The upcoming animated film Boys Go to Jupiter has tunnel vision when it comes to being odd, different, and eccentric; you might even call it avant-garde, as it refuses to fit within the box of cinematic norms. The film possesses a winsome awkwardness that’s hard to resist, drawing you in with its enchanting quirkiness.
Along with a fantastic voice cast that includes stars such as Elsie Fisher, Janeane Garofalo, Cole Escola, Julio Torres, and Joe Pera, who help bring out the heart of the story in Boys Go to Jupiter, there is something poignant and, above all, human.

Boys Go to Jupiter, an animated feature directed and written by Pittsburgh-based 3D artist Julian Glander, is truly a product of its time. And that time is now. As the press notes mention: “[The film] was self-produced and animated entirely over 90 days on the free open-source 3D modeling program Blender. Peisin Yang Lazo executive produced.” Running about 85 minutes and featuring an impossibly stellar voice cast, this film is often funny and sometimes introspective about this land of screens we find ourselves trapped inside. A bit long in the tooth at times, it is undeniably engaging and reliably weird.
Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) is a teenager living in Florida and determined to gig work his way to five-thousand dollars. His main gig is delivering food for the DoorDash-like company Grubster (“Have a Grubby Day!”). He hangs out with his friends around an empty swimming pool and at local chain restaurants surrounded by empty construction spaces.

“Flow” winning an Oscar for Best Animated Film has been celebrated — specifically by us here at IndieWire — for its use of the free-to-download software Blender, which enabled the film’s Latvian animation team to craft a lush, human-free world of staggering beauty and rising water.
Practically at the other end of the spectrum of what’s possible, director Julian Glander has created a lo-fi, distanced, painfully, poignantly pastel vision of Florida in “Boys Go to Jupiter.” The film was also made in Blender, but this vaporwave coming-of-age story couldn’t look or feel more different.
The story follows intrepid (and intensely sleep-deprived) teenaged deliverista Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett) as he tries to hustle for the $5,000 he hopes will give him the independence he craves, even as absurd and miraculous things keep happening around him, his friends, and an orange juice factory run by Janeane Garofalo and Julio Torres. Julian Glander is a 3D artist whose work ranges from children’s books to video games, and the influence of the former on his feature-length directorial debut, Boys Go to Jupiter, is especially evident in the film’s isometric vision of the world. In the right light, his simple, rounded characters could pass for clay figures. Glander isn’t exactly emulating stop-motion, but the characters’ minute movements evoke it all the same, bringing a hand-crafted quality to a medium that’s typically viewed as impersonal. Every cut to a distant camera perspective asks us to ruminate over every detail that’s gone into composing the film’s scenes.
At a gentle, ambling pace that’s punctuated by dreamy musical numbers, Boys Go to Jupiter follows Billy 5000 (Jack Corbett), a high school dropout and “human calculator.” Billy, who’s growing apart from his friends, lives out of his sister’s garage...

Phillips, and singer-songwriter Miya Folick (who also provides an original song), plus Escola, Sherman, Tavi Gevinson, Julio Torres, Joe Pera, Eva Victor, Max Wittert, River L. "Is this really how you want to spend your whole life, just bumming around forever?" Whoa this looks fun. Cartuna has revealed the trailer for an indie animated film called Boys Go to Jupiter, the first feature by animator / 3D artist Julian Glander. This first premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival last year, and played at many other festivals including Nashville and Denver. A teenager in suburban Florida desperately hustles to make $5,000 in this dreamy and surreal animated flick. Billy is forced to make hard choices about love, friendship, and how far he'll go for financial security in a world ruled by capitalism in this absurdist, musical take on a coming-of-age comedy. With the voices of Jack Corbett, Tavi Gevinson, Elsie Fisher, Janeane Garofalo, Julio Torres, Max Wittert, & Demi Adejuyigbe. Stick the stars of six top comedies around a table for an hour, and it becomes increasingly impossible to keep composure. At least, that was the case for The Hollywood Reporter’s latest Comedy Actor Emmy roundtable, featuring Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), John Mulaney (Everybody’s Live), Seth Rogen (The Studio), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Julio Torres (Fantasmas).
The rollicking conversation hit on topics as far ranging as the ways in which they’ve been typecast — the schlubby stoner type (Rogen), the confident nerd (Brody), the “soulless wooden boy who’s fast on his feet” (Mulaney) — to the “dream roles” they didn’t land. (Spoiler: Brody fought hard for Blues Clues.) They also talked in earnest about the most challenging period in their careers and swapped tales about the most baffling creative notes they’ve ever received.

Sit six uniquely hilarious men around a table for an hour and simply try not to laugh. That proved an impossible task in early May, as Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This), Ted Danson (A Man on the Inside), John Mulaney (Everybody’s Live), Seth Rogen (The Studio), Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Julio Torres (Fantasmas) assembled for THR‘s Comedy Actor Emmy Roundtable. In fact, the sextet was regularly in stitches as the conversation moved from shocking exec notes to industry expectations and the projects that got away.

What is the wildest or most amusing thing you’ve all read or heard about yourself?
Ted Danson Two stick in my head. The headline was “Too Tepid Ted.”
All Oooh.
Seth Rogen They got you with alliteration!
Danson And then Mr. “Thinks He’s So Wonderful” Danson.
John Mulaney Oh man, that person didn’t like you at all.

There are certain performances audiences need to see to believe, especially when it comes to the ones on the HBO series “Fantasmas,” from creator, director, and star Julio Torres. For instance, how can one properly describe Steve Buscemi playing the letter “Q,” or Oscar winner Tilda Swinton being the voice of water?
IndieWire has exclusively learned that the current Gotham TV Awards nominee will be submitting for several Emmys categories, including the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series. The actors on “Fantasmas,” however, will still be among the Comedy Series contenders, similar to “Saturday Night Live,” which Torres used to write for. T.S. Eliot said April was the cruelest month, but that’s hardly the case for this April 2025, when Dea Kulumbegashvili’s shattering new drama “April” finally opens.
Ok, to be fair, “April” is a cruel film, set in a remote Georgian village, where a revered obstetrician is accused of malpractice and ostracized by her townspeople after a baby dies on the delivery table. Meanwhile, she provides illegal abortions for the village’s broken, young, and helpless women. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer below for the film, which won a Venice Film Festival 2024 special prize from a jury headed up by none other than Isabelle Huppert. Rising distributor Metrograph Pictures, which also operates a brick-and-mortar theater in Lower Manhattan, opens the film in select cities on April 25.
“April” reunites Kulumbegasvhili with actress Ia Sukhitashvili, who starred in the director’s 2020 breakout “Beginning,” about religious extremism and abuse, also set in a Georgian village.

Former Saturday Night Live castmember Aidy Bryant opened her monologue at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday by reflecting on an intimate moment between her and Kieran Culkin years ago.
Culkin hosted the sketch comedy series in 2021, and she kissed him during a sketch (which didn’t air).
“Kieran and I actually worked together when he hosted SNL, and we did a sketch and in it, we had to kiss — in a comedic way. And after dress rehearsal, Kieran said to my co-writer, ‘Wow, Aidy really went for it with that kiss,'” the Spirit Awards’ host recalled.
Bryant continued, “That actually got back to me, and then the sketch was cut and it never made it to air. And it just became a thing that I did that I have to live with.”
The comedian then said she wanted to “clear the air” and apologize for being so forward...

Before the Oscars light up Hollywood, the Film Independent Spirit Awards is bringing everyone down to the beach. Its annual celebration has been hosted at the Santa Monica Pier for many years, but 2025’s festivities there hold particular reverence, as just a little over a month ago, the area around this setting was ablaze from wildfires.
As serious as this tragedy was, the Spirit Awards, with “SNL” alumna and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant back as host, are sure to bring some much-needed levity to a city and community devastated by these recent natural disasters. Bryant will be joined by fellow “SNL” alumna and recent 50th Anniversary standout Molly Shannon, who serves as this year’s Honorary Chair. Other presenters for the evening include Tadanobu Asano, Carrie Coon, Danielle Deadwyler, Mark & Jay Duplass, Walton Goggins, Kathryn Hahn, Alana Haim, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Patti LuPone, Melanie Lynskey, Natasha Lyonne, Questlove, Edgar Ramirez, Hunter Schafer,...

Before Aidy Bryant takes the stage this Saturday for her triumphant return to hosting the Spirit Awards, she got the ultimate onstage crash course. Bryant, an SNL castmember for 10 seasons, just wrapped a starring gig on the Broadway show All In (it was also her debut on the Great White Way). She went into the experience with a slight sense of unease but says that it wound up being a complete joy — thanks, in large part, to her veteran co-stars Andrew Rannells and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
“Lin gave me all the tips and tricks, like the secret routes to walk around Midtown, and I was really struggling with the bows,” she says. “In comedy, you finish your best joke and you’re like, that’s my time — and you get out. Or when you host an award show, at the end of it everyone just wants to get out of there.

As we gear up for the big afternoon on the beach this Saturday, now’s a great time to get to know your nominees. Hopefully you’ve seen their films, and if you’re a Film Independent member, watched your screeners and voted too. But there’s nothing quite like hearing about the process from the creative minds themselves.
That’s exactly what we did with this year’s Directors Close-Up, where we brought together the nominees from some of the top filmmaking categories, to talk shop. Over two weeks this February, we held Zoom sessions for our members, where these creators tell how exactly they got their projects off the ground, the creative choices they made, and what inspires them.
If you missed them live, we’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at all the action from this year’s Directors Close-Up:
