Alexis & Fido Have Outlasted Their Competition
Image
Alexis & Fido have been here since the beginning. But though they’re legitimate OGs of reggaeton, the dynamic performers and masters of the double-entendre are some of the quietest superstars in a genre that’s not quiet at all — though foundational hits like “5 Letras,” “Mala Conducta,” and “El Tiburón” speak for themselves.

They’re celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, marking when they serendipitously teamed up as a duo on the album Desafío thanks to the data limits of CDs (more on that below.) Both hail from Cayey, the same...

After More Than Two Decades in Reggaeton, Wisin Is Feeling More Adventurous Than Ever
Image
Wisin & Yandel’s first album, Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, came out in 2000. For millennial hip-hop heads, that was the year Outkast’s Stankonia and Ghostface Killah’s Supreme Clientele dropped. For rock fans, that’d be the year Radiohead released Kid A. And for zoomers, well, that was three years before Olivia Rodrigo was even born.

All of that is a long-winded way of saying Wisin has been around for a minute now. But if his new album, Mr. W, is any indication, he’s an O.G. who...

Todo el mundo ama a Young Miko
Image
Read in English

Traducción de E.R. Pulgar

Young Miko is taking me for a drive to Piñones, the northeastern Puerto Rico hot spot known for its mesmerizing ocean views and long history as a stronghold of Afro-Caribbean culture. “I knew I had to bring you here,” she tells me. And she was right: A Puerto Rican in the diaspora always longs to come home to a paradisiacal drive along the coast, stopping for food and drinks, and smelling the salty air along the way.

Miko knows all about that. February just started, and the...

T-Pain on Ghostwriting Country Songs and Usher’s Auto-Tune Criticism: “We’ve Been Fine”
Image
T-Pain says he plans to continue to write country music songs as a ghostwriter.

The singer-songwriter-producer recently made headlines when he revealed that he stopped taking credit for the country songs he’s worked on because of the “racism” he dealt with in the genre.

“I wrote a lot of country songs, and the country songs that I get credit on — I wouldn’t say backlash or anything like that — but [there] was a lot of criticism of, ‘Why did they let a Black person be a part of this?’ or things like that. It was just a lot of that stuff. So I kind of just backed off from putting my name on things and just collect the money,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t need to be known for any of that. That’s fine.”

“I’m a ghostwriter [and] it’s just easier,” he continues. “Why not?

When Bad Bunny dropped his first-ever album X100PRE, it spread through the internet like good gossip. It was Christmas Eve in 2018, the same year that Bad Bunny had exploded as a global megastar — appearing on The Tonight Show and singing during Alesso’s set at Tomorrowland — despite being an independent artist with no full-length project under his belt. What he did have was nearly hundreds of successful trap hits and a following he had named “La Nueva Religión,” which would go on to make him the most listened to...

Don Omar, Luny Tunes and Wisin Y Yandel Bring the “Sandunga” With New Single
Image
Have we suddenly been transported back to the 2000s? Looking at the state of reggaetón right now, it might seem that way. From Baby Rasta Y Gringo recently releasing a masterclass in the genre, Chencho linking up with Wisin for the banger "Loco X Perrearte," and Tainy making his teachers proud by continuing to push the limits of perreo, there is plenty of new reggaetón for fans to be excited about. Now, Luny Tunes are back with "Sandunga," a brand new single that dropped on Nov. 2 and reaches deep into their bag of beats to remind you just how big of a role they played in making reggaetón what it is today. And acho man, it's heavy.

While the word sandunga can have different connotations in different parts of Latin America, in Puerto Rico it is an Africanismo that signifies the essence of the party. It is that essential raw,...
