The allure of the American road trip is a potent cinematic myth, a promise of reinvention painted across vast landscapes. It’s a fantasy of shedding one’s past like a second skin. Josalynn Smith’s debut feature, Ride or Die, taps directly into this vein of storytelling.
We meet Paula, a young, aspiring filmmaker whose path to Los Angeles is meticulously planned. Her careful ambitions are thrown into exhilarating disarray by Sloane, a charismatic ghost from her high school days.
Their reunion at a thrift store crackles with unspoken history and immediate chemistry. In a beat of pure impulse, they load up Paula’s old Wagoneer and head west, fueled by the intoxicating optimism of a new romance. Their journey begins under a sun-drenched sky, but the long shadows of the road ahead hint at dangers that will challenge more than just their vehicle.

Peter Sarsgaard, featured in The Batman and Orphan, as well as Dopesick and Presumed Innocent, has joined the Apple TV+ adaptation of the cyberpunk classic Neuromancer. The show is currently in production, and despite not sharing many details, Sarsgaard did talk about the ten-episode miniseries that'll see him play a very wealthy tech mogul.
Per the report by Deadline, the 54-year-old actor was at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he received an honorary award. Sarsgaard talked about his acting technique in major works like September 5 and the upcoming monster feature The Bride!. The Green Lantern veteran also revealed a few details about the cyberpunk heist adaptation for Apple TV+ based on the book of the same name by William Gibson:
"It's a big, ten-episode thing for Apple. I play a guy called Ashpool, who, if you've read the book, is a guy who's created something that's sort of like AI.

Peter Sarsgaard arrived at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival with two forthcoming genre projects in tow—and a pledge to “seek the truth” every time he steps on set. During a Kviff Talk he confirmed his role in Apple TV+’s adaptation of William Gibson’s cyber-punk milestone Neuromancer and called Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein off-shoot The Bride! “provocative, sexy, dangerous and punk.”
Apple posted a “Welcome to the Chatsubo” video on YouTube, TikTok and Facebook last week, announcing that the ten-episode series—steered by showrunner Graham Roland and pilot director Jd Dillard—has entered production. Sarsgaard plays patriarch John Ashpool opposite Callum Turner’s hacker Case and Briana Middleton’s mirror-eyed assassin Molly. Polygon noted that Apple’s order ends four decades of failed film attempts to bring the 1984 novel to screen.
Spain’s Cinco Días reports the streamer is banking on Neuromancer to reinforce its science-fiction slate following Foundation and Silo.

Apple has officially started work on Neuromancer, a new 10-episode adaptation of William Gibson's 1984 novel. Check out the announcement teaser above, which highlights the moody interiors typical of the cyberpunk genre.
Cyberpunk stories take place in dystopian futures where things like cybernetics and artificial intelligence have been integrated into societies. Often there's a huge amount of wealth inequality. Neuromancer didn't invent the cyberpunk, but it did help popularize it. You can see the book's influence everywhere, from Blade Runner to Ready Player One to Cyberpunk 2077. And Gibson was the first person to use the term "matrix" to describe an immersive digital world, so we have him to those movies.
So Neuromancer had a huge influence on cyberpunk and on sci-fi in general, but mostly in terms of mood and setting; I don't feel like many people are familiar with the actual plot. It's about a hacker named Case, who...

Upcoming cyberpunk TV show Neuromancer has a huge reputation to live up to, and Apple TV+ given us a tiny glimpse at what to expect.
AppleTV+ has a rather good sci-fi selection already, but it’s in the process of adding another title to its library that is one of the foundational stories in futuristic fiction. Neuromancer is adapted from the book of the same name by William Gibson, and along with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, is largely credited with birthing the cyberpunk genre.
Cyberpunk has continued to flourish in these past few years, not least because of CD Projekt Red’s enormously successful videogame, Cyberpunk 2077, itself adapted from a tabletop role-playing game that like Neuromancer and Blade Runner, launched in the 1980s. While Cdpr are also developing a Cyberpunk 2077 live action TV show along with Anonymous Content, it feels appropriate that Gibson’s seminal novel will arrive on our screens first,...

Welcome to the Chatsubo, cowboy.
To mark the 41st anniversary of William Gibson's Neuromancer hitting shelves, Apple TV+ has released the first teaser for its upcoming series adaptation of the Cyberpunk classic.
The promo doesn't show much, but we do get to walk through the doors of Bar Chatsubo, an establishment that should be very familiar to fans of Gibson's work.
Briana Middleton is set to play Molly Millions, and some recent set photos revealed that she looks pretty much exactly how the cyborg mercenary is described in the novels.
Molly, also known as Sally Shears and Rose Kolodny, was first introduced in Gibson's 1981 short story Johnny Mnemonic (which was adapted as a critically-lambasted 1995 movie starring Keanu Reeves) before going on to play a more significant role in the Sprawl Trilogy, Neuromancer (1984), Count Zero (1986), and Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988).

Apple TV+ has released an exciting teaser for its highly anticipated Neuromancer adaptation, offering a first look at a key location from William Gibson's iconic 1984 sci-fi novel. The short clip was shared online on July 1, the same date that the book was published 41 years ago, to announce the start of production on the 10-episode cyberpunk series, which will arrive on the streaming service, courtesy of show creators Graham Roland and J.D. Dillard. Roland is acting as the showrunner, while Dillard is directing the pilot episode.

Over forty years after its source material was first published, Neuromanceris finally coming online. Apple TV+ announced that the long-awaited cyberpunk science fiction adaptation has entered production in a new teaser clip. No release date for the series has yet been announced. The series will be an adaptation of William Gibson's seminal 1984 novel, which essentially birthed the entire cyberpunk genre. Many attempts at adapting the novel for the screen have been made, but Apple, whose Macintosh personal computer was likewise first released in 1984, will be the first one to successfully crack the code.
In the teaser, a bar slowly comes to life, its lights and arcade machines switching on, before a neon sign buzzes to life, revealing that the bar is the Chatsubo, the Chiba City lounge that is a key location in the novel. It then announces that the series, which was first greenlit in early 2024, is now in production.

Good news for Cyberpunk fans, Apple TV+ is bringing a bold adaptation of William Gibson’s Neuromancer. This adaptation of the sci-fi cult classic embraces the roots of the genre rather than echoing than beating about the bush.
Along with its other sci-fi hits such as Foundation, Severance, and Murderbot, Apple TV+ is shaping up a diverse and vibrant ecosystem for sci-fi viewers, and Neuromancer looks like a promising addition to it. The channel has attempted to create a series that would interest devoted fans and new viewers alike and be a gripping watch, whether you’re a veteran or novice to the genre.
Neuromancer aims to define Cyberpunk and not redo it
As announced in February 2024, Apple TV+ has given the green signal for Neuromancer adaptation into a 10-episode series. This is a significant shift from the previous movie attempts on the same theme that didn’t work out.

In “Ride of Die,” things go sideways for its road trippers in a hurry. Paula and Sloane are barely out of St. Louis when they need a tow. The truck driver arrives with a twang. He’s unsavory and too leering for comfort. Matters aren’t helped any that minutes earlier, Paula had noticed something swinging from a tree in this stretch of rural blacktop.
It’s probably not fair to compare films that put two women on the road and under duress to the 1991 classic “Thelma & Louise,” but when that on-the-lam duo drove off a cliff and into icon status, the film all but guaranteed ghostly sightings. A recent descendent was Kitty Green’s “The Royal Hotel,” which sent two backpacking friends — a practical one and an impulsive one — into the Australian outback to work at a pub where sexual menace infuses the arid air.

All is fair in love and war, but what if you’re at war with the one you love? First time director Josalynn Smith’s debut “Ride or Die” challenges the idealization of a long-festering crush with a queer thriller twist. Jamie Foxx’s Foxxhole Productions produces the feature, which will premiere at Tribeca in the U.S. Narrative Competition.
“Ride or Die” centers on Paula (Briana Middleton), who is unexpectedly reunited with her not-quite-ex Sloane (Stella Everett). Together, they decide to drive across the country to start a new life…but little do they know there is a darkness on the horizon. The below clip hints at some of the turmoil the duo will endure.
The synopsis reads: “When Paula (Middleton), a young Midwesterner who dreams of a fresh start in California, runs into Sloane (Everett), her secret high school crush, who has her demons, the chemistry is electric.

Paul Mescal continues to emerge as one of the finest young actors working today. The Irish actor rose to fame for his lead role in the BBC/Hulu miniseries Normal People, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. From there, Mescal transitioned to film with his feature debut in The Lost Daughter and quickly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his quietly devastating performance as a troubled father in A24's Aftersun. He also starred in the LGBTQ+ romance All of Us Strangers, earning a BAFTA nomination for his performance.
However, for his first major action blockbuster, Mescal carefully chose Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, playing the lead role of Lucius, the son of Russell Crowe's Maximus. Despite expanding to big-budget filmmaking, Mescal hasn't lost his identity as an actor and continues to opt mostly for smaller, independent projects that showcase his subtle sensibilities as an actor. Paul Mescal reflected on masculinity in film during the Cannes press conference for “The History of Sound,” saying that he thinks cinema is “moving away” from alpha male roles. Mescal stars in Oliver Hermanus’ gay romance alongside Josh O’Connor, with the two playing musicians who travel to New England together in the summer of 1919 to record the folk songs of their rural countrymen.
“It’s ever shifting,” he said. “I think maybe in cinema we’re moving away from the traditional, alpha, leading male characters. I don’t think the film is defining or attempting to redefine masculinity, I think it is being very subjective to the relationship between [their characters] Lionel and David.”
The actor also spoke out against comparisons of the film to “Brokeback Mountain,” calling them “lazy and frustrating.” Several reviews of “The History of Sound,” including Variety‘s, drew a connection between the two films.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor made Cannes Film Festival sob on Wednesday night with Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” which earned a six-minute standing ovation.
While Mescal received a standing ovation when walking in, O’Connor had to miss the premiere because he was finishing filming his part in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film and couldn’t make it.
Though O’Connor wasn’t present, Mescal carried the weight. One rowdy fan screamed, “We love you, Paul!” seconds before the film started, when the audience usually sits in reverent silence. By the end, moviegoers were weeping and swatting at each other trying to get video of Mescal, who was also tearing up.
“This has been one of the most wonderful creative collaborations of my very, very short career, but this has been a testament to the genius of Paul Mescal,” said director Hermanus.

With Thunderbolts* in theaters and a few more roles on the way, Sebastian Stan has been killing it recently. Well, to be fair, he’s been killing the scene for quite some time now. Whether it’s Carter Baizen in Gossip Girl or Steve in Fresh, the actor has consistently proven his range on screen. Just look at A Different Man and The Apprentice – two completely different roles in the same year! And of course, we don’t even need to mention Bucky Barnes.
However, it looks like Sebastian Stan may not have been entirely transparent while auditioning for the plethora of characters he has played. As it turns out, he has lied a handful of times just to get ahead of the line. A little white lie never hurt anyone, right?

We recently got our first look at Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard's upcoming streaming adaptation of William Gibson's Cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer, via some revealing set photos featuring Briana Middleton as Molly Millions, and we now have another look at the actress sporting a very different costume.
Millions is a ruthless, but honourable "razorgirl" (street samurai) with augmented reflexes and cybernetic implants, including razor-sharp retractable blades underneath her fingernails and vision-enhancing mirrored lenses covering her eye-sockets.
So far, Middleton is the only main cast member to be spotted on set, but other photos have revealed some background actors in various Cyberpunk-inspired outfits.

We’ve got something exciting brewing over at Apple TV+, and it’s got a bit of a mechanical twist. ‘Murderbot’ is gearing up to land on our screens soon, promising a wild mix of laughs, thrills, and a robot who’s more into soap operas than you’d expect. I’ve been keeping an eye on this one, and it’s shaping up to be a fresh addition to the streaming lineup.
The show comes from a pretty talented crew, with some big names behind it. It’s based on a book series that’s already won a bunch of awards, so there’s a solid foundation here. The story follows a security bot with a mind of its own, stuck between dangerous jobs and a secret love for TV drama. It’s the kind of setup that could go anywhere, and I’m curious to see how they pull it off.

Neuromancer: First Set Photos From Apple TV+ Adaptation Spotlight Briana Middleton As Molly Millions
Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard's streaming adaptation of William Gibson's Cyberpunk classic, Neuromancer, is now shooting, and some new photos from the set give us a first look at one of the show's main characters.
Briana Middleton is set to play Molly Millions, and as you can see from the photos below, she looks pretty much exactly how the cyborg mercenary is described in Gibson's novels.

2023 was a dark year for the film industry. Beyond the writers' and actors' strikes, there was the continuation of the disturbing trend by studios and streamers to shelve or sell already completed projects, upsetting fans and all the creative talent behind those titles. The shelving of Batgirl was the first jaw-dropper back in 2022. In 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery added Coyote vs. Acme to that list, as did Netflix with the cancelation of The Inheritance and House/Wife, two completed films with a lot of promise. While it's often said that Netflix has a habit of canceling TV shows with dedicated fan bases, they don't often cancel completely filmed and produced titles, so the news was a bit shocking and discouraging. One year later, though, The Inheritance quietly made its debut elsewhere — on Hulu.

The premise of the Canadian sci-fi drama, The Silent Planet, is itself promising enough to hook in seasoned fans of the genre. A distant lifeless planet, two prisoners burdened with emotional turmoil, and rising tension as their hidden secrets and insecurities start to surface, which muddles the distinction between reality and fantasy—seems to be a sure-shot recipe for success. The Silent Planet goes a step further by adding solid acting talents, Elias Koteas and Briana Middleton, as the leads, creating a believable futuristic world with convincing production design that defies budget constraints, and using sci-fi elements to enhance the narrative in the best way possible. The Silent Planet is an inventive, thought-provoking experience that stays with viewers long after the movie has ended.

What if your adoptive parents weren't just from another country, but rather... another world? It's one of several intriguing plot points in director Jeffrey St. Jules' new film The Silent Planet, which is now available on digital. Lead actress Briana Middleton (The Inheritance) plays Niyya, a convicted felon who is sentenced to labor on another planet. It probably doesn't seem that absurd a penalty, given her parents are seemingly from another planet. Yes, Niyya was raised by aliens due to a long-ago tragedy that struck her actual parents' lives. MovieWeb recently spoke with both Middleton and St. Jules in separate interviews to learn more about how they put their heads together to better understand and flesh out the unique lead character — beyond just the words on St. Jules' script pages.
"A lot [of what we did] with her was talking about kind of how she grew up... and what it is about the alien...

Imagine getting convicted of a crime and sentenced to... life on another planet. And they don't call this new film's planet-in-question "silent" for nothing. Picture a prison sentence of solitary confinement taken to its logical extreme on a planet far, far away. Not that this story has any sort of ties to the ever-evolving Star Wars universe, though sci-fi die-hards might eat up the similarly delicious backdrops captured on location in Canada by writer-director Jeffrey St. Jules (Bang Bang Baby). As he recently told MovieWeb, the substance behind The Silent Planet extends far beyond the picturesque science-fiction nature and crime-mystery edge of the intricate plot he concocted.
The end result is a dreamy, reflective, and thought-provoking feature about coming to terms with our past, coping with never-ending guilt and such other relatable themes. The cerebral feel of the film draws you right in, with the added bonus of two solid performances portraying the dueling protagonists.

"You'll never be alone out here - there's too many voices." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for a Canadian indie sci-fi film titled The Silent Planet, made by filmmaker Jeffrey St. Jules. That title reminds me of another underrated sci-fi indie film called Silent Running (from 1972) with Bruce Dern. This new film follows two inmates in the near future who are sentenced to a lifetime of hard labor on a distant planet. As things unravel, they become increasingly paranoid and start to lose a sense of who they are and their past lives. The film premiered at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival last year and will be on VOD in March: "Known for his surreal approach to his subject matter, [director Jeffrey] St. Jules explores what the future of Earth would look like if we included aliens as a part of immigration policies. A 2024 horror film starring Cobra Kai's Peyton List has found recent success on Hulu after its low-key debut earlier this year and rejection by most critics. The Inheritance currently has a 38% Rotten Tomato score.
Netflix announced in January 2023 that it would no longer distribute the horror movie as initially intended, opening the door for Vertical to acquire distribution rights for The Inheritance. Following a limited theatrical run, the film arrived without fanfare on video-on-demand (VOD) on July 12, 2024. The Inheritance, however, made a triumphant return to streaming, having been in and around Hulu's top 10 recently. The film peaked at no. 3 within the platform's top 15 movies earlier this week and has since managed to maintain its place in the top 15. The uptick in the interest the film is garnering from audiences on Hulu is not easily explained, given its 30% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse than its critic score.
