Japan’s top VTuber agency has doubled its profit year-over-year
Image
It’s been quite a year for Anycolor. In April, the Japanese company filed for an IPO, becoming the first VTuber agency to go public. Over the summer, two of the company’s most popular virtual characters — Kuzuha and Kanae — topped viewership charts on YouTube Gaming. Then, in October, Forbes reported that Anycolor founder Riku Tazumi had achieved a net worth of 1.1 billion.

The end of the year has brought mixed news for Anycolor, though the agency’s latest financial report provided cause for celebration. Despite an uneven performance on the stock market, Anycolor reported a quarterly net profit of 2.99 billion yen, which comes out to about 21.7 million. That profit margin is more than twice as high as the figure Anycolor reported in the equivalent quarter a year ago.

Anycolor’s quarterly revenue reached 11.9 billion yen (87.1 million), which is also a significant year-over-year jump. The firm’s 112 VTubers delivered more...

The founder of Japan’s top VTuber management company is reportedly worth 1.1 billion

If you live in the West, you may not have heard of Anycolor, but the Japanese company is a hot commodity on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Four months after going public, the VTuber management firm has grown so fast that co-founder Riku Tazumi now has a reported net worth of 1.1 billion.

According to Forbes, there are at least 40 living billionaires in Japan, but 26-year-old Tazumi is younger than all of them — and he’s the only billionaire in his specific field. Anycolor works with a roster of 140 partners, each of whom is associated with a specific virtual character. The biggest VTubers in the company’s stable are members of Nijisanji, a supergroup that has achieved global renown. Two Nijisanji standouts, Kanae and Kuzuha, recently cracked the list of the most-watched streams on YouTube Gaming.

With Nijisanji, Anycolor has successfully combined the spirited nature of idol culture with the logistical flexibility of non-human avatars.

VTubers like Kuzuha and Kanae are trending as male creators continue to dominate the streaming industry
Image
The latest swath of data from the streaming industry confirms a truth that many creators already knew: If you want to become a star on a platform like Twitch or YouTube Gaming, it helps to be male.

According to a new report from Stream Hatchet, 99 of the top 100 streamers are men. The only woman to crack that ranking was Kaitlyn Siragusa, who has attracted 5.7 million Twitch followers with the seductive streams on her Amouranth channel. Stream Hatchet's findings confirm opinions that have been expressed by streamers of all genders. Earlier this year, popular creator Mizkif suggested that women have an easier time breaking out on Twitch, but they eventually run into a "glass ceiling" that limits the growth of their channels.

The male-dominated nature of the streaming industry's upper echelon is only becoming more pronounced. The June 2022 State of the Stream report, published by StreamElements, reveals that men are breaking...
