as the season has unfolded, viewers have come to realize Harkness might be none other than River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) biological father — after all, the physical similarities between River and “Robert Winters” a.k.a Betrand, who Jonathan Pryce’s David Cartwright shot and killed, are pretty eerie.

Meanwhile, Gary Oldman‘s greasy, drunk yet impossibly wise Jackson Lamb has made it his mission to locate the elder Cartwright,...

Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in Slow Horses (2022)
Slow Horses (Season 4) Episode 5: Recap and Ending Explained – How Does Harkness Capture River?
Gary Oldman and Jack Lowden in Slow Horses (2022)
With how “Slow Horses” had been progressing, season 4 episode 5 would be one of those set-up episodes that also turns out to be make or break. All the chess pieces slowly start to move across the board and set themselves up for a confrontation, or, as Harkness states in the opening segment of this episode, “calling hello on the way.” It all converges with an action sequence that recalls the fantastic action-heavy last season.

Slow Horses (Season 4) Episode 5 “Grave Danger” Recap: Where does Harkness go to gather information and regroup?

Suppose the primary question had been how Harkness had been able to gather information about Chapman and Cartwright. In that case, we are afforded the answer this week when Harkness visits the apartment of the librarian of the Park’s archive, Molly. We learn that Harkness had been essentially catfishing her for a week by presumably taking on the cold body identity of Mitch Philpott.

Slow Horses Season 4 Cast & Character Guide
Image
Slow Horses is back for its fourth outing, prompting many returning viewers to wonder who is in the hit Apple TV+ show's cast. Slow Horses season 4's story will pull its plot and characters from Spook Street, another entry in Mick Herron's Slough House series of books. So far, the unconventional British spy thriller has adapted Herron's Slow Horses, Dead Lions, and Real Tigers, promising another Slow Horses entry that differs from the books in small ways, all while capturing their spirit. The series centers on MI5's Slough House the purgatory for "slow horses" who've made career-ending missteps.

Despite being relegated to drudgery, the Slough House agents end up involved in high-profile cases often thanks to Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the rude-yet-perceptive veteran agent who heads up Slough House's team of incompetent misfits. In Slow Horses season 3's ending, Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), the office administrator, resigns from Slough House,...

Slow Horses season 4 episode guide: Everything to know so you don't miss out!
Image
Slow Horses is about to unveil its fourth season so here’s a quick guide on how to tune in to the latest ride for the quirky British spy series! Are you ready for season 4?

Debuting in 2022, Slow Horses adapts the spy novels by Mick Herron. It focuses on the Slough House, a branch of the British MI5 intelligence service that’s basically meant for the reject agents who have screwed up somehow. It’s headed by Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a sardonic, insulting, gassy veteran who seems to hate everyone around him. While they’re meant to be put on dull jobs, somehow, the “slow horses” manage to find themselves getting involved in missions that endanger Great Britain.

Each season has adapted a different novel in the series and Slow Horses season 4 is no different, adapting the 2017 book, “Spook Street.” It has the team pulled into investigating a bombing...

Vuelve la aclamada serie de espías. © Apple TV+

‘Slow Horses’ Season 4 Trailer: Jackson Lamb Still Cracks Jokes After Losing an Agent | Video
Gary Oldman
Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) is always in a joking mood — even, it seems, after losing one of his agents.

In the Season 4 trailer, which Apple released on Tuesday, the Slough House team is called into the case of a serial bomber, which rattles all of London.

We also meet a new character played by Ruth Bradley of “Ted Lasso,” who is immediately at odds with the prickly spy. When she refers to his agents as “the rejects,” he tells her, “They don’t like being called that.” When she asks what he calls his team, he naturally replies, “The rejects.”

Watch the trailer below:

When he objects to being put in cuffs, she says, “I’d rather not take any chances with a man who looks like he gropes people on buses.” His reply: “You’re being hurtful about my appearance. I might have to call Hr.”

Later in the trailer,...

Slow Horses: New Trailer For Season 4 Starts With A Bang
Image
There are many reasons why Slow Horses has become one of the most popular series on Apple TV+. The compelling adaptations of Mick Herron's best-selling, grungy, street-level spy novels. The witty dialogue from showrunner Will Smith and his team. And, possibly most of all, the foul-mouthed (and foul-bodied) lead performance from Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb. All are present and correct in the first trailer for the fourth season of the show, which you can find below.

As Season Four dawns, London at large and the already unstable foundations of those in Slough House – the dumping ground for those in MI5 who have screwed up or otherwise displeased their bosses — are rocked by an explosion at a shopping centre. The event leads to personal secrets leaking everywhere, while at the same time, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) must deal with his grandfather David's (Jonathan Pryce) crumbling mental faculties.

Jackson Lamb Has a New Sparring Partner in Slow Horses Season 4 Trailer
Image
“Cuffs won’t be necessary,” Jackson Lamb tells the new Head ‘Dog’ in the first trailer for Slow Horses season four. She slaps a pair on him anyway with the retort that she’d rather not take any chances with a man “who looks like he gropes people on buses.” Affecting sensitivity, Lamb drily jokes that after such a personal insult, he might have to call Hr.

Slow Horses is back, baby.

Well, almost back. The fourth season starts streaming on Apple TV+ with a double-bill on Wednesday September 4, followed by a new episode weekly until the finale arrives on October 2.

Lamb’s season four sparring partner is Emma Flyte, the new head of MI5 internal affairs, replacing former tactical unit boss Duffy. He went the way of so many of this show’s characters after the events of last season, and now Ruth Bradley’s unflappable Flyte is on...
