Mickey Rourke, Mekhi Phifer and Udo Kier Join Indie Thriller ‘Mascots’ (Exclusive)
Image
Mickey Rourke, Mekhi Phifer and Udo Kier are teaming to lead “Mascots,” an independent thriller beginning production in Southern California in the fall.

Written and directed by Kerry Mondragon, the desert-set 1990s period piece follows two brothers (Oliver Hibbs Wyman and Blaine Kern III) who, with the help of some costumes, have escaped a lifetime of captivity under Rourke’s character.

Details on Phifer and Kier’s characters remain under wraps. Other actors attached include Felicia “Snoop” Pearson and Til Schweiger.

Calling the film “deeply personal” in a statement, Mondragon added that “Mascots” “reflects the ripple effects of toxic masculinity, mental illness and generational abuse that give birth to chosen identities and the raw, weird beauty of survival. I want to capture the dissonance of seeing the world for the first time through unfiltered eyes.”

Executive producers on “Mascots” include Kimberly Hines for Luminary Partners, Peter Gold of Gold Films for Castleland,...

‘Feeling Randy’ Review: A Sly and Sweet Teenage Comedy That Defies the Expectations of Its Genre
Image
The first word heard in “Feeling Randy” is “boner,” which, when taken together with the film’s title, promises a salacious and raunchy comedy. But writer-director Dean Lent’s debut feature (not counting the 1987 anthology film “Border Radio”) is sweeter and much more sublime than the usual teenage-boys-trying-to-lose-their-virginity romp. That may be its plot, but this semiautobiographical project is far from films like “Porky’s” or “American Pie.” Set in the Bay Area in the 1970s, “Feeling Randy” offers a humorous and sensitive portrayal of coming to terms with one’s sexuality.

Announcing its irreverent tone through sly chapter titles written in period-appropriate Recoleta font, and a droll voiceover from its eponymous lead (Reid Miller), “Feeling Randy” wastes no time establishing its premise and then keeps the narrative rhythm flowing. The setup is simple: Four teenage boys plan to lose their virginity by taking a road trip to a Nevada brothel.

But upon arrival, they quickly realize the locals don’t want them there. As the hostile environment escalates, our girls are disparaged by their aggressive neighbor, dismissed by the cops, and, it seems, even being stalked by some local men. But as her friends uncover Amber’s past trauma,...

Dreamcatcher (2003)
First Trailer for Underground Music Fest Horror Film 'Dreamcatcher'
Dreamcatcher (2003)
"All they wanted... was a killer night out." Oh what a tagline. Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Dreamcatcher, not to be confused with the other horror film also titled Dreamcatcher from 2003. This new horror film centers on two estranged sisters who, along with their friends, become entrenched in a 48 hour whirlwind of violence & chaos after a traumatic experience at an underground dance music festival. Sounds intense. The film's cast includes Niki Koss, Zachary Gordon, Travis Burns, Blaine Kern III, Olivia Sui, Emrhys Cooper, Elizabeth Posey, Nazanin Mandi, Adrienne Wilkinson, and Lou Ferrigno Jr. This looks absolutely ridiculous, a strange rip-off of Scream using the Phantom of the Paradise mask set at a rave. Even worse this film just doesn't fit in with the times. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jacob Johnston's Dreamcatcher, direct from YouTube: Dylan, known...

‘The Walking Dead’ Review: Negan Discovers His No. 1 Fan in the Jam-Packed ‘What It Always Is’
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Walking Dead” Season 10, Episode 5, “What It Always Is.”]

It’s tempting to praise “What It Always Is” simply because of how busy it gets. Most “Walking Dead” episodes move like molasses, but this week’s entry has no less than four significant plot threads going, which at least keeps the pace pulsing. Unfortunately, all but one of those threads have major problems, with its most significant entry — Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) gets a new acolyte — being particularly dire. The upside: Episode 5 sets the stage for more compelling developments next week, but it’s a hard road getting there. The cracks in this season are just getting wider.

Last week I noted that “The Walking Dead” is always more interesting when it explores its heroes’ fallibility, as paranoia about the Whisperers leads to unrest in both Hilltop and Alexandria. Of course, it’s not paranoia if they’re really out to get you,...

The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 5 Review: What It Always Is
Everyone wears a mask on The Walking Dead season 10. But what happens when those masks slip?

This The Walking Dead review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead Season 10 Episode 5

Mantras return throughout The Walking Dead. Characters all seem to have some sort of life lesson they wish to impart to others, or that they must tell themselves over and over again to keep on surviving. Alpha has her masks, and her willingness to take them of and put them on. Ezekiel has his, “And still I smile.” And of course, Negan has “We are Negan,” which is all well and good when you're in charge of a whole community of people but not as good when it's being parroted back to you by a demented, devoted fan boy who only wants to have your approval of his senselessly violent actions undertaken in your name.

Negan, when he was the leader of the Saviors,...

The Walking Dead Season 10 Photos Tease New Threats And Old Faces
The Walking Dead returns for its tenth season in just a couple of months and, to get us even more hyped for the show reaching such a major milestone, AMC has now released a bunch of images from the upcoming run.

There are a lot of things of note about these pics, too, which may tease a few storylines that’ll play out over season 10. For one, Daryl and Carol are seen on the former’s motorbike together – a hint that they could finally become an item this year? Then there’s Eugene with the radio, reminding us that a mysterious female voice was heard to reach out last season.

One photo also introduces newcomer Brandon (Blaine Kern III), who’s seen with a gardening Negan. In the comics, Brandon helps the former villain to escape and join with the Whisperers. This was a bad choice on his part, though,...

Happy Death Day 3 in Development at Blumhouse?
Christopher Landon at an event for Burning Palms (2010)
A few years back, Blumhouse and writer-director Christopher Landon proved that a PG-13 slasher movie could work with their teen-friendly masked killer movie Happy Death Day. In fact, that teen-slasher flick was so popular that it spawned a sequel earlier this year with the silly-titled follow-up Happy Death Day 2U. And today we're hearing that Blumhouse has begun developing a third (and final?) entry in the teen slasher series, Happy Death Day 3.

Truth be told, I'm not sure I'm excited for Happy Death Day 3. I mean don't get me wrong, I was all kinds of ready to check out Happy Death Day 2U when it hit earlier this year. But then that sequel was far too silly for my liking. In fact, I think it'd be hard to label the follow-up as a horror-comedy as it seemed like it was a straight-up comedy to this guy. Boring. Anyhow, I'd say...
