Emmy Awards 2025 Predictions: Supporting Actress Limited Nominees, Front-Runners, and Who Will Win
Image
The Emmy Awards 2025 predictions for Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie are already heating up and this might be one of the most underrated bloodbaths of the season. With streamers packing their limited series with heavyweight ensembles, even the smallest supporting roles have become breakout moments.

From Adolescence to Sirens, and The Penguin to Dying for Sex, this year’s crop is stacked with scene-stealing powerhouses. The Supporting Actress race hasn’t always gotten the limelight it deserves, just ask the Ellen Burstyn controversy of ’06. But with rule changes now in place and the screen-time bar firmly set, the performances rising to the top in 2025 are the real deal.

Emmy Awards 2025 Predictions: What to Expect in the Supporting Actress Limited Category Race

With 105 submissions and only six slots up for grabs, this field is crowded, unpredictable, and more than a little ruthless. The thing that’s...

It Starts On The Page (Limited): Read ‘Black Mirror’ Episode 705 Script “Eulogy” With Foreword By Charlie Brooker
Image
Editor’s note: Deadline’s It Starts on the Page (Limited) features 10 standout limited or anthology series scripts in 2025 Emmy contention.

In Season 7 of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, the dystopian sci-fi anthology series for Netflix continues to evolve the increasingly real tech depicted, especially the growing applications and implications of AI from Hollywood to everyday life.

Written by Brooker and Ella Road and directed by Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor, the season’s fifth episode, “Eulogy”, stars Paul Giamatti as Phillip, a man contacted by a tech company called Eulogy, informing him of the death of his ex-girlfriend Carol and seeking to collect immersive photo memories.

With the help of The Guide (Patsy Ferran), Phillip is able to use technology to walk through his memories. As none of the photos are usable, with Carol’s image defaced in each, Phillip is left with only the painful memories of their...

‘Miss Austen’ Sequel ‘Miss Austen Returns’ In The Works For Masterpiece: Producer Christine Langan On The New Series & Bonnie Productions’ Next Chapter
Image
Exclusive: Keeley Hawes and key cast are on board Miss Austen Returns, a follow-up to Masterpiece period drama Miss Austen, and which is in the works from Bonnie Productions.

Miss Austen was adapted from Gill Hornby’s novel of the same name. Christine Langan, whose Bonnie Productions made the series, tells Deadline that Hornby’s recently published follow-up, ‘The Elopement’, forms the spine of a new series Bonnie is working up with the title Miss Austen Returns.

Miss Austen writer Andrea Gibb is currently penning scripts. As with the earlier series, the show is expected to be a co-production with Masterpiece in association with Federation Stories and the BBC, which showed the first series in the UK.

With the new drama, plus Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Berlin Film Festival competition title Hot Milk and Miss Austen already under its belt, Bonnie has worked up notable credits in film and TV. It was founded in 2020 by Langan,...

One Of Black Mirror Season 7's Most-Visually Stunning Moments Didn't Use CGI
Image
In a world where technology, and especially AI, is rapidly taking over these days, it's always a pleasure to see when some grand visual achievement in a film or TV show is done by people (and practical effects) rather than CGI. And who would've thought the series that's primarily about sci-fi and future technology could pull off a stunt like that in its seventh season with aplomb? The "Black Mirror" episode 'Eulogy' is likely the most heartfelt, endearing, and human story in the latest batch of six episodes. It's practically a one-man show that leans heavily on Paul Giamatti's captivating charisma and emotional range to tell a ballad of love, grief, and regret.

Giamatti plays Phillip, a middle-aged American man who's notified by a tech company called Eulogy that a long-lost love of his, Carol (Hazel Monaghan), has recently passed away. Though their relationship ended decades ago,...

‘Maybe Happy Ending’ dominates the 2025 Drama Desk Awards with 6 wins, ‘Boop!’ and ‘Gypsy’ stage upsets
Image
Winners of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards were announced at a ceremony on June 1, hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess. These awards are unique in that Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete together in the same categories.

Maybe Happy Ending was a clear favorite with Drama Desk voters, claiming six awards to become the winningest production of the ceremony. The show’s victories include the coveted Outstanding Musical prize and Outstanding Director for Michael Arden. Writers Will Aronson and Hue Park pulled off a clean sweep with wins for Music, Lyrics, and Book of a Musical.

The Drama Desks employ combined gender acting categories, with an expanded number of nominees. As such, they’ve decided to present two winners by default in each acting race. Tony Award frontrunner Sarah Snook claimed Lead Performance in a Play for The Picture of Dorian Gray, alongside fellow Tony nominee Laura Donnelly for The Hill of California.

Paul Giamatti talks ‘Black Mirror,’ playing a ‘Star Trek’ villain, and his go-to In-n-Out order
Image
In his Black Mirror debut, Emmy-winning actor Paul Giamatti stars as a lonely man who confronts a past love by literally stepping into old photographs to recall his late girlfriend’s face.

The Season 7 episode “Eulogy” calls on Giamatti to convey a wide range of emotions — often all at once — whether that’s anger, hurt, or self-loathing. How does an award-winning actor prepare for that?

“I'm filled with defensiveness, anger and hurt,” Giamatti joked to Gold Derby on the red carpet of the show’s FYC event at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in North Hollywood, Calif. “It's weirdly enjoyable in some really sick way for actors to do that.”

While he said he “worried” most about the ending and the final scene “landing naturally,” The Holdovers actor also credited the episode’s writers, Ella Road and creator Charlie Brooker.

“It’s in the script when someone tells me what to do,...

‘Miss Austen’ Finale: Keeley Hawes Teases Surprisingly ‘Gentle’ Conclusion to Cassy-Mary Rivalry
Image
Miss Austen comes to a close in a two-part finale airing back-to-back this Sunday, May 18, on PBS. The Masterpiece adaptation of the novel of the same name tells the story of what led Cassandra Austen to burn the letters of her sister, beloved author Jane Austen — an act that has left Cassy often painted as a villain in history books. But the true “soulmate” relationship between these two sisters, as star Keeley Hawes describes it to TV Insider, is at the root of everything in this tale, and Hawes says the central conflict of the show’s present-day timeline is going to reach a surprisingly “gentle” conclusion. Set many years after the death of Jane, Miss Austen shows Hawes as Cassandra, a woman who never married out of a commitment to her fiancé who tragically died before they could wed and to her sister, the closest relationship of her life.

‘I didn’t think he was a jerk’: Paul Giamatti on finding the humanity in his standout ‘Black Mirror’ episode
Image
The only formula for Black Mirror is that there isn’t one. “Eulogy,” the fifth episode of the current season, is essentially an hour-long solo performance by Paul Giamatti. Though he does have a costar in Patsy Ferran, he holds the screen himself for nearly the full hour, acting opposite an avatar (spoiler alert!) as a middle-aged man named Phillip coming to terms to terms with long-buried memories of a lost love.

What’s first presented as a simple ask to collect memories soon reveals itself to be a far deeper, more emotional journey, led by Ferran’s “The Guide” through — and into — old photographs. And it takes an actor of Giamatti’s caliber — with accolades from the Oscars, the Emmys, the Globes, BAFTAs, SAGs, and more — to keep us riveted.

Here, Giamatti tells Gold Derby why he empathizes with Phillip, why he likes playing bad guys, and why he...

Charlie Kaufman
Charlie Kaufman’s Later The War | Production shuts down
Charlie Kaufman
Charlie Kaufman’s new film, Later The War, has stopped filming, it’s being reported, and crew are moving on. More here.

It’s been five years since Charlie Kaufman last directed a film, that being I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, a wildly surreal movie very much in the Charlie Kaufman tradition. That project took Netflix money to get made – the kind of money which is being offered far less liberally from the company in the period since Dan Lin took over stewardship of its film division.

Happily, back in February, it looked like our long wait to see another feature from Kaufman was almost over. WIth a promising ensemble of Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson and Patsy Ferran in place, production was confirmed and we even got a nugget of plot to gnaw on. The original short story which the film will be based on is called Debby’s Dream...

How ‘Miss Austen’ Draws Fine Art from an Act of Real-Life Cultural Vandalism
Image
Beating Netflix’s (entirely unnecessary) remake of “Pride and Prejudice,” the BBC’s spinoff “The Other Bennet Sister” and French rom-com “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the proverbial punch, the 250th birthday celebrations of arguably Britain’s most cherished novelist begins with a four-part drama focusing on her elder sister.

For many literary scholars, Cassandra Austen is a villainess of Miss Norris-esque proportions. After all, her deliberate burning of her sibling’s vast personal correspondence — only 160 of her approximately 3,000 letters are still intact — largely thwarted any attempt to further understand the famously elusive author. However, “Miss Austen,” itself based on Gill Hornby’s same-named piece of historical fiction, does its best to exonerate her reputation as a cultural vandal.

The BBC original certainly comes with an impressive period drama pedigree. Director Aisling Walsh won a BAFTA for her post-war miniseries “Room at the Top,” while leading lady Keeley Hawes...

‘Black Mirror’ Sets Emmy Campaigns for Paul Giamatti, Rashida Jones, Cristin Milioti and More (Exclusive)
Image
Netflix has a strong Emmy hand to play this TV awards season, positioning the seventh season of its flagship anthology series “Black Mirror” for a major awards run — and this time, the dystopian drama might be among its most formidable contenders yet.

Confirmed exclusively to Variety, the streamer is submitting three standout performances for lead acting honors in the limited or anthology series or TV movie categories: Paul Giamatti for the melancholic and moving “Eulogy,” and Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones for their resonant turns in the sociopolitical two-hander “Common People.” It’s a bold push that signals high hopes for a season already being hailed as a return to form — and possibly the series’ strongest outing since its Emmy-winning heyday.

Giamatti’s performance as Phillip, a solitary man navigating grief through digital means in “Eulogy,” has generated both tears and buzz. The 46-minute episode explores the ethics of AI-driven memorials,...

‘Boop! The Musical’ leads 2025 Drama Desk Awards nominations; off-Broadway dominates play categories
Image
Nominations for the 69th annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Wednesday by Tony- and Grammy-nominated actor Norm Lewis. Winners will be announced on June 1, at a ceremony taking place at NYU Skirball and hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess.

The Drama Desk Awards are unique in the landscape of New York theater, as they are the only place where Broadway, off-Broadway, and off-off Broadway compete within the same categories. The nominating committee of the 2025 Drama Desk Awards comprises Chair Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Daniel Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Raven Snook, and Charles Wright.

The Broadway transfers of Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, English, Job, and Oh, Mary! were not eligible for these kudos, having already competed for their off-Broadway runs.

Boop! The Musical clearly captured the hearts of the nominators. The infectiously upbeat tuner is the most nominated production, with 11 nominations. Nipping at its heels is...

How Paul Giamatti's Heartbreaking Black Mirror Episode Connects To Season 1's Darkest Story
Image
This post contains spoilers for the "Black Mirror" episodes "Eulogy" and "The Entire History of You."

"Black Mirror" fans often worry that the show has run out of genuine surprises or meaningful things to say. There's a familiar formula now to how a typical "Black Mirror" episode should go down: a seemingly sympathetic character is introduced to sci-fi technology, the tech turns out be eviler than first assumed, and the main character is revealed to be more complicit in this evil than we would've guessed. For the character to be a pure innocent victim of the technology isn't enough; the horror doesn't land unless the victim at least partially brings it upon themself.

On the surface at least, "Eulogy" checks off all of those boxes. Paul Giamatti's character Phillip is introduced as a lonely, heartbroken man, who's asked to use a sentient picture-enhancing computer to revisit key moments from a relationship in his twenties.

The ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first
Image
Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

As for the other new episodes,...

Paul Giamatti Says ‘Eulogy’ Is Closest Thing to a ‘Happy Ending’ for ‘Black Mirror’: ‘He Ends Up Better’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Black Mirror” Season 7, Episode 5, “Eulogy.”

While there are rarely happy endings in “Black Mirror,” Paul Giamatti said his Season 7 episode, “Eulogy” is as close to one as the sci-fi series gets.

“It really is as far as it could be a happy ending,” Giamatti told TheWrap. “I don’t know if it’s happy, but I think he ends up better — it’s a better ending than it could have been.”

In “Eulogy,” Giamatti stars as Phillip, a lonely man who is offered the chance to revisit a heartbreaking and pivotal relationship from his 20s by using a system that enables users to step into memories from photographs. With the help of the system’s guide (played by Patsy Ferran), Phillip examines the few preserved photos he had left of his ex-girlfriend, Carol, following her death, tapping into what Giamatti calls a “weird, almost...

Why ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Might Be Its Best Shot at Emmy Gold
Image
Could this be the year “Black Mirror” finally reflects gold?

After more than a decade of mind-bending morality tales and dystopian nightmares, Netflix’s “Black Mirror” might finally be on the verge of achieving a long-elusive milestone: an Emmy nomination for outstanding limited or anthology series.

While the anthology has long been critically lauded — and an Emmy magnet when it was eligible in the television movie category — the Television Academy’s 2021 rule change, which moved anthologies alongside miniseries, has made it harder for shows like “Black Mirror” to compete on equal footing. However, the seventh season, which dropped April 10, is drawing some of its most substantial critical acclaim. And with a submission landscape thinner than usual, this might be creator Charlie Brooker’s best shot yet at one of the top prizes.

First launched in 2011 by Brooker, “Black Mirror” has taken its cues from classics like “The Twilight Zone,” with...

Black Mirror series 7 episode 5: Eulogy review
Paul Giamatti
Paul Giamatti looks back on life filled with regret in a thoughtful inspection of love and memory. Here’s our Black Mirror: Eulogy review.

In the world of Black Mirror, when a “kit” arrives at your front door via drone, it’s rarely a good sign. In Philip (Paul Giamatti)’s case, it might be just what he needs.

The package comes from an organisation called Eulogy, a funeral company which transforms memories of the deceased into “immersive experiences”. Philip’s old girlfriend, Carol, has passed away, and his name was in her contacts list. Along with his digital guide (Patsy Ferran), the pair are able to delve into the polaroid photographs long-buried in a shoebox in the attic – memories the still heartbroken Philip would rather forget…

Playing out as a character-driven two-hander, Eulogy escapes the sci-fi thriller trappings weighing down some of the season’s previous episodes to deliver a far gentler,...

Black Mirror (Season 7) Episode 5 “Eulogy” Recap, Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: What Memory of Carol did Philip Choose to Eulogize?
Charlie Brooker
Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror has often been critiqued for losing the sharp edge that once defined its bleak, cautionary storytelling. The series, known for its grim take on technological advancement, built its reputation on a pessimistic view of how innovation might spiral out of control. However, some argue that Black Mirror, much like its spiritual predecessor The Twilight Zone, occasionally finds room for hope amidst the darkness.

Still, there’s a growing gap between how fast technology integrates into everyday life and how quickly stories reflecting that evolution are created. As a result, media that not only portrays the dangers of technology but also explores its emotional or even optimistic possibilities is becoming more relevant—and more necessary. Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 5, titled “Eulogy,” falls into that emerging category. Rather than leaning into pure dystopia, it uses technology as a narrative tool to tell a story that’s both emotionally resonant and thoughtfully restrained.

Paul Giamatti and Charlie Brooker Explore Grief and the Future of AI in Haunting ‘Black Mirror’ Episode
Image
In “Eulogy,” one of the final episodes of Season Seven of Black Mirror, a lonely man named Phillip (Paul Giamatti) learns that an old flame has died, and he’s been asked to contribute to a unique kind of eulogy wherein an AI guide (Patsy Ferran) pulls his consciousness into old photos to mine memories. Phillip claims not to remember much about the woman, but, over the course of the episode, his blurry memories sharpen, and he admits to himself that he never stopped loving her — that his own hubris kept them apart.

Black Mirror Season 7 TV Review: The anthology is back with a sequel and unique original tales
Image
Plot: Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series will return in 2025 with six brand new episodes, including a sequel to the sci-fi adventure USS Callister.

Review: Since Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror moved from the UK’s Channel 4 to Netflix in 2016, we have been lucky to get four seasons and the interactive movie Bandersnatch. The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

Black Mirror: Eulogy Review — Paul Giamatti Shines in a Familiar but Emotional Story
Image
Although the Black Mirror franchise is primarily known for a darker, more horror or thriller-leaning tone, some of the best episodes are more romantic in nature — Hang the DJ and San Junipero coming to mind as key examples. The season seven episode Eulogy attempts to cash in on a similar tone, and while it’s not as memorable as those aforementioned entries, it will catch a lot of viewers tearing up.

Black Mirror: Eulogy Review

Eulogy tells the story of a man who receives the news of the passing of a former lover, which causes him to use a revolutionary new software that allows him to step into old photographs and relive his memories. What proceeds is a decades-spanning romance condensed into the length of a 45-minute Black Mirror episode — all thanks to the convenience of a clever premise and narrative device.

The sentimental story, penned by series creator Charlie Brooker and screenwriter and playwright Ella Road (Doctor Who, Ten Percent), centers on Phillip (Paul Giamatti), who’s pretty closed-off and isolated. He receives a call from a representative on behalf of a woman named Kelly Royce (Patsy Ferran), informing him that Kelly’s mother, Carol, his ex-girlfriend, has died, and that her family would like his help with the memorial.

Phillip accepts a package from the representative containing Eulogy, tech that allows users to enter old photographs to curate a eulogy for someone who has died. While the program can process up to 1,500 photos and recommends a minimum of six images, Phillip grabs just three Polaroids from a shoebox containing stacks of photos hidden away in his...

Black Mirror season 7 release date, time, what to expect
Image
Charlie Brooker was on to something when he created Black Mirror, a British anthology series that explores the dark side of technology and its impact on modern society. While initially a Channel 4 series, the show gained international recognition after Netflix picked it up, allowing Brooker to expand his vision even further. Six seasons have been released so far, with a highly anticipated seventh season set to be released on the streaming platform soon. We're talking about a batch of new episodes available to stream tomorrow!

Unlike the previous season, which had five episodes, Black Mirror season 7 will feature one additional episode, bringing the total to six episodes. This marks the first time since the fourth season that the show has featured this many episodes. Brooker has referred to this installment as having a touch of "Og Black Mirror." Vicky Krieps and Emma Mackey in Hot Milk (2025)
Hot Milk (2025) Movie Review: A Tepid Romance Redeemed by a Scalding Mother-Daughter Dynamic
Vicky Krieps and Emma Mackey in Hot Milk (2025)
“Hot Milk” (2025) marks the directorial debut of screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the scribe behind the Keira Knightley-starring biopic “Colette,” the Weinstein-based drama “She Said,” and the sizzling tale of forbidden romance featuring Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz, “Disobedience.” Her first feature presents an uneven outing that falters over the rocks of its central romance but pulls itself together when it turns to the topic of generational trauma.

Emma Mackey stars as Sofia, an anthropology post-grad accompanying her mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw) to Spain, where she is set to receive experimental medical treatment. Since Sofia was four, Rose has been largely unable to walk, save for occasional bursts of ambulation, thanks to a condition that traditional medicine cannot diagnose.

While stuck with her mother amid the sweltering Spanish heat, Sofia does what every young Brit abroad must do and begins a summer fling with Ingrid (Vicky Krieps), who quite literally rides...
