We don’t make enough horror movies for teens. Sure, younger audiences are keen on films like Scream and Final Destination Bloodlines, but I’m talking explicitly teen-centric fare. The kind of gateway horror movies that are slumber party scary, but not “Mom’s gotta take me to see a specialist twice a week now” scary. Last year’s Tarot was precisely that, the kind of stylish, frightening, and finely tuned teen scream we don’t see often enough these days.
Blumhouse is doing pretty solid work on the PG-13, gateway horror front (I remain a massive Imaginary fan), though a lot of the better genre fare we’re getting is exclusively more for a mature, adult audience. And when teen screams are released, they don’t often get the kind of buzz other films do, especially if they’re fresh IPs. Well, I’ve done some digging, and one...

Exclusive: Fresh off the TIFF premiere of their new documentary Vice Is Broke, Get Out producer QC Entertainment has enlisted Gabrielle Union (Riff Raff) to star in The Casket Girls, a new horror film to be directed by Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), which they will produce and fully finance.
Written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Dyck, The Casket Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically, with stories of men drained of their blood. The girls were blamed and feared to be demons or vampires,...

Hollywood doubled down on demonic possession in 2023, tapping into the genre's lasting appeal with films like Evil Dead Rise. It Lives Inside takes a unique twist on the possession sub-genre, blending Hindu traditions and supernatural battles for Samidha's soul. The film's bittersweet ending leaves Samidha as the vessel for the malevolent demon, setting up a potential sequel with a cold, cruel twist.
The following contains spoilers for It Lives Inside.
Throughout 2023, Hollywood leaned into the demonic possession genre harder than usual. Horror fans reveled in Russell Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope's Exorcist, not to mention, Evil Dead Rise, which terrified audiences with the latest generation of Deadites. These films reinforced the idea that this niche sub-genre is one studios think audiences will always flock to, and rightfully so. Such films usually do well at the box office, despite critics usually panning their ilk as a rule.

Neon, the indie studio behind “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” has tapped the producers of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Jon Read and Allison Rose Carter, to lead their growing production arm. Read and Carter are the co-founders of Savage Rose Films.

The company’s recent foray into production have included Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside,” Theda Hammel’s “Stress Positions,” Jazmin Jones’s “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo.” This new in-house focus also includes upcoming projects from Joshua Oppenheimer, Boots Riley and David Robert Mitchell. Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.
However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

A jar full of trouble in It Lives Inside
One of this year’s big festival hits, launched at South by Southwest and travelling all around the genre circuit, Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside draws from a deep well of Indian mythology to introduce terrors never previously encountered in Western cinema. At the same time, it explores the struggles of Indian American teenager Sam/Samidha (Megan Suri) who feels caught between two cultures and, in particular, at odds with her traditionalist mother (Neeru Bajwa). The two storylines are deftly interwoven, with lots of sharp observations, and have made a big impression on audiences around the world.
Last month I had to opportunity to speak with Bishal, who is thrilled by the way that his film has been received. It’s great, he says, to have been able to get Indian Americans onscreen, when they’re seriously under-represented, but his...

It Lives Inside brings terror to a new level using the Pishacha, introducing Western audiences to a horror story from another culture. The Pishacha is a physical manifestation of evil in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. It Lives Inside stays true to key components of the legend, depicting it as a hunched-over creature with iconic bulging eyes.
Demons are a common sight for horror movie protagonists, but the recent release of It Lives Inside brings their supernatural power to a new level. Focused on a Hindu creation, a Pishacha terrorizes the town and butchers several people in the process. In true horror fashion, the monster is rarely seen through most of the film, but once it makes its debut, the tone shifts. But while the Pishacha is depicted as a horrifying creature from legend, the Hindu version is far more terrifying.

The supernatural horror film It Lives Inside, which stars Megan Suri of the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, didn’t draw in many viewers when it reached theatres last Friday. It had an opening weekend of $2.6 million and finished in seventh place on the top 10. Maybe it will do better when it reaches home video – and we can confirm that Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, will be giving the film a DVD release on November 7th. Copies are available for pre-order at This Link. We don’t have any information on a Blu-ray or 4K release at this time, but Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the Prime Video digital release.

It Lives Inside is a high school horror film that explores the challenges of cultural assimilation and the supernatural. Director Bishal Dutta drew inspiration from his own experiences as an Indian-American and incorporated elements of Indian folklore into the story. The movie strikes a balance between high school drama, cultural themes, and outright horror, providing a unique and refreshing viewing experience.
High school is tough enough for anybody, but when you throw in a complex story of immigration and cultural assimilation and mix in a murderous demonic entity derived from Indian folklore, that's when things really get wild. The new film, It Lives Inside, tackles this exact scenario. The feature directorial debut of Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside follows an Indian-American high school girl, Sam (Megan Suri), who has effectively abandoned her Indian heritage in favor of fitting in with the high school crowd. David Byrne met A24’s young fans as the Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is set to gross $800,673 from 264 Imax screens in North America this weekend. Its cumulative gross of $1.43 million includes Thursday screenings and a live event at TIFF for this remastered version of the 1984 Jonathan Demme-directed concert film ranked by critics as one of the best ever.
Nearly 60% of the audience was under 35 — not alive when the movie came out — and more than half said it was their first time seeing the film.
Stop Making Sense ran on a limited schedule with less than two shows on average at each location, and many screenings turning into dance parties. It expands nationwide next weekend to about 500 theaters and will play out like a regular release — an unusually long tail for a 40-year-old film. A footprint of theaters plans to keep playing it on weekends after its run.

Stop Making Sense, the remastered concert film that sowed delight at TIFF, opens on 300 Imax screens in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland. Locations Stateside number 260 ahead of a nationwide release next week.
The 1984 Talking Heads extravaganza from Jonathan Demme is presented in its new iteration by A24 — meaning the decades-old movie can now extend its reach to a new, younger audience that is A24’s core fan base. Opening numbers are hard to gauge since there aren’t many comps but there are parties, discos, stars and sellouts with film looking at about $1.5 million, including Thursday previews.
A 40th anniversary large-format special premiere screening at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month had people dancing in the aisles and broke Imax records. It Lives Inside weaves the immigrant experience and Hindu mythology into its horror narrative, but falls short in delivering real scares. The mother-daughter relationship in the film provides tension and depth, exploring the impact of the immigrant experience on different generations. Strong performances by Megan Suri and Mohana Krishnan elevate the film, but the story lacks depth and fails to fully explore its interesting themes.
Written and directed by Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside is more than a horror story — it weaves the immigrant experience into its tapestry while employing Hindu mythology to drive its central narrative. The horror itself is little more than slightly unsettling, but never outright scary or chilling. Rather, it’s the metaphor and character journey that truly carry this film. Dutta does a decent job exploring the lead character’s experience as an outsider, how her classmates “other” her, and the relationships that are damaged in a bid to assimilate.

Plot: An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness.
Review: One of the coolest trends going on in horror right now is the usage of cultural Boogeymen. Some of these have reached the pop culture zenith, while others remain simple horrors for small-knit communities. Indian culture has a ton of demons, many of which the average American would have never heard anything about. The creature presented in It Lives Inside is called Pishacha and is based on flesh-eating demons in different Hindu and Buddhist mythologies. The history of the creature feels so much more intriguing since it’s based on actual mythology, versus something a screenwriter concocted to scare us. All of this is to say that, while the story may follow many beats we’ve seen before,...

Few experiences unite people from all walks of life like a fear of the dark. Often surpassing specific concerns of serial killers, monsters, witches, or demons, what we collectively fear most is that mysterious, dark unknown. Anything and everything could be lurking in the shadows just waiting to pounce. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside follows an ancient evil that hides in dark corners while terrorizing its prey. The film follows a troubled teen named Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) terrorized by a flesh-eating demon known as the Pishacha that feasts on negative energy. This malevolent being soon sets its sights on her best friend Samidha (Megan Suri) and begins a campaign of terror hoping to gorge itself on chaos, destruction, and emotional pain.

What the fuck is in that jar?
That’s the first question that It Lives Inside throws at you, and the one that has Samida (Never Have I Ever‘s Megan Suri) wondering if it has something to do with the odd behavior of her classmate, Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). Once upon a time, these two first-generation Indian-Americans were the closest of friends. Then, as they got older, Samida started going by “Sam,” began distancing herself from her cultural identity, and chose to hang with a newer, “cooler” (read: Caucasian) crowd.

Megan Suri was permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through Neon's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
Megan Suri is a big horror fan, so when the chance to star in the new film "It Lives Inside" came, it felt preordained. "I grew up watching [the genre]," she tells Popsugar. She instantly connected with movies like "The Collector" and "Paranormal Activity."
"I'm just a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. And I love feeling fear," she admits. Horror movies, Suri says, can elicit emotions from an audience like no other: "That's what's exciting to me, especially when you go and watch it in a theater and you're surrounded by that universal energy."
In "It Lives Inside," Suri plays Sam, an Indian American high schooler who's running from her family's culture - and her former best friend Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). But Tamira is being tormented by a demonic spirit called a Pishach,...

The Pishach is a soul-feeding creature that represents evil and attaches itself to negative thoughts and energy. It aims to isolate and kill its victims. Samidha's possession by the Pishach affects her future as the creature might manipulate her thoughts and actions, potentially leading her down a dark path. The ending of "It Lives Inside" suggests the possibility of a sequel, as the Pishach is still alive and could seek revenge on Samidha for trapping it. The film also explores the immigrant experience.
It Lives Inside, the horror movie written and directed by Bishal Dutta, ends with Samidha (Never Have I Ever’s Megan Suri) having absorbed the Pishach, the malevolent creature feeding off of her Tamira. After Tamira is kidnapped by the Pishach, and Samidha watches a friend die in front of her, she finally caves and goes to her mother for help.

This review was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn't exist. When it comes to the best horror movies, specificity of vision is key. Getting right up in the guts of a distinctly terrifying force, be it grounded in history, identity, or trauma, is the way to give a familiar genre story something more. In writer-director Bishal Dutta’s feature debut It Lives Inside, this is something that feels like it is happening about halfway. The particular details of its characters and their lives are compelling while the rest of the story itself is quite lacking. In many ways, it is hard to even consider this a horror film when it often feels like more of a dramatic thriller. There are moments of terror near the beginning, but it gets far too...

From unpredictable acne and savage bullies to the particularly brutal pain of childhood friends growing apart, the high school halls can sometimes feel more like a minefield. Horror creators have explored this familiar subgenre for decades, from early classics like I Was a Teenage Werewolf to the slick and witty slasher boom of the 90s.
Bishal Dutta’s terrifying It Lives Inside continues this tradition by blending high school horror with demonic possession to explore the terrors of finding your place in an unforgiving world. It Lives Inside, the Midnight Audience Award winner from SXSW, expands to wide release September 22, hoping to stake a claim among the flurry of horror films released in fall. Director Bishal Dutta’s freshman outing delves deep into Hindu mythology in a thriller that finds an Indian American teen girl fending off an evil force while also having to reconnect to her cultural roots in India in the process.
That’s enough to send anybody to therapy. Whether protagonist Samidha / Sam (Megan Suri of Missing and Poker Face) survives is sure fun if not bone-chilling to watch. It Lives Inside stands out, mostly because it features diverse characters and a culture that general audiences don’t often experience. To that end, It Lives Inside is worth seeing for it's refreshingly unique pace and tone, and the way it serves up an evil force that’s downright creepy. Does it suffer from standard horror tropes?...

The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.
Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.
Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

A tripped out girl walks around school carrying an ominous jar. What’s inside of it is anybody’s guess, but inevitably we find out. And so begins the twisted fun in writer/director Bishal Dutta’s (Triads) dynamic new horror film, It Lives Inside. The producers of Get Out — Sean McKittrick and Raymond Mansfield — are attached to this SXSW audience winner, which will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The plot revolves around Sam (Megan Suri of Missing), an Indian-American teenager desperately trying to fit in at school. She’s also struggling with her cultural identity, and during a fight with her former gal pal, she unwittingly releases a mythological demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her deep loneliness. Suddenly, Sam must come to terms with her heritage and defeat the beast — or perish.

This Indian American monster movie has interesting touches of cultural specificity but it’s a mostly familiar formula
There’s a swirl of the old and the new in the hokey pre-Halloween horror It Lives Inside, a balance that could have benefited from a lot more of the latter – because when the first-time director Bishal Dutta does try to add freshness to the familiarity of formula, he manages to carve his film its own place within two overstuffed subgenres, flashes of intrigue as he veers between schlocky curse and even schlockier monster movie.
A wide-releasing horror film centered on an Indian American teenager already gives the film a certain distinction. Dutta, also acting as writer, tries to thread themes of assimilation and identity through a predictable procession of mostly ineffective jump scares and slightly more effective set pieces, the film working better when it’s trying to chill rather than shock.

“It lives inside,” says a very frightened Tamira (Mohana Kirshnan) as she shows the jar she’s been carrying around to Sam (Megan Suri). “There’s something in here, I know you can’t see it, but it lives inside…all the stories we heard growing up, they’re all true, Sam.” With this, It Lives Inside tosses us into a world of tales handed down through generations, stories of rituals performed without always thinking of their deeper meaning, in a world that doesn’t always value those stories and rituals, all rolled into the package of an American supernatural horror film directed by Bishal Dutta.
Tamira and Sam were best friends as children, but reaching adolescence and heading to high school sees them moving in different directions. Tamira still embraces her home culture. Sam is a South-Asian American teenager bristling against that home culture. She wants to be – and in fact is,...

Horror films are uniquely effective at giving tangible shape to our most abstract demons, and so it often feels somewhat perverse when a genre exercise chooses to subvert its own potential by creating a monster we can’t really see. Dull and disappointing as the actual results might be, Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside” at least has good reason to go with a creature who’s (mostly) shown through sounds and shadows: The ancient Dharmic flesh-eater Pishacha is formed by and feeds off the negative energy of its victims, and visibility itself is the greatest source of that negative energy among the Indian-American high school girls the creature is feasting on when the film begins.

One of the most frightening entities in all of Hindu and Buddhist folklore is a demonic being known as the Pishacha. Also called Piśāca, this sinister breed of flesh-eating creature has been compared to the Christian Devil and is believed to be the personification of pure evil. Pishachas are parasitic creatures who sow the seeds of chaos then feed on the resulting negative emotions. Bishal Dutta’s terrifying new film It Lives Inside brings this fearsome creature to life in a story that explores the horrors of adolescent cruelty as well as the dangers lurking around the edges of teenage angst.

Neon’s second trailer for It Lives Inside is incredibly creepy without being too spoiler-ish. Written and directed by Bishal Dutta, the PG-13 horror film is a unique twist on a demonic possession story.
“It Lives Inside emerged as an image: a kid on a bike, riding through Rockwellian suburbs. It’s right out of an early Amblin film. But what if this kid was escaping a puja, her school outfit wrapped in an ornate dupatta? For me, that image spoke to the duality I felt growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America. ‘Where do I belong? Which country is my home? Which world is ultimately mine?'” explained Dutta.
The cast includes Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh, Beatrice Kitsos, and Betty Gabriel.
Get Out‘s Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick served as producers. Edward H. Hamm Jr, Jameson Parker, Arielle Boisvert, and Shawn Williamson executive produce.
