What We Do in the Shadows has been set to return in late October with its sixth and final season. The mockumentary sitcom, created by Jemaine Clement, follows a group of goofy vampires who face a wacky paranormal problem each week, one that often serves as a springboard for killer jokes. While waiting for What We Do in the Shadows to make its bittersweet return, fans should check out another hilarious horror comedy show, Los Espookys. The HBO comedy created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen is every bit as funny as FX's vampire series.

Julio Torres’ new HBO series Fantasmas takes its name from the Spanish word for “ghosts,” which Torres’ fictionalized alter ego wants to use for a clear crayon. When a Crayola executive asks why anyone would want such a thing, Julio argues, “Some things aren’t the normal colors, or play by the rules of the rainbow.”
Torres himself has no interest in normal colors, whether in his movie Problemista or his previous HBO show, the surreal supernatural buddy comedy Los Espookys. He can look at ridiculous things and treat them with intense seriousness,...

For those who have similarly been bemoaning the loss of the spectacular series Los Espookys, our long nightmare is now finally coming to an end. Not only is co-creator Julio Torres back with a new HBO show, the fantastic Fantasmas, but it also has more than a few familiar faces that pop back up. Sure, many will be excited to witness those like Steve Buscemi, Dylan O'Brien, Paul Dano, and Emma Stone getting up to delightful silliness, but the real ones among us will be most thrilled to see Ana Fabrega and Bernardo Velasco proving once more that television is better with them in it. They help to ensure that this new series brings the same absurdist spirit of Los Espookys while pushing everything in a bold new direction. Fantasmas sees Torres digging further into the ideas hes always been interested in, simultaneously bringing a wonderfully withering skepticism towards entertainment itself amid the whimsy.

There’s truly no one like Julio Torres. The colorful – in both the creative and literal sense – comedian, who’s written for Saturday Night Live (he and Jeremy Beiler are responsible for “Wells for Boys”) and co-created the comedy series Los Espookys with Fred Armisen and Ana Fabrega, has crafted a world in Problemista that feels like we are watching the inner workings of his whimsical, unpredictable, and wonderfully strange brain. Torres, who’s comedy is wholly unique and offbeat and often includes small inanimate objects, feels like it has no bounds in the A24 movie.

There’s no doubt an element of wish-fulfillment at play when you’re a debut queer filmmaker casting Tilda Swinton as the lead of your movie.
That’s the case for the 37-year-old Julio Torres, a seasoned comedian onstage and former writer of “Saturday Night Live” (2016 through 2021) and co-creator of HBO’s short-lived cult series “Los Espookys.” His new A24 comedy “Problemista,” now in select theaters before opening wide on March 22, has already grossed more than $690,000 in just a handful of theaters. He stars in the endearing comedy as Alejandro, a fledgling toy designer hustling in New York in the last few days before his visa expires and he’s sent back to Central America. Alejandro accepts an assistant job under Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton), a whirling dervish and New York art scene castaway with faded magenta hair and a short fuse who tasks him with organizing a posthumous show for her dead artist husband,...

Director Conor Dooley’s all-encompassing comedy short Gold and Mud is a tale of one woman’s interaction with love and loss. A story told across a series of intimate vignettes that, when connected, depict many of life’s pitfalls and absurdities. The brilliance of Dooley’s film is in how subtly profound it is. You’ll be watching along laughing at his protagonist Ana (who is played with heart and humility by Ana Fabrega) and her shenanigans but before long you’ll realise that it’s resonating on a much deeper, emotional level. With Gold and Mud recently arriving online Dn joined Dooley for a conversation about his short, talking through the creative challenges he set himself from the off, how he shot the majority of the film in his own home, and the tonal balance of heart and fart that he always strives to achieve.

Exclusive: Comedic multi-hyphenate Julio Torres (A24’s Problemista) has struck a deal with Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway, non-profit theater in NYC, that will see them partner to identify, develop, and commission full-length projects from early-career comedy artists.
The collaboration further expands Ars Nova’s two-decade commitment to new comedy at a time when support systems for NYC-based artists have decreased. Under the partnership, Torres and Ars Nova will look to provide comedians with opportunities for development and production outside of the traditional model of sketch shows and 10-minute sets. They’ll offer funding up front to create brand new, uniquely theatrical shows, while providing mentorship and development resources to the artists involved, the first set for a commission being Ars Nova Vision Residency Alum River L. Ramirez. Others will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the alliance, Torres will return to the Ars Nova stage on October 26 to host Showgasm.

Everyone knows the world is full of wolves waiting to devour you whole. They lurk in the shadows, haunt your dreams, and salivate as they wait for you to stumble so they can make their move. Your only choice is to grow eyes in the back of your head, remain vigilant, and prepare yourself for what may come. In A24‘s Problemista trailer, a young man faces deportation unless he can rise above adversity and find a sponsor to help stave off the government hounds.

A24 has released a trailer for Julio Torres' indie comedy Problemista. Torres writes and directs the film and stars as Alejandro, a young Salvadorian artist who must contend with a monster of a boss in his pursuit of the American Dream. As the trailer shows, Alejandro is a talented toy designer from El Salvador, now living in New York, whose work visa is about to expire. He has just one month to find someone willing to serve as a co-signer for his visa so that he can remain in the United States. In an act of desperation, he turns to his boss Elizabeth, played by Tilda Swinton, a quirky (to put it nicely) outcast art curator who makes a deal with Alejandro; she will act as a co-signer, but he must help her put together an art exhibition. The trailer, which you can watch below, teases a surrealist adventure.

History of the World, Part I is far from the most beloved Mel Brooks movie, even if “It’s good to be the king” is one of the more enduring lines he ever wrote. It is, however, by far the most in need of a sequel. After all, it’s been 42 years since Brooks concluded the film with teasers for History of the World, Part II, which was to include the sketches “Hitler on Ice,” “A Viking Funeral,” and, most memorably, “Jews in Space.” Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are stone-cold classics,...

Fans of "Los Espookys" might not have a third season to look forward to, but they will be getting more work from the mind of co-creator and star Julio Torres very soon. Torres co-wrote the series with Fred Armisen and Ana Fabrega and co-starred as Andrés, the black sheep of his family of wealthy chocolatiers. But his next project is going to be a mini-series with HBO about something totally unexpected, as reported by Variety.
Torres' upcoming comedy series has been given the working title of "Little Films." The cast is yet to be announced, but the star of the show is said to be "a little golden oyster." Torres will document his quest to find his lost valuable and the adventures and realizations he encounters along the way. The series will be set in the concrete jungle of New York and is likely to feature other stars of the New York comedy world.

Just days after the surprise cancellation of “Los Espookys” at HBO, series creator Julio Torres has a new show in the works for the network.

Los Espookys has been canceled by HBO after two seasons. Created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, all of whom also star in the series alongside Bernardo Velasco and Cassandra Ciangherotti, the comedy series centers on a group of friends trying to turn their love of scary movies into a successful business. Most of their jobs consist of creating scenarios that are straight out of the horror genre and trying to trick people into believing that those scenarios are real. This all unfolds in a place where the strange and the eerie are part of everyday life.
According to Deadline, HBO has decided to cancel Los Espookys. This news ends the run of the series, which began in June 2019 and consisted of 12 episodes overall. In a statement, HBO emphasized that they were glad to bring Los Espookys season 2 to audiences after a long delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

HBO has axed one of its original series after only two seasons, despite it earning a coveted perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Starring Ana Fabrega, Julio Torres, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Bernardo Velasco and Fred Armisen, Los Espookys follows a group of friends in Mexico City who transform their love of horror movies into a business by creating scary situations and convincing people they’re real.
Since its debut in 2019 and its season two release in September, the absurdist comedy currently sits at a critical rating of 100 per cent.
However, while the primarily Spanish-language show managed to win over critics’ hearts, it’s largely flown under the public’s radar, which might explain the unexpected cancellation.
Confirming the news in a statement shared with Variety, HBO wrote: “We are thrilled we could deliver the unique and hilarious second season of ‘Los Espookys’ to viewers finally, more than three years after the series premiere,...

“Los Espookys,” HBO’s Spanish-language comedy series, has been canceled after two seasons at the network, IndieWire has confirmed.
Created by Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Fred Armisen, “Los Espookys” focused on a group of aimless friends who turn their love of the horror genre into a business where they trick people into thinking the supernatural is real. For two seasons, “Los Espookys” followed the horror-tinged comedic hijinks of friends aiming to turn their love of horror into a profitable business. Despite its critical acclaim, Deadline reports today that the recently aired second season will be the series last.

"Hispanic people can be weird," Ana Fabrega tells Popsugar before Julio Torres chimes in with, "Hispanic people can be selfish and stupid. They need a voice, too." Fabrega and Torres, along with Fred Armisen, are the creators behind "Los Espookys," a decidedly odd Spanish-language comedy on HBO. Its second season debuted on Sept. 16 after a multiyear hiatus due to Covid. Fabrega, Torres, and Armisen all wrote and appear in the show, which follows a group of friends who set up a business to scare (or sometimes just provide otherworldly impressions) to their clients. The first season establishes the group, bringing them together and explaining the concept. The second is free of those obligations, giving its characters more room to breathe and explore the ridiculous and funny in their situations.

To enter the carefully crafted upside-down world of Los Espookys, you need to suspend your disbelief. That the one-of-a-kind, predominantly Spanish-language HBO series isn’t quite concerned with rules or even logic is what makes it so wonderfully unpredictable. One of Los Espookys’ main characters, for example, has an ethereal water spirit lurking inside of him, ready to reveal his innermost truths. And that water spirit will only reveal those truths if the two of them watch the 2010 Academy Award-winning Colin Firth vehicle, The King’s Speech together. Of course.

Any description of “Los Espookys” will ultimately come up lacking, because the English language cannot create vibes that ring out with the coolness, vitality, and weirdly fused nerd-punk energy of “Los Espookys.” The HBO comedy has the same sense of care and texture and human creativity as hand-drawn animation, which is not to say that it looks unreal. But there’s a heightened quality to its visuals that perfectly matches who the characters are and the spirit of the show’s humor. You can tell the Los Espookys crew and even the hound-dog parking attendant Tico (Fred Armisen) are of, and have power over, their unnamed Latin American home. The costumes and the production design are central to creating the look and feel of Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega, and Armisen’s series about (if we must reduce it to a plot) a group of friends who run an agency that...

Explaining “Los Espookys” in words can be as tricky as high school pranksters on Halloween. Sure, writers could just copy and paste HBO’s official synopsis — “a group of friends turn their shared passion for horror into a peculiar business, providing horror to clients who need it” — but reading that perfectly accurate description is bound to elicit more questions than answers. What does “providing horror” mean? (It varies.) Who are these clients? How can four friends make a living in such a peculiar and particular field? (Don’t worry about it.)
Thankfully, Season 2 provides a typed out explanation for us. Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) is asked by his mother to consider hiring “the daughter of a woman I sometimes run into at the hair salon,” even though Los Espookys doesn’t need any extra help. Still, they agree to an “interview,” and Moníca Martínez comes prepared with a full Power Point presentation.

On Los Espookys, beauty pageants are a matter of life and death. Season two of the esoteric, sharply funny HBO Max comedy, premiering Sept. 16, finds Renaldo (Bernardo Velasco) haunted by the ghost of a former Miss Nuestra Belleza Latina beauty queen, which serves as a catalyst for exploring the campy, glitzy world of pageant culture. For creators Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega and Fred Armisen, the examination of the pageant world was approached with great reverence, as Torres explained in an exclusive conversation with E! News, "I don't know if it's a Central America thing or not, but beauty pageants were always a thing very akin to sports." Torres, who also stars on Los Espookys as the...

Describing the premise of Los Espookys, HBO’s wackiest sitcom and its first primarily Spanish-language original series, is easy enough. A ragtag group of friends start a business where they stage fake supernatural events for people who pay them. In the first episode, released three years ago, the team are hired by an older priest losing favour with his congregation to a younger cleric with great hair and glossy lips. He asks Los Espookys to rig up an exorcism to boost his reputation.
That’s the premise of the show. Its sensibility, though, is harder to pin down. The series, which returns for a much-delayed second season this week Sky Atlantic and Now, is a comedy that exists in an elusive space. Not only because the Latin-American country in which it’s set is unnamed, but because there, the surreal and the mundane sit side-by-side. Although the means that the...

"It's time for me to embrace the future." Warner Bros & HBO have revealed an official trailer for Father of the Bride, another new update of this comedy classic. Everyone knows the 1991 version, with Steve Martin & Diane Keaton, but did you know that is also a remake of a 1950 version of this movie? The original version featured Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, Elizabeth Taylor. This 2022 update introduces a Cuban-American family, preparing for the eldest daughter's wedding. And it will be skipping theaters - going directly to HBO Max for streaming this summer. A father's coming to grips with his daughter's upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American clan. The ensemble cast in this: Andy García, Gloria Estefan, Adria Arjona, Isabela Merced, Diego Boneta, Enrique Murciano, Macarena Achaga, Chloe Fineman, and Ana Fabrega. I like the cast, but this does not look that funny at all. Not...
